My son is 5, and just peed standing up for the first time. He has been potty trained for a few years, but prefers to sit for both jobs.
I thought it would serve him well to learn to pee standing up, and hubby and I have been trying to get him to do it for a long time. But he has always resisted. Also, he really hates to touch his penis. Boy will that change in a few years!
He is in preschool 2 days a week now, and as far as I know is the only boy not using a urinal. No biggie really, but just something that might make his life easier right? Heck what do I know. I don’t have a penis. I am just guessing.
So, today he came and told me that he tried it, and I didn’t believe him at first. Just knowing what an aversion he has to touching his penis(even at bath time), I found it odd that he would do it all of a sudden. Then the hubby put him to bed and said he saw him do it! Yay. I am so proud.
BTW, I guess he didn’t actually have to touch it. Who knew you guys could pee and aim without actually touching it!? I know now.
Yes, it’s possible, but more difficult and less controllable. If you produce a particularly strong stream Newton’s 3rd Law comes into play and things can become messy.
I’m still on a high from my 4-year-old son’s decision to forgo the diaper/pullup and POOP on the potty. Saints be praised, I’ll never change a poopy again til I’m a grandmother (and my daughter assures me that will be a VERY LONG TIME).
I’m still waiting. My 4 year old goes to see a behavioral therapist on Friday. It’s not so much that he won’t poop in the potty (although I hate having to clean him up after he uses the pull up; he’s 4 1/2!)–it’s the fact that he holds it in until he’s running around the house screaming in pain. The gastro tells us that it’s not physical and highly recommended the therapist who has a 1 to 2 session success rate.
Is is really weird that I felt the same sense of joy when my boy dog Boris lifted his leg to pee for the first time? Brings a tear to my eye just remembering it. I was so proud!
That is actually good to know. I guess it wasn’t so much him using the urinal, it was the standing up part. I know that isn’t necessary either, since women get by in life without doing it. But I think it would make life a little easier for him.
My main problem with my son has actually been an odd one, and one that most parents would probably be happy to have. I have heard a lot of mother complain about their boys peeing just about anywhere!
My son won’t pee anywhere but on a toilet, sitting down. We camp a lot, and fish, and hang out at my parents farm for hours and hours, and have had to run find him a toilet, because he just couldn’t, or wouldn’t pee standing up. Not even behind a tree, out in acres of woods! He would cry and cry, and just hold it.
When my brothers were little they marked every tree on our 200 acre farm! My mother actually had the opposite problem, trying to get them to stop doing that. She even caught my little brother peeing on main street in town, while we waited in a car for her once. He was 3.
So now…I hope Orion will be able to pee in out of the way places if need be. Like in a pit toilet, or port-a-potty. Sitting in those isn’t always easy for a little bottom.
And sure, by the ocassional tree. I am not enouraging him to go around peeing everywhere, but sometimes it has to be done. I have done it plenty of times myself.
