He Hate Me Some Me FF Keeper League

Well, I have a week one roster now - to be honest, it doesn’t look that bad. It’s the bye weeks where I will really by struggling.

I’m still a little surprised I got Brady at 7 - I didn’t really want him, but I couldn’t see pre-ranking him any lower than 6th. I thought he’d be gone by 6th, didn’t expect Barber. Really can’t say I’m disappointed, as I’m not sure who’s a better pick there (I think I had LJ ranked next in my pre-ranks).

Of course then I get left with an odd assortment of RBs - but all in all I can’t complain about where I got Edge, D’Angelo and Selwin.

I had no idea that Kevin Curtis was hurt, so I may very well have picked him in round 6 anyway. I’m still not clear on exactly how long he’s supposed to be out.

I think I’m fine at TE with Owen Daneils. He should at least be average.

And the rest… well, eek.
After my waiver claims, I’ve wound up with:
backup RBs: Lamont Jordan and T.J. Duckett. I’m just guessing here, not like there are a lot of good choices. Picked some names I knew, basically.
WRs: Darrell Jackson, Mushin Muhammed, Ernest Wilford. Jackson and Muhammed obviously have some track record of success, and for some reason I think Wilford will work well with Pennington in Miami.
K: Jeff Reed, Pit. He’s a kicker.
DEF: Arizona. OK I guess.

As to my prognisis for my team: 4-10, I guess. Brady will keep me in some weeks, and during the non-bye weeks I should be able to scrape out 4 wins.

Curtis Martin? You’re seriously setting your expectations for kevin Smith based upon Curtis martin’s rookie year?

Wow. Can I convince you that Andre Hall is about to become teh Next Terrell Davis? A trade can be made, Im telling you, for a back likely to approach 1500 total yards and 8 TDs.

Amen. I’m jonesing so badly for meaningful football that I’m going to watch an NFC East game tonight and enjoy it. I hate the NFC East.

Read again. I said, in italics, no less, that I wasn’t expecting that kind of production, but that I thought it was possible.

My realistic expectation is 1200/8, and yes, I’m quite serious about that. I bet LOUNE that he’d be Offensive ROTY (or would lead all rookies in scrimmage yards, I think).

Don’t forget, The deadline for my prop bet extravaganza is tonight at 7:00 Eastern. Take a shot, free equity on those prizes.

RNATB, you did see that your entry was voided, yes? You’ll have to resubmit.

I didn’t ask whether you were expecting that production, I asked whether you were basing your expectation on that kind of production. 1200/8 is a monster year for a rookie back. It is an almost unprecedented monster year for a back drafted in the 3rd round or later. You’ve latched onto a precedent and set your sights high. Well, drams are good.

Liie I said, can I interest you in a little Mile High Dream? If not TD then he surely carries a hint of Mike Andersen about him.

Watcha want for 'im, then?

Manning is a reasonable discussion. Grant was 3rd string in a bad backfield last year before his surprise arrival. The difference between he and Ernest Graham is that he no longer has Favre to keep defenses back on their heels this year. I’m not sure why so many folks look at 10 good games and think it projects to sustained greatness, but I disagree. Solid pick, but he does not belong in the same conversation as Addai, Portis, etc. Johnson gets eliminated on risk. 2 Monster years behind a great O-line. 1 bad year cut short by injury once that line disappeared and teh croyle era began. 3.3 YC average this preseason. I buy return to respectability, but too risky for a #1 pick while solid superstars are on the board.

Well, we could argue that point, but its a false comparison. Wayne, Fitzy, Colston, and Housh are not mid round WR. They were all off the board by pick 22. I got Derek Andersen in round 6. He scored more points than Brees last year, and about 2 points/game less than Peyton. The first 2 picks in round 6 were WR (Berrian and Coles). Owens racked 6+ more ppg last year than Berrian and almost 8 more ppg than Coles.

Teams need 2+ productive WR and only 1 productive QB. For mid round value, QB was definitely the place to look.

Amen, my brother. Amen.

