Today a friend posted a quote from Henry Miller: “To relieve a full bladder is one of the greatest human joys.” I chuckled, and was reminded of something I believe I read in Freud over 20 years ago.
It’s something along the lines that even the highest pleasure humans experience is merely equivalent to sticking your foot out from under the covers till it gets cold, then pulling it back in to the warm comfort of the blankets. (He certainly meant it pessimistically, but I remember thinking, “You know, I’m OK with that - I’ve done that and it feels awesome.”)
So, my Google-fu is failing me, largely because God forbid you try to search for Freud and “pleasure,” or Freud and “foot.”
Can anyone help me out?
