Another way to go would be to assign equivalence values to defensive stands. Consider what a “great”, “good” and “decent” day for a QB or RB would score. (Roughly, 20+, 16, and 10 points respectively.) Then use the bucketing percentages to try and map “great”, “good” and “decent” defensive stands. Doing that, I end up with:
Weirddave and Spiritus Mundi. I sent them both a reminder email earlier today.
Doing a search on their activity, Dave is still actively posting, so I have no worries about him signing up. Mundi, OTOH, has only posted maybe twice since the last He Hate Me thread, and the most recent one was back in January. That does not bode well. He really digs this league, so I’d hate to see him miss out.
I’m all for either quarterbacking one of the dormant teams until the person shows up or outright taking over. Of course, whatever’s necessary at the time, of course.
If you wish some of my input for defensive scoring, I like **Ellis Dee’s ** and it looks a lot like mine did when I ran a league. I also changed kickers. Missing an extra point lost you ten points (if I remember right), missing a 1-20 yarder lost you 5 points, and it went down as the ranges went back. I don’t know what ranges you guys are using, though. Consequently, I marginally increased the kicking values as well, to even it out.
I also gave defenses extra love for a safety. I always wondered if that was more a product of the defense, the inability of the opposing offense, or the special teams.
After three weeks, two emails, a private message, and bumping last year’s thread to fire off thread notifications, I still haven’t heard a peep from either Weirddave or Spiritus Mundi.
The trading period opens on Sunday. If they haven’t shown up by Monday, I’m tempted to give away their spots. I don’t want to do this, but it feels like they aren’t that interested.
Any thoughts?
ETA: I notice that we didn’t have a full complement of 14 owners for last year’s league until late July. So I’m extending the signup period and delaying the trading period by up to one month. Thus, offseason trading doesn’t open until August 1st, or whenever everyone joins; whichever comes first.
But Mundi’s the fucking man! He talks shit in Shakespearean!
I can’t help but feel like there’s no way neither of those guys want to be in the league, you know? But obviously there’s got to be a break point, and a thread, two emails and a private message is, I suppose, about all we can do. I just don’t like the idea of making the break point in June/July.
I opened both last year’s and this year’s league & thread at the same time: the first day yahoo leagues opened. Looking back at last year’s SDMB thread, however, Mundi didn’t make his first appearance until late July, and (IIRC) neuroman didn’t show up (or even join the yahoo league) until a few days after that.
For some reason I thought we had gotten started with trading in late June/early July, but I think I was just remembering my own personal planning of various trade proposals during that time.
As a general guidline, the yahoo league should continue opening as early as possible, but the entire months of June and July should be the grace period to sign up, leaving us the first three weeks of August for trading. I’d prefer a full month, but three weeks is sufficient.
The first priority is getting everybody back who wants to come back, and I think those guys are still interested.
I agree with pushing back the deadline until August/as late as possible. That’s plenty of time to get new, responsible owners should Mundi and Weirddave not show up. And I’m glad to see that RNATB and Least Original are interested.
I think I showed up late last year because I was barely reading SDMB at all, but as football season approached I thought of this league. (In fact, this fantasy league is the single biggest reason I have renewed my subscription to the SDMB in the last couple of years.)
Incidentally, you may not see me very active in the coming months for rules discussions, etc, although I will try to stay posted. I am in graduate school, and will be studying abroad.
I am here - my email has changed since last yar, and as others have noted I rarely particpate on this board anymore, so I did not receive any of Ellis’ notes until tonight (I suppose I have Scooter Libby to thank for it). I will be signing up in the yahoo league ASAP, and updating my email address there.
Last year was a sad descent into mediocrity for the Mundi’s (though I did win my cash league again, and a side bet with Omni that he still hasn’t made good.) This year I predict a proud return to . . . um, what were my keepers again? . . . Oh.
Now that I’m looking at this (I don’t usually turn my attention to FF until training camp opens, which is why I hadn’t registered yet), are the slots for the listed eligible keepers the round that they will cost us a pick in this year, or the round that they were picked in last year? So if I were to keep, say, Bulger, would that cost me a 5th round pick this year, or a third?
Remember that if you are keeping a guy in a round where you have a high pick, try to trade that pick down for a low one in the same round and pocket the difference. Keepers are tied to rounds, not picks.
