Help me choose a hairstyle

I’m getting my hair cut tomorrow, and I’ve no idea what to do with it. Well, I have some idea, but nothing specific enough to tell the stylist.

My hair right now is just below my shoulderblades, and I’d like to keep as much length as possible. It’s all one length, pretty much. It’s also naturally wavy/curly, but easily goes straight with a brush and some gel, as my hair’s pretty fine. I’d like to get a cut that encourages it to curl. I love the idea of long, side swept bangs, but I wear glasses and have a little face and I’m not sure they’d be flattering. Kind of the like the first picture here, but softer and more Vernoca Lake-ish. I wear my hair parted on the right side usually.

I had an adorable chin length, flippy haircut a couple years ago, but having it that short made it feel foreign and wrong. I need long hair to feel right.

This is my face. Guide me, Dopers!

I think what you want is called “long layers.” There are a lot of variations. It stays long, but the layers give it a lot more shape and style. I recently got over a foot of hair cut off (donated to Locks of Love), and the stylist steered me towards a cut with long layers. It’s the best cut I ever had! I always had blunt-cut all one length hair. This cut gives me the advantages of that–I can put it in a ponytail, I don’t have to “style” it–but looks a lot better. I have straight hair. My cut is much like this one, but shoulder length:

That’s a neat site, btw. Maybe it would be worth browsing around there for ideas of what you like and don’t like.

Thanks for the link, Green Bean. I’ll look through it and see what I find. Long layers sounds about right. I like long hair, but it needs shape so it’s not so blob-like.

If you are looking for a nice easy but still “noticeable” change, I vote for bangs.

The “new” bangs call for very little hair…it’s not like you’ll lose any bulk, like the bangs I grew up with where half your crown is bangs…and they’re cut right beneath your eyebrows, and they can be brushed to the side or blow-dried over your eyes. I got mine about a year ago, and I love them. They soften your face and your hairstyle, and when you pull your hair up/back they add that extra dimension also. It looks like you “meant” it, vs. just “getting your hair out of the way.”

And I looked at your picture and I don’t think your face shape or your glasses would present any kind of problem at all. I think it would look really cute.

Plus, if you’re like me and you don’t wash/style your hair as often as you should, you can always just wash your bangs and get them all sleek and styled and you look like you did your whole head of hair, vs. just cheating. Trust me. I oversleep a lot and nobody ever suspects.

Long layers are good, too, for adding shape to longer hair…also consider just adding layers around your face and leaving the rest the same length. That way you don’t lose any volume or bulk but you get some shaping to play with around your face.