Not sure I’m buying that. Remember, half of Brees’ owners were sitting him by Week 4 last year.

If I go by the analyses of my team, and past history; I see a championship coming this year. The worse my draft gets trashed the better the team does; it’s funny that way.

One question- do I have to email Ellis with all my roster moves, or can I use the drop/add from Yahoo for any moves? I did blow it on the Brown pick; someone snaked my first and second choices and I didn’t know about his injury.

Er… I hope you don’t have to email him, because I didn’t.

You have to email waiver claims. Right now, that means any Giant or Redskin. You have free reign to sign anyone else on your own.

does the “leading Munch 77-25 boogie”

I didn;t quite finish these last night, so I topped them of today while watching Braylon Edwards bounce my fantasy hopes off of his cement fingers. gah.

QB The NFL has become a passing league, so you passed on a top QB and chose to give yourself a dilemma every week. Oedipus approves, but I do not.

RB Picking first can be a curse, but LT is the cure. You avoided the temptation of the the flashy newcomers. Good job. Graham has a short pedigree, but he was a solid pick at the end of round 2. He might lose a few touches and receptions to Dunn, but he’ll see the goal line carries. I’m not a fan of Mendenhall, Taylor, or Morris – but you took them all in roughly the right place, and all are a single injury away from becoming a feature back on a strong running offense. LT makes any unit strong, but you did a good job of filling in behind as well, though I think you will suffer if you play Mendenhall in your flex all year.

WR Excellent 1-2 combination. One of the strongest in the league, though both come with injury questions. I am not a Chambers fan – he’s at best a #3 option in SD, but he will see some balls this year, so it wasn’t a horrible value pick.

TE Clark is a stud. I doubt he will repeat last year’s numbers, but still a stud. McMichael is a good reach in round 16, for potential keeper value (though his ceiling is pretty well established.)

DEF/K 1 each. Check

Keeper Potential Rodgers, Rivers, Leinart, Clark, McMichael. 3 QB’s I don’t like and 2 TE. eh Rodgers & Clark have the best potential value, with Clark the only stud in the group.

Mundi Measure City of Petra. Imposing stone edifices, but it’s all surface. The rooms behind are cramped and dusty. Still, there’s not denying the power of LT. QB and flex uncertainty are all that keep him from being a juggernaut. If AP, Fast Willie, or JJ Junior go down (not all that unlikely) he will be a QB coin-flip away from the championship.

15. (198) Mason Crosby
16. (223) Anthony Alridge

QB A tale of 2 Lazarus’. Lazarus of Brettany has been raised, and will pass on the miracles of Broadway. JaLazarus, on the other hand, will see his reward only in heaven, when he parts company forever with Al Davis. Ryan is a pick for the future, but a good one.

RB Injury risk, Ricky risk, Rookie risk, ambulance chaser, ambulance chaser, IR. Well, that’s 1 way to go. If AP has a MONSTER year you will be all right. If not, you will not. I don’t generally favor accepting high risk at pick #2, but if you decide to do so, you should have taken more secure options for RB2 and RB3.

WR Fantastic 1-2-3 punch. Calvin could be a valuable flex player for you all year. Housh and Holt are both solid 2nd tier guys. Good work . Randle Ell was a bad pick, but you probably won’t suffer much until you toss him on the waiver wire. Still, a lost opportunity.

TE Scheffler got a lot of good press, but I’m still unsold. Decent upside, but you will suffer in matchups against the true studs.

DEF/K 1 each, though you overpaid for the Bears.

Keeper Potential Slaton, possible. Johnson, only if he reaches his top potential or Roy Williams plays elsewhere next season. JaMarcus if monkeys fly out of Al Davis’ ass and become productive NFL wide receivers (and no, Ashley Lelie does not count). Ryan – very likely. He’ll have rookie struggles, but I like his long term potential a lot more than Russell’s.

Mundi Measure Stu Unger on bender. Sure, all the bets could pan out, but you took a prime draft position and turned it into a in hand of no limit. All in, baby.

