Lately I’ve been having trouble submitting threads, and have sometimes cancelled or not posted because of this problem (don’t I sound like this is some sort of counselling intro - Hi! My name is mnemosyne and I have a problem…).
Anyways, the “thank-you for posting” page never shows up - the browser just keeps running as though it was searching for the page, but never ever gets there (I just had supper, and my last post STILL hadn’t gone through when I came back). When I cancel and return to the thread, and refresh, however, my post sometimes does and sometimes doesn’t show up (depending on how quickly I lose my patience).
I’m using Debian Linux with Gnome, and my browser is Mozilla 0.9.4, but it’s the same one that I’ve been using for the past little while, and previous versions never had this problem. The browser itself doesn’t actually crash, and neither does my net connection, so I’m wondering if this has anything to do with the boards? I’ve had this problem for about a week now. I’ve tried Netscape 4.77 for Linux and it still doesn’t work. My internet doesn’t function in Windows at the moment, so I can’t test that, but I can say that my SO’s Linux box gives me the same problem.
So, to summarize, is there a reason on your end as to why my posts don’t appear to go through?
Don’t everybody trip all over yourselves trying to help mnemosyne out.
Seriously, I would guess it’s just the same old traffic/speed issues that have been around forever on the SDMB. Happens to me sometimes, though sadly almost never when I wish it would, like when I see a typo right after I hit “Submit Reply.”
I usually attribute any unpredictable weirdness here to traffic/speed.
I suppose that’s it. It just seems to happen a lot - I’d say more than 50% of the time - maybe 70 or more. And I don’t remember having this problem quite so much before the amazing miracle fix that Jerry did a while back.
I have had the same problem. What I do is hit stop, open another window, go to the board, and check and see if the post went. Most of the time it had. This stops you from double posting. Of course if it hasn’t gone, try it again.
Of course, one needs to be bright enough to realize that if one’s stupid browser brings up a cached version of the thread list and/or the thread itself, one may not realize that one’s thread has indeed gone through.
