A couple of nights ago I drank about 8 pints of Guiness and I saw a little Jesus.
Well, yeah, but each one took about a week.

Who wants try subbing in a little Buddha or Vishnu?
To me, the most WTF thing in this thread is not the plastic Jesus, but that a water company would have a drive-through payment window.
Today I learned that the song was not original to the film Cool Hand Luke. Blake’s cover version sent me down a bit of a rabbit hole. But yeah, you beat me to posting the song ![]()
…
@kferr , drive-through utility payments were a thing locally (suburban New Orleans) until 2020 or so. There were even parish-run drive-throughs – the one closest to us looked like a converted bank + drive-through lanes – where you could pay several different utilities at one stop.
When I lived in Mississippi, there weren’t drive-through places like that but there were walk-up windows in many grocery stores and pharmacies where you could pay several different utilities. And I don’t mean in the Pleistoscene Era – definitely while the Internet was a fully-functional thing.
Anf of course, mailing in a check is still possible today as it was then. But I’d bet in 2026, maybe one in a thousand customers still pay by mail regularly
Small town utility companies have had drive through windows at their office and also ways to pay in person at a the small town bank or a the small town grocery store since forever.
If they haven’t moved offices in 40 years, it’s not surprising the window is still there. Small town operators don’t generally invest in the latest automation and so no, there isn’t an app for that. And small town folks are the canonical late/never adopters of new tech once it does become available.
You can see the roof of the drive-through extending over the driveway right here on Google Maps. Zoom out to see the (relative) isolation on the place. (Though still too crowed for my ideal.)
I grew up in small towns in Iowa and don’t remember places like that. But then again, I was a kid and not the one paying the bills. I always lived in cities after university and paid bills by mail.
Glad to hear it!
I have another earworm, Bob Dylan’s “It’s Alright Ma, I’m Only Bleeding” from 1965:
Disillusioned words like bullets bark
As human gods aim for their mark
Make everything from toy guns that spark
To flesh-colored Christs that glow in the dark
It’s easy to see without looking too far
That not much is really sacred
I stick googlie eyes everywhere.
I know I know, I am defacing public property or some crap.
But I think if I stick googlie eyes over the message “for a good time call 867-5309” I feel like Jenny would appreciate it.
I’ve been known to stick tiny smile faces
upside down as well. But I think that’s kinda passe nowadays.
I feel kinda criminal. But I ain’t doing no tiny jesus’. That’s pisses me off about as much as “have a blessed day” does. It just goes allover me when I hear that.
I’m not sure I can prove it but I believe Walmart has told checkers not to say it anymore. I really really hate that term. It’s passive aggressive and supposes I believe like you.
Our niece has a Jeep pickup with the dash covered in this crap. I really don’t think I’d want all that stuff flying around if I hit another vehicle or a deer.
Sticky dots..just saying.
But I like the dash clear too. A piece of paper up there bugs me.