13. (171) Derrick Ward
14. (194) Jabar Gaffney
15. (199) Trent Edwards
16. (222) Rian Lindell

QB Palmer is over-rated. Eli is under-rated. Together you have a QB dilemma most weeks, but a better one that Varlosz’.

RB Love Addai. Don’t love McFadden this year (loaded box, Huggy Bear, numbers skewed by weird college system, never shouldered the load in college either, etc., etc., etc.) Love Bush, but not Reggie Bush. You paid way too much for a part time back who gets most of his numbers in the passing game (would be different in a PPR league). Rhodes is pure handcuff. Still love Bush, but not Michael Bush either. What – couldn’t find a back in a 2-man time share so you had to pick the 3rd guy off the bench in a bad offense? Ward is nice, but June wants to talk to him about the Beav-er, Bushes).

WR I like Crayton – he could be a steal as your 3rd WR. What’s that? Oh. Bummer, dude. Didn’t get the memo that receiving yards count, too?

TE Shockey is a gold mine. For me, I mean. I can hate him as a player, a person, and a fantasy reach. You will regret taking him instead of a #1 WR.

DEF/K Check.

Keeper Potential Crayton is a strong likelihood. Manning, Brown, Johnson, and Edwards are possibles. Bush, Ward, Gaffney only if injuries strike the folks in front of them.

Mundi Measure Meatloaf in multiple metaphors. Nothing fancy, but filling and robust. Won’t leave you hungry an hour later and is also good in sandwiches the next day. Could be a classic, or could turn into Bat Out Of Hell 2, complete with overdrawn melodrama and a crypt scene. I’m more of a Dire straits fan, personally.

13. (172) Amani Toomer
14. (193) Zach Miller
15. (200) Matt Stover
16. (221) DeShaun Foster

QB Drew Brees is a stud. Delhomme is a strong backup at a good price. Nice work.

RB Love Westbrook. Believe Brown will win the RB competition in Miami before the season is out, though he will lose a lot of carries through the early part of the season. Deuce is done. Power backs with too many injuries rarely enjoy late career resurgence. Betts is an ambulance chaser. So is Foster, but at least Betts still has some pop. So, a great beginning, but problems after that, especially early in the season.

WR Evans is a solid #2, but a poor #1. Driver is a solid #3, but a shaky #2. Clayton is a solid emergency substitution, but you will hate life if you see him as a flex option more than twice this year. Porter is a solid . . . um, headache. The WR competition is weak enough in JAX that he might put up some numbers, Good luck figuring out which weeks those might come in. Toomer is a good band aid for when other things self destruct. Won’t win you any matchups, but might minimize the bleeding.

TE Witten == stud. Miller == wasted pick.

DEF/K 1 each.

Keeper Potential Pretty much nil. Only injuries or career years will make any of these guys worth +2 rounds next year.

Mundi Measure Charlie’s Angels. 3 hot leads, but once your eyes move past the candy you come to the sad realization that Bosley is going to get way more screen time than anyone wants to see.

15. (201) Deion Branch
16. (220) Carnell Williams

QB I love McNabb this year – was really hoping he would fall to me later in the round. Schaub is a quality backup with upside, though I think you took him a round early.

RB Barber is a beast. I’m not a big believer in Mendenhall, which means I like Paerker a lot more than most folks this year. He’s another guy I hoped would slide but you drafted a round ahead of me. I’m starting to not like you very much. You can have Kevin Smith, though. I don’t believe a rookie RB is going to become the savior of the Detroit offense. With your top 2 RB, you should have gone for best available talent here. Plaxico, Steve Smith, or Anquan Boldin would have been better additions. Leon Washington is a nice late round grab. Cadillac was a wasted pick.

WR Here’s where you paid for going RB-RB-RB. Roy Williams is a nice value. Weak as a #1, but not so far below the second tie that you will hate life. Galloway is a stretch as a #2. Streaky and uneven production – will kill you some weeks. Hackett is a guy that everyone else likes more than I do. I suspect that by the end of the year you will be on my side of that debate. Stallworth is a tease, and you will et blue balls waiting for him to put out on a week you have him in the lineup. Branch is much like Stallworth without the upside potential.

