Help me identify this 80s singer/band

So the conversation started about soccer team names for a teen team. 1000 maniacs (the film) came up as a good name, the 10000 maniacs (the band). I pulled up a 10000 maniacs clip on youtube and it was not at all what I recalled, clearly my brain had misfiled this band name. I was expecting a different band entirely, and now I canʻt think who they are. The clues: probably late 80s early 90s. Lead singer has a snaggletooth and ~cafe au lait skin? Think Dave Lister. Possibly ska or pop/punk, based on the music I might have been noticing at the time.

Enjoying 10000 maniacs though.

Fine Young Cannibals?

Nailed it. I can see why those 2 band names got filed in the same spot in my brain. Thanks.

It wasn’t that big a stretch. My weird brain has facially identified Roland Gift with Craig Charles since the mid-90s for some reason, so that was the perfect comparison for you to make to get me to cough up the right band…

Who produced the Scorpions animal magnetism?

Dieter Dierks.

For the record, the movie was 2000 Maniacs, not 1000.

Damn, I owe another 1000 maniacs

I wonder if he ever worked with Brock Brock?

He did work with Guru Guru, a prog rock band from Germany that has been active since about 1970.

I think you’re making a kind of a joke there, but Dierks did eventually patent DVDplus (one disc with DVD on one side and CD on the other) and expand his operations to include live music film work, so he has been involved in making movies, just not dramatic films. Still, neither Brock nor Dierks is dead yet, so it’s always possible they could work together.

Oddly enough, Fine Young Cannibals were also named for a movie. First teaming of Robert Wagner and Natalie Wood, and the film debut of Redd Foxx.

17 minutes.

We’re slipping.
