What other hairstyles are there?

I really need a haircut. I’m happy with the style I have now so I might just go for a trim. But I would like a change if only I could think of something good. Perhaps, I don’t speak hairdresserese or I don’t have hairstyle vision, but all I really can’t think of anything that would be different but good.

At moment I have a shaggy, just over shoulderlength cut with layers at the back and a shorter bits (between chin and cheekbone) at the front. I’ve had the same thing for a good while varying from just past chin length to just over shoulder length. Whatever length, is still seems pretty much the same to me.

A proper short fringe looks stupid on me and is right out. Ditto for a real shortcut; it just doesn’t work on me and I like my hair to be long or long-ish.

I’ve had zillions of colour changes in my life, but I think the colour I have now is nice so that’s not really an option for change, unless someone has an absolutely brilliant idea in that direction.

Perms? Hmmmm. A bit worried as I’ve never had one and they seem a bit cheesy. Or are they really nice nowadays? Haven’t looked into those since the early nineties. Any expertise?

Is there anything else I can really do, whilst still having long hair? (I’m defining “long” as longer than a chin-length bob style). Any inspiration?

As you’ve probably guessed I’m female (one can never make assumptions, though), mid-twenties and fond of quirky black clothes, though stopping short of fully fledged goth or punkness. Not scared of more daring styles, though.
Suggestions appreciated.

Thanks

Check out some magazines. Find hairstyles that you like and bring them to the hairdresser. He or she should be able to tell you what will work with your facial structure and hair type.

What’s your facial shape? Hair type – wavy, straight? Do you like high-maintenance styles?

There’s really no way to do this over the internet. Go to a good stylist and ask what they think would look good. Be willing to like anything they give you, though.

How to find a good stylist: find someone of your aquaintance with lovely, healthy hair and ask where they go. That’s how I found mine

Thanks so far.

I understand that you can’t recommend a hairstyle for me, in particular, without seeing me.

It’s just that I can’t think of any long or long-ish hairstyles different from my current one at all. So I’m asking if anyone can think of any and then I can see if I can get somewhere.

Here is a good start. Knowing the texture and styling commitment, as Elysian said, helps a lot.

This seems to be bordering on gothishness.