TE You paid too much for Benjamin Watson. He’s a late round reach or a waiver wire treasure, but cost way too much on round 7

DEF/K Reached early for a kicker. Shame. Shame. Shame.

Keeper Potential I actually think McNabb might be worth a #3 next year. Yeah – I drank that Kool-Aid. Schaub has keeper potential too. That’s about it.

Mundi Measure Roberto Duran. Not plashy on the outside, but that QB-RB combo can knock you out with either hand. He’ll make it to the post season before saying no Mas.

Damned Rookie – I’m going to avoid the rush and start hating you now.

12. (163) Kevin Walter
13. (174) Donald Lee
14. (191) Pierre Thomas
15. (202) Josh Scobee
16. (219) Tennessee

QB I like Warner better than Kitna. I don’t understand the love some people have for flipping the QB coin each week. You have 2 with upside, but each could tank as well.

RB Another RB-RB-RB guy. I’m a little scared of Jackson this year, but he’ll see a ton of touches. Jacobs is a beast, for as long as he stays healthy. Jones doesn’t have his burst anymore, but Favre will open things up for him a lot more than Chad ever did. JJ Junior was a bust in Dallas and will be a bigger bust in Seattle. Hightower is an ambulance chaser. Pierre Thomas is a nice pick late.

WR And another guy who paid the price for going RB-RB-RB. Jennings is a nice #2, but not a #1 with Rogers at QB. Burleson is a #3, and not even an exciting #3. Patten will be hit or miss all year. I like Kevin Walter a lot as a late round grab. He won’t play much, but will be a nice patch if the boat is leaking.

TE Donald Lee is nice value late. You’ll suffer at the position most weeks, but he’ll steal a couple for you.

DEF/K Yep.

Keeper Potential Hightower – maybe. Thomas – more likely. Walter – back to maybe.

Mundi Measure Jack Palance in City Slickers. His most important thing is 1 thing. Just 1 thing. Lucky for the rest of us, the game isn’t called fantasy running backs. When Billy Crystal can fill in for you at the climax, it’s time to realize that maybe your 1 thing wasn’t so special after all.

QB The best, and we won’t talk about the Yahoos backing him up.

RB Young and Williams have good upside. James is solid if unspectacular. He will grind out planty of yards at 3.5 per carry.

WR Jonhnson is a stud. Curtis is an injured dud.

TE No comment.

DEF/K No comment.

Keeper Potential No comment.

13. (176) Matt Jones
14. (189) Justin Gage
15. (204) Rob Bironas
16. (217) Ronald Curry

QB 2 mediocre QB’s to choose from each week. Why do people do this to themselves.

RB I like Gore a lot, even in a Mike Martz offense. Jones-Drew remains a keeper steal. Turner is an even bigger keeper steal. This is a solid threesome with the potential to explode on any given week. Scary. Perry and Norwood provide more depth than is probably necessary, but that’s like talking about Cindy Crawford’s mole.

WR Colston and Smith give you a stellar duo (once week 3 comes along). Jones and Gage give you next to nothing behind them. You should have grabbed a reliable 3rd WR instead of Chris Perry in round 6.

TE I like Heap this year. Of course, I like him every year, and every year he fails to live up to expectations. I don’t like spending 2 picks on TE in general, but Vernon Davis also has high upside potential, so I can’t bang you too much on it.

DEF/K Yep.

Keeper Potential Not Turner or Jones-Drew again, thank the football gods. Which means not much, frankly. Perry might surprise me, but there’s a reason he hasn’t cracked the lineup in 3 years. Davis could be worth keeping if he lives up to that vaunted potential. There’s always Matt Jones . . .

Mundi Measure The Exorcist. Yeah – I don’t care how cool and sophisticated you pretend to be, point out the overwrought synthesizer soundtrack, the uneven shot constructions, the lack of a reliable 3rd WR – you’re fooling yourself. That shit is scary. We’ll all be sleeping with the lights on when we see this on our screens.

