Help me name a new puppy

Creative Dopers, I need a hand…

There’s a new puppy in my family, and the sweet little thing needs a name.

She’s a little girl, currently 8 weeks old.
Mostly, if not entirely border collie
she’s very sweet and cuddly… very people oriented, but like most border collies, she’s very mischievous , and likely to be trouble on four paws in the near future.

Our first thought was that she should have a Scottish or Gaelic name, since she is a border collie… but so far we’re drawing a blank. Any suggestions?
(if you can provide the meanings of the names that would be greatly appreciated)

Pictures will follow eventually, I need to borrow a digital camera

Well the stereotypical name for a dog is “Rover”, yet, I’ve never met a dog with that name.

I’ll probably never met your dog though, so…

I suggest the name Tara. (It’s Gaelic)

Siobhan (I think that’s how it’s spelled) It’s pronounced Shevaun. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

I would suggest NOT naming your dog something that is very uncommon because whenever you board your dog or take her in for veterinary care her name will get mispronounce, misspelled, etc.
I like the previous suggestion of Tara. You could also try Emma, always liked that one  Looked at this site:Baby Name site

I used to have a 1/2 border collie 1/2 jack russell, ended up looking like a miniature collie. We called him Shep (very original i know). Don’t know if that is a gender specific name tho, or even if that matters with dogs

Thanks!
Tara is actually my cousins name, which is why I thought of it. (My mother, and her side of the family are Irish.)

And as for ‘Emma’. Well stick a ‘G’ in front of it and you have the best name ever!

How about Colleen? I like Siobhan too…

Fiona. According to the above link:

I just like the name, myself.

Tara, unfortunately, will not work, because it is the name of a a family friend (of the older middle-aged variety) who would be likely to be quite insulted if our four’-legged “sister” shared her name.
I like it… but it won’t fly… another name that’s off the list is Bridget (as that is my brother’s girlfriend’s name)

Currently being kicked around is Fiona… and upon preview, I see that it means white… which would be rather approriate, since (unusually for a border) the majority of the puppy is white

Anyone know what the Gaelic word for trouble is? Or where I could find out?

As for difficult to pronouce/spell names… the humans in our family have difficult names. We’re all used to correcting people frequently. The vet would not be a concern there either, we’ve used the same vet for years, it’s a small town, and he’s never had trouble with names (ours or our dogs). And in fact has no problem remembering them on the street, without chrats to help him.

All of the border collies i’ve known have had short names. I have a ten year old dog and once she’s gone to doggy island I plan on getting a border collie. I’m going to name him Pip.

Other names for borders:
Fen
Fly
Wisp
Buzz

but I like Pip best.

Thanks all!

these suggestion have been added to suggestions from the rest of my family, and we’ll be letting the puppy choose her name over the weekend.

I’ll let you all know what she ends up being called.

How about Lizzy?

Name her Pablo

Whatever you name you puppy, do this to screen potential names. Stand at your back door and yell out the name three times. See if it doens’t sound too stupid.

Apparently that method works for kid’s names too.

How about Beefeater?

Sparky.

I’ve always been kind of partial to Finola. Of course my canine/feline companions end up with names like…[drumroll]Bugnorton[/drumroll].

Wow, jackelope, one of the kitties here is named Sparky (I just always wanted someone around me called Sparky). Sorry about the hijack.

Duh, How about DOPER?

It has meaning AND when it’s not listening you can call it DOPE for short. “Get over here Dope”. I like it. It’s settled.

I have found that if you’r patient, dogs will find a way to tell you their names.

Cats will keep you guessing.

What about Rumble?
