Have you voted yet?

I’m not coughing any more. I really think it’s just from allergic post nasal drip overnight. But I would have to admit to the symptom if asked, regardless of what I think it is.

If I have any more coughing today, or wake up with it again tomorrow, I’ll contact my doctor.

That’s the worst when you know it’s not COVID and when you cough in public and everyone stares at you in horror.

Voted on Tuesday. Funny story.

Dropped off ballot at LA Valley College. They have early voting, too. Around 75-80 people in line.

I walk to the ballot drop-off box, which is really the exit to the voting booths. Gave ballot to girl, she files it away in the box.

I go and walk past the line on the way out. A guy asks me if you need to wait in line to drop off a ballot. I said, “No, you just go in there.” He says, “Oh, what am I waiting here for?” So the guy B-lines to the ballot box door. Upon overhearing our conversation, about 15-20 other people with ballots all head to the right door, murmuring and muttering.

Voted in person yesterday (which was Halloween). I would have loved to vote by mail, but I live in Indiana, where “I don’t want to catch the deadly disease that is ravaging the country” is NOT a valid reason to receive a mail-in ballot.

Took just under three hours. Two hours and forty minutes just to get into the building, about an hour and ten minutes once you got inside. Pretty much everyone was wearing masks. Ran into a couple of friends that I haven’t been able to get together with since March. And, it being Halloween, I saw the Red Power Ranger standing in line to vote as well!

traffic? a line of voters? something else?

I dropped my ballot off at the library and it was recorded as accepted. I don’t think I’ve ever filled in a little oval with more relish. I used a sharpie to add some irony.

Really. That doesn’t sound right.

My wife and I are filling out our ballots today. We’ll drop them off early Tuesday morning. Hopefully there’s no traffic or long lines.

I stood in line outdoors at my early voting place for about 40 minutes last Thursday = 10 days ago. I arrived at 2:30pm on a day they were running from 7am to 7pm, so a relatively off-peak time. Once inside the rather small facility there was no waiting. I stepped right up to a registrar to sign for my ballot, then to a voting booth, then to a ballot scanner / lockbox, then right back out the door.

Long-ish waits are almost certainly going to be part of the process for lots of people in lots of jurisdictions.

Uggh. Great.

Lines. It was one of the last available days for early voting, and it was a weekend, and early voting for the entire county only happens at one location, the County building downtown. I did not find it terribly surprising for the line to be that long.

Yikes!

I received a ballot in the mail, filled it out, sealed it in the privacy envelope, signed the envelope, and then drove 2 miles town hall, where I shoved it into the drive-through drop box. There was no one in front of me when I got there, although I think a saw someone pulling out as I entered the driveway to town hall.

Then, on the next business day, I checked the state’s website and saw that my ballot had been accepted.

The differences between states and locations astonishes me. And I find the stories of lines depressing.

Although, looking back at my earlier post, I realize that I mis-typed. It was only one hour and forty minutes to get into the building, and then an hour and ten minutes once I was inside. So just short of three hours altogether.

Sorry for the confusion.

Edited to add: The woman just in front of me in line had an absentee ballot, which she was delivering by hand. She waited in the same line I did, for the same amount of time. I don’t know if there was a way she could have skipped that line, but in the event, she did not.

My wife and I put our absentee ballots in the drop box over a week ago.

I’m not sure that fits into any poll category, because we were emphatically NOT voting by mail, given the state of things.

I find it depressing that some people may not be able to wait, or may not have the patience, but from news accounts of early turn-out, I feel pretty good that so many people are going out there to be sure their votes are in, and (hopefully) will be counted.

I also find it depressing that the people who could make it easier and safer didn’t do so, for partisan reasons. But, again, it’s heartening to see people refusing to let their votes be suppressed.

The only thing I find comforting about people having long lines while voting at the last minute is that (WHEN LEGALLY POSSIBLE) Democrats took advantage of mail-in and early voting in large numbers, as there was no political shame in doing so, while a true Trumpster would do no such thing. If Trumpers have a hard time voting on election day, I find I can bear the thoughts of them stuck in line or giving up early with the smallest of tears.

Sadly, I know a lot of working class members of the Democratic Party are stuck in areas with benighted voting policies, or their employers only offer time off options for election day itself. There are plenty of good people having a hard time voting. So as I said, smallest of consolations above.

I am encouraged by the turnouts so far. Many more people are voting than before, based on the states that reported that the early ballots received already equaled or exceeded the last presidential election.

I am not expecting lines tomorrow morning, but there may be. But my ballot will be filled in, signed and sealed and I can bypass the lines to drop it in the box. I’ll go to my local polling place and put it in the box there, and not just a standalone drop box.

Yeah, I wasn’t sure which one to pick either. I went with “mail”, but like you just used a drop box.

Finally got it done today at an outside setup. There were maybe 15-20 people standing in line to vote early the old fashioned way and two people ahead of me at the drop box. This was pretty soon after that polling station opened at 11 a.m… I thought it was fairly encouraging, as this early polling site has been open for a couple of weeks now.

Of course the SF Bay Area is not really in doubt candidate-wise (at pretty much any level). As usual the biggest open questions are going to be how the state and local propositions fare.

Turned mine in today. There was line for in person voting at the township office and a short line in the ballot drop box.

Until tomorrow, all voting around me at been at city halls or community centers. Yesterday, the line in a nearby city was around the massive building, down the parking lot, and into a nearby park. One guy said he got in line a little after noon (thought since the Vikings were playing the Packers it would be pretty dead). He finally got back into his car at 330.

He also said there were a few rabble rousers, which he laughed at. Old white guys trying to intimidate younger black voters. It didn’t work out so well.

Tomorrow, my tiny elderly mother will be voting in person (“As it’s supposed to be done!”). I offered to be her body guard / keep her company. This woman, who considers ‘rinkydink’ a cuss word, declined my offer, stating “Those fuckers better not try it”.

Yay MissTake’s mom!!

Please tell me she’s taking her cane with her!

With her snow-pick on the end of it.

“To keep from slipping, officer.”