13. (177) Drew Bennett
14. (192) Sidney Rice
15. (205) Green Bay
16. (216) Robert Meachem

QB Big Ben. I want to remain skeptical, but the numbers last year were incredible and I have a hard time framing an argument for why they will drop off. Pennington is a solid backup. Nice pair.

RB I;m not a big Lewis fan this year, but he’ll get some scores. I am much more skeptical of the rookie RB;s than most folks, so Forte doesn’t excite me. Handcuffing with KJ was a good move, but I don’t see either of them as a great #2 RB. Chris Johnson was a great value pick, though. A little thin, but good potential.

WR The king. And not a bad court, either. Cotchery is a great pick this year – he looks to be Favre;s boy in New York. I like White quite a bit, too. Reggie Williams is a good situational sub or bye week player. He’ll rack up some points on 2 yard TD grabs. Desean Jackson was on my target list, but you grabbed him first. Bastard. You went too deep here, in the end: Bennet was a bad pick, and I have Sidney Rice on my perpetual DO NOT DRAFT list, but Meachem was a great keeper pick late.

After the draft you traded Cotchery for Mendenhall. You will regret that. People fall in love with RB’s because of the idea that they always get touches. But that argument falls apart in the RBBC world we now live in. Parker is the man in Pittsburgh. Mendy is the leech. Cotchery is worth more than a leech.

TE Crumpler’s best days are long gone. You’ll be looking for a waiver wire pickup before the season is out.

DEF/K Ooops – probably shoiuld have drafted one of each.

Keeper Potential Cotchery, White, Johnson, Jones, Jackson, Pennington, Rice, Meachem. Christ on a stick – this team might still br crawling out of the tomb 3 years from now.

Mundi Measure Pork Bellies, man. It’s all about future’s trading. And Mr Valentine has set the price. The only problem is: nobody really wants the GI Joe with the kung-fu grip anymore, and counting on Christmas to come in rarely wins the fantasy football prize.

  12. (178) Limas Sweed
  13. (187) Nate Kaeding
  14. (206) Sammy Morris
  15. (215) Bobby Engram

QB There are three things I like about Jessica Simpson, and one of them is her taste in quarterbacks. Vince Young is a terrible backup, though. If you actually need one then your season is done.

RB Portis is a strange dude, but he will carry the ball 300 times, and not many folks can say that this year. After that, though, you are in trouble. Felix Jones couldn’t start in college. Chris Brown couldn’t start the season. Buckhalter and Morris are ambulance chasers.

WR Fitzz-Burress-Ward make a great top 3. I suspect that you will be using Ward as a flex most of the season. I’m all good with that. Hester and Sweed are longshots, but that;s what 4th and 5th WR are for. Bobby Engram is a mystery pick. Waiver bait for sure.

TE Heath Miller is a good one.

DEF/K Grabbed NE too early, same with Kaeding. Didn’t hurt you too bad, but overpriced nonetheless.

Keeper Potential Dreams and dust. Maybe Hester and Sweed, if either hits the lotto.

Mundi Measure It’s a Mitsubishi Spider. Seems kind of cool, until you hit the light next to the real thing. Then you realize the hot blond is looking past you to the gut in the Shelby Cobra. No glory here, and it turns out the maintenance record is poor and there;s no resale value either. Harsh lesson, but these are the ways a boy becomes a man.

QB Cutler is a good beginning. Alex Smith is a wasted pick. You’ll need to drop him and grab an actual backup one week.

RB Lynch is a strong value at #11. McGahee will be a decent performer by week 4. Good luck finding any value in rudi and Tatum this year.

WR Boldin is a nice start. Pretty much crap behind him, except Bowe. Who unfortunately has a crap QB.

TE Gonzalez is a nice start – don’t really need anything behind him.

DEF/K 1 each is a nice start and finish.

Keeper Potential Dwayne Bowe. The end.

