Music advice needed. I’ve been listening to Queens of the Stone Age recently, all three of their albums, and the quality is just breathtaking. They have this unusual ability to produce a heavyweight sound without (literally) breaking sweat - the guy barely raises his voice to sing.
I am listening to other stuff and it is just not cutting the mustard, I keep going back to Songs for the Deaf. QotSA fans will know what I mean.
I need a new rock band to listen to that can elbow the Queens off my stereo. Do they exist?
I would suggest CKY’s album Infiltrate.Destroy.Rebuild. Definetely their best one, and it’sd so good, you’ll be asking for a band to get CKY - IDR outta your CD player.
Not exactly knowing your musical taste… I may suggest At the Drive In - Relationship of Command. They are a little less melodic, more hardcore. But far from metal. Perhaps check them out…
One album I can never get out of my CD player is any Rage Against the Machine CD.
On more of a Punk note, I’d say check out Strung Out - American Paradox. Don’t get me wrong, they are Not a 3 chord wonder punk ensemble, but more of a hardcore rock, with punk/metal influences. I am fairly fond of them.
Hope this helped you out.
QOTSA is good, but everything they’ve ever done pales in comparison to the output of Kyuss (and just FYI, every member of QOTSA is an ex-member of Kyuss). You would do well to check out Blues For The Red Sun or Welcome To Sky Valley.
I’ve been meaning to check out Kyuss for a while, what with the Queens connection and all. I’ve heard people rave about them, but we definitely missed them in the UK; they got zero coverage in the music press in the early nineties. That’s quite an achievement, given that long hair, guitars and an American accent pretty much guaranteed you the front cover of Melody Maker in those days.
(I recall seeing Thin White Rope on the cover. It was cool, but talk about minority interest!)
Thanks for the suggestions, the intersection of hardcore rock/punk is definitely my thing, throw in heavy metal and avante-garde art-rock and you’d have my perfect band!
Faith No More
Corrosion of Conformity
Pelican
Orange Goblin
Monster Magnet
…just to name a few. But if you really want to rock, check out these guys, www.deviltopay.net. Seriously. If you love Queens, I think you’ll thank me for this recommendation.
Btw, when Songs for the Deaf came out I don’t think it left my cd player for two months. So, you’re in good company.
