Hello Dopers

Hello everyone.I have been making some posts here recently, and am sort of new here, so I thought I should introduce myself.

My name is Alan, I am 30 years old, and I live in a boring little town called Mishawaka, Indiana. There’s not much here really, except I live about ten minutes from Notre Dame University. ( I am not a student there.)

My interests are art, writing, reading, movies, pets, gardening, landscaping, video games, and last but not least, The Straight Dope! I have many other interests too.

My artwork consists of cartoons, sketches, portraits, caricatures, drafting, and miscellaneous other types of drawings. I work mostly in pencil.

I also enjoy writing: poetry, short stories, humor, personal journals, and I have an incompleted novel that has been several years in the making. I have tinkered with some movie scripts as well. I have never submitted, published, or sold any of my works.

For those who are curious about my screename, here is the story behind it:

Approximately two years ago, the neighbor across the alley behind my house passed away. The family cleaned the house and garage out and threw away a bunch of things that still looked useful, so I went scavenging to see if anything was of interest or use.

After digging around for some time, I found a wooden rack with a wooden box attached to the base. Inside the box were a bunch of keys, but one in particular stood out. It's silver and has a bunch of fancy ornamental engraving on it. It's about the same size and shape of a common housekey, but is like no key I have ever seen before. It also looks to be quite old, I would guess, perhaps 50 years or much more. I kept the key and now wear it as a necklace. I know the key is part real silver because it tarnishes and needs silver polish occasionally.

The magical part comes from the fact that in 1994, I began writing a novel, and the main object of the story centers around a silver key! I found this key, years later. Quite an unusual co-incidence.

Also, I once talked to a locksmith over the internet, about the key. He had some very interesting things to say about it. After describing it to him in great detail, he estimated it was quite old maybe from the 1930's or so, and said that the manufacturer of the key is a high security lock manufacturer who makes locks for things like governmental applications. It is, indeed, a form of real silver.

Maybe I found the key to AREA 51! (laughing) I have no idea what the key used to open, but the mystery surrounding it is absolutely fascinating. I often wonder, if just the key alone is so fancy, what in the world was behind the lock that it once opened? I think half the fun may be not knowing.

So, there is the story of my magical silver key. I am very attached to it, and it is quite special to me. I like to think of it as my lucky charm. It makes a great conversation piece as well. I have even grown to thinking of it as the key to my heart.

So, Dopers, now you know a little about me. I look forward to getting to know you and all of the SD knowledge I can absorb. Feel free to Email me, or instant message me if you use AIM. My screename on AIM is the same as here. See you around!

Welcome aboard…

I wish I had a cool silver key…

Seems like people are unfriendly today because they haven’t responded to your post… I see 5 people have viewed but no reply…

anyways…nice to have ya.

Cool story, Key! What a fascinating little mystery to have in your life, and what a wonderful coincidence!

Should we, perhaps, look for a series of books or short stories that all involve a mysterious silver key? Maybe it was an omen - you should get brave and submit something!

Oh, and welcome to the SDMB!

Well hello and welcome to the board. Just jump right in and sink with the rest of us. How about a drawing?

Hey there, and welcome to the board.

I’ve seen a couple of your posts, and you already look to be a great addition to our little group of psycopathic crack smok–I mean, posters.

Welcome Magical silver key.
I myself am a locksmith. I se keys all the time.
Not many silver ones out there. much less magical.

would love to see a picture of it though.
Curiosity being one of my characteristics.

Welcome aboard Alan. I wish I had been smart enough to say hello when I first started posting.

My screen name comes from Star Trek the Next Generation. In the very first episode of the show (actually the second episode because it was a two-parter) it ended with Captain Picard looking at the viewscreen in anticipation and saying “Let’s see what’s out there … ENGAGE!”. In the episode it summed up the general philosophy of the show and those to follow: to explore the universe (and humanities’ soul in the process) with open anticipation and the courage do it now. [moralizing]To me it means to be open to the uncertain opportunities of life and to have the courage to take them.[/moralizing] I thought I was terribly clever to come up with the anagram LSWOTE and even have a secret fear someone else will like it so much they will steal it from me, but I have been using it for 8 years now, and I seem to still be the sole possessor of it, or at least the search engines only return references to my homepages or pages I have touched.

Thanks for saying hello and Post On!

Hey I’m new here too! I too wish I had a magical silver key. The most magical thing i ever got was a coupon for $.25 off a can of Chef Boyardee Ravioli. It was good though

TIME ELAPSED SINCE I QUIT SMOKING:
Two weeks, six days, 16 hours, 47 minutes and 40 seconds.
827 cigarettes not smoked, saving $103.50.
Life saved: 2 days, 20 hours, 55 minutes.

Satan, I have to say that is one of the creepiest use of smilies I have seen yet.

Hey, Key!

I’m Yue Han, aka John. I’m from Elkhart. Well, right now I’m in school in Muncie, but my folks live there and I do on extended weekends and the summer.

–John
For those who don’t get it, Mishiwaka and Elkhart are two nearby towns in Northern Indiana.

Hi key! Welcome to the SDMB and MPSIMS. You must visit GD and GQ on occasion too!

Hope your good at acronyms.

:stuck_out_tongue:

Welcome, welcome! MagicalSilverKey. I love your nom de plume btw! I have enjoyed the posts of yours I’ve read so far, and am looking forward to reading more from you. That is a great story too, I expect to see it in print sometime soon! And, I’d love to see some of your drawings sometime, perhaps you can be persuaded to post some??? Hint Hint Hint

[slight hi-jack] Satan, my man! How in the world did you do that with the smilies??? Do you give lessons??[end slight hi-jack]

I am so out of it today. Sigh. I’m forgetting the main thing I do here. Please forgive my diminished brain functioning today, I had very little sleep last night. I am called a Hugaholic by my kids and friends for a reason.
{{{{{{{{{{MagicalSilverKey}}}}}}}}}}}}}

Welcome MagicalSilverKey.

Well, thankyou for the compliments purplebear, and everyone else as well. Purplebear… hmmm could you be a grape gummi bear? yum yum!Better watch out, Satan’s smilies might eat you up! ((((((((((((purplebear))))))))))))

Welcome, MagicSilverKey. Hope you like the place. If it’ll help you get comfortable, we’re gonna be drinking and partying it up over in Yue Han’s “I finally remembered” thread, as soon as I get over there for my 400th post (this is 399). The beer’s on me.

Satan, where in Hell do you get all those freakin’ smilies?

Thank you so much for the return hug, MagicalSilverKey! Any and all hugs gratefully accepted, anytime.

:o And, for the record, no I’m not a grape gummi bear. :o

Though I dearly love them (yes, I guess I do have some slight cannibalistic tendencies, why do you ask?)

And, yes, I like smilies, even though ChiefScott detests them.
