Here’s the thing. There is a racist in me (and many if not all people), but I do not let him out. It’s aggression, irrationality and counter-productive to everything we reach for as a people that is a principled good thing. It’s wrong to appeal to irrational feelings, and it isn’t the amount of melanin in a person’s or peoples’ skin that affects their behaviors and manners. It isn’t genetics and it isn’t what color furniture best complements someone’s complexion. Pent up anger will not set anyone’s mind free, lighten his or her burdens or ease fears. The truth will set us free, nothing less. And the truth is that every person acts out a series of life experiences and is influenced by the people they are and have been with. The kindliest little old lady can be turned into a monster by a mob, and teenagers do the stupidest things around each other.
What we all must each do as citizens is what is good and what is right by what we know to be good and right in our calm quiet moments of sober judgment. The Patriot Acts passed by Congress in a state of fear and ignorance of the threat and for their jobs is a fine example that you have raised. The scapegoating of perfectly normal and assimilated Muslims turning an old Burlington Coat Factory to divide people for political gain is another.
Are we to be ruled by our fear and anger? Are we to put forth our inner demons and scream “nigger” fifteen times on a nationwide call in radio show and then decide that the complaints cramp our style?
Or do we recognize that all human beings have aggression internally and otherwise, that we sometimes do think and behave irrationally and that others do to, and the answer to those moments when the oblivious millions do something that pisses us off, is it good and wise and in the best interests to let the beast out, or respond gently and with love? God knows that I have let the beast out, and so has everybody who has ever witnessed it. Without exception, every time the beast has ever got out it has never made matters better for me or anyone else. I wish I had let it go after sober reflection, which sometimes takes days to cool down.
Racism and expressing it do no good in this world. It doesn’t do me any good, it doesn’t do the people it is shown to any good and it does not do “us” any good. Our public duty is to keep the beast contained.
Does letting your beast out make you a better person, does it make the people around you better people? The children who see the adult as an example, or the black person who is humiliated, or the other adult who sees an example of letting the beast out.
The answer is no. It does not. I would suggest that you release your anger, release your dislike. Love everyone. Even your enemies, who only try to hurt you out of their own wants, needs and foolishness are still just people. We’ve all been trod upon, none of us gets out of here alive. We all need more love, not more dislike.

The problem I have with this thread is its existence, which, sadly, is in stark contrast to my support of the first amendment. However, this thread and the OP are indicative of what I see as part of a renewed testing of the waters by racists of late. I believe they see an opportunity to escape the confines of the box of nonacceptance and shame and are making their initial forays into a public sphere they feel may be more accepting of their views. That they are stretching their tendrils into general media and public fora like this board is more than a little worrisome.
Racism should not be engaged. It is insidious and destructive, and should be stamped out, not encouraged, or made light of. That the OP has been proven to be a liar, when contrasting comments he’s made here and his account on the other site of the unprovoked assault perpetrated by his sister, and the unrepentant glee he derived therefrom, is actually secondary to the ludicrous idea that his beliefs are worth exploring or respecting.
Raging against the OP which, thankfully, has not been done here…yet, or attempting to provoke him with insults, serves no constructive purpose because he doesn’t give a damn about detractors’ thoughts or feelings. On the contrary, I believe it amuses and, more importantly, validates him, whether he’s expecting validation or not.
The resurgence of attempts to mainstream racism as an acceptable ideal, regardless how cordially it’s presented, should not be allowed a platform on this message board, and treating this as simply another thread opened by a crackpot, in my opinion, portends a future we will one day look back on with regret.