QB Peyton’s place. But Jason Campbell? Really?

RB Not big on LJ this year. He;s still a fine player, but that line and offense are both U-G-L-Y. LenWhale will get his share of carries and short TD’s, but Johnson is the one rookie RB I like a lot this year, which means I think you overpaid a bit for White. Not a horrible pick at the end of round 3, though. Rice – not buying him. Sproles – not unless LT goes down. Jackson – see above but for Grant. This woudln;t be a bad group if you had gone heavy into WR potential this year.

WR But you didn’t. Holmes is a nice #2, but a weak #1. Coles is #2 on his team, not be a #2 on yours. Moss will be a mirage in the west coast offense. Occassional flashes, but he won’t quench your thirst. Jackson will tease in SD, but he remains the 4th option, and that can’t be good. Marshall – hey, wait. Marshall is a great keeper value. He flips this whole group upside down – damn, what a steal. Okay, so you wasted a pick on Bruce late. No biggie. Marshall-Holmes are a solid 1-2. Not quite enough to salvage your backs, better suited to complement than headline, but still solid.

TE Cool.

DEF/K Check.

Keeper Potential Marshall, certainly. Rice, Maybe.

Mundi Measure Steve Buscemi. Looks fantastic in the quirky independent films, but every time he gets cast in a major picture it flops like Favre in front of Strahan. You’d like to think he can break onto the A-list, and he keeps coming sooooooo close. But in the end, he’s destined for Spirit Awards, not Oscars.
[li] CarMenace[/li]1. (14) Ryan Grant
2. (15) Reggie Wayne
3. (42) Jonathan Stewart
4. (43) Antonio Gates
5. (70) David Garrard
6. (71) Bernard Berrian
7. (98) Ahman Green
8. (99) Derrick Mason
9. (113) James Hardy
10. (140) Minnesota
11. (154) Joe Flacco
12. (168) Adrian Peterson
13. (169) Eddie Royal
14. (183) Tarvaris Jackson
15. (210) Leonard Pope
16. (211) David Akers

QB I like Garrard. He’s clearly a second tier QB, but isn’t likely to hurt you. Will keep you in most games and may pull out a few surprises. Flacco is a good flyer late. So is Tarvaris Jackson – but you should have made up your mind. One or the other.

RB I like Grant less than pretty much everyone else. I think he will see a much more difficult box this year than when Favre was behind center. Stewart is a decent reach in the 5th round when you are thinking keeper, but you paid to much with a 3rd. Green is done. Peterson is 3rd string in Chicago – due that is desperate.

WR Wayne’s world will be sweet again this year. But you should have found him a partner before round 6. Berrian will disappoint. Mason will be solid, stolid, boring, reliable. Decent value pick, but you really don’t want him in your lineup much. Hardy is future potential. So is Royal. I could understand this group if you had clearly hoarded superstars in another area. But you didn’t. And you will suffer for it.

TE Gates of Heaven. Still. Pope as a late round keeper potential. No argument.

DEF/K Paid too much for Minnesota. Akers was better.

Keeper Potential Hardy, Flacco, Royal, Pope, Jackson. Good set of hopes for next year

Mundi Measure Which is good, because this year you are the Miami Dolphins. Set your stretch goal at a .500 season, be prepared for 4-5 wins, and look to the future.

He kept Welker already. Aren’t you prohibited from keeping a guy twice in a row?

You can keep a guy 2 years in a row max in this league.

Oh, okay.

Incidentally, I’d just like to mention that… You all got whooped by the new fish!

Nice to see so many draft reviews this year. To everyone else doing them: how do you think it affects my team that I traded Mendenhall for Cotchery immediately after the draft?

I thought it severely limits your potential at WR in the short term, and may shore up your backfield in the long term.

With the benefit of watching yesterday’s game, I think you’ll need to hope desperately for an injury to Fast Willie.

That said, you may be able to get some value for Mendenhall down the road. Probably from me, since I’ve got FW and right now it looks as though I won’t be needing to keep much extra bench depth at RB.
