Help identify this song (possibly from video game)

I’ve had this sound file around for a LONG time (.XM format, which I’ve never seen anywhere else, although Winamp plays it just fine) but have never known the name of it. The filename is KNGDMSKY.XM (again, to show its age, obviously in 8.3 format) but the title display on Winamp shows its title as “94956” (which is how I’ve labelled it on my iPod. Something tells me it may be a song from a video game (the file name doesn’t dissuade me from that either).

I’ve temporarily put the file up here - note that it won’t be here forever so sometime after a Doper identifies it (and knowing this bunch, it’ll be before I press “Submit New Thread”) I’ll take it down. I have great faith in y’all, the power of the geek is strong here. Please let me know the real name of this song!

(Missed edit window)

Some more information that may help (although the 8.3 part is probably a tip-off), the file properties says it was last modified September 13, 1995

The Shazam app on my phone identifies it as *Tag Furs Volk *(with umlaut over the u) by Kritische Disstanz.

How long is long? Does the file have a creation date?

I ask because there are several video games with similar names that it might be from, and knowing the approximate creation date of the file could help pinpoint which ones are too new to be possibilities.

ETA: lol missed the spattering of posts there. Ok, so it’s at least 1995 or earlier.

I found this guy in South Korea with the same file posted on his blog.

He lists the title of the song or whatever it’s from as Kingdom In The Sky. If I could read Korean there might be more info on that page.

I sent him an email asking him about the song. I’ll let you know if he replies.

Impressive, Maggie! Two minute response! Considering the song is over four minutes in length, even more impressive!

I’m not quite prepared to call you the winner yet, though. Maybe it’s the skeptic in me, but the YouTube video is about 30 seconds less than the MP3, and it doesn’t have much of the song in it (one section is just repeated over and over), which leads me to think Kritische Disstanz may have just sampled “94956” for their song (they wouldn’t be the first rap group to do that … )

Entirely possible.

Strangely, yes, it says “September 7, 2009”:confused: (I’m guessing when I renamed it or moved it to its current directory, or what have you, it considers that the creation date. I’d go with the 1995 date myself,a s I was listening to it back then, and I didn’t even have a computer of my own! (it was on my dad’s computer)

Here’s the Google translate results of the page Snowboarder Bo linked to:

Not very clear, but it looks like this guy is asking the same question as the OP.

rowrbazzle beat me to it

Could it be the WWI flying game, Knights of the Sky? I can’t find any music for it online, but it sort of sounds like old-school-flying music.

Looking around, I don’t think this is from a game at all. I think it’s a mod, aka music file, shared around in the BBS days, made on a Commodore Amiga, and created just for fun.

And here it is credited to someone named Jason/Oxygen, Enigma.

And here he is on Facebook. Jason Chong.

Well, I can confirm that the song is at least from 1995, if not earlier.

It seems that DJ Blinky used a sample from it in a song of his called Crazy World back in 1997. Unfortunately, he has no idea where the song came from either, as he lists the author as “Unknown” at the bottom of that page.

The .XM format is a FastTracker file. If you want, you can load it and edit it in Modplug Tracker.

I heard from the guy in S Korea. he says he downloaded it many years ago from a FastTracker community site; he’s been trying to find out who wrote for years too.

I sent him a link to this thread so he can follow along with our efforts here.

Cite? I mean, since he’s not on my friends list, I have no proof he’s associated with the sound file.

Well, I’m not going to go through this whole page of music, but right off the bat, the song sounds like something from the Kingdom Hearts video game. But to me, the whole 90’s videogame soundtrack sounds the same.

p.s. I was SO hoping someone was asking about the music for Total Annihilation. I spent so much time at that loading screen, waiting for fellow lanners to get booted up, that it actually makes me feel all warm and fuzzy, and I have a file I found somewhere of it…that I put into my regular playlists. :stuck_out_tongue:
