Hello from the tropics!

OK, in US$ that is what, $1.65?

I was in a shop in the DR and asked that I get local currency for change. She gave me an assortment of bills and change. When I explained it was for mi ninos, she gave me an additional handfull of change. Guess the peso doesn’t buy what it used to.

Have a blast! And happy holidays.

Some of us have been in the tropics for far too long, and are actually looking forward to some real weather (although going back to DC after Thankgiving was refreshing in more ways than one).

And we’re barbecuing this year’s Xmas dinner, while the neighbours attempt to celebrate the birth of the Prince of Peace by blowing up chunks of the neighbourhood. Firecrackers here consist of smokeless powder rolled up in newspaper, with a fuse stuck in. These range in size from 3" to a foot long. Last year, there were three fireworks-related deaths and over twenty blindings/maimings during the festive season in Colombo alone.
