Help Me With a List of Great Monster Music

Apparently I have been possessed by the spirit of Linus. It’s nearly February, and so I have a driving urge to immerse myself in songs and music about monsters. Now, there are several strategies I could use to deal with this inappropriately timed urge: I could simply ignore it; I could try to determine what it is about late January that’s bringing to mind songs such as The Griesly Bride; I could even check with a therapist to determine whether this were a disturbing trend in my thinking.

Instead I fully intend to wallow in it.

But I have only so much of what I could stretch to meet the definition of being Monster music. If it describes monsters, zombies, mad scientists, it’s fair game. Similarly, if it’s an accurate description of biology, it’s also probably going to work, too - consider just how much fun a song about the naked mole rat might be, after all. For my tastes, I enjoy silly songs, and I wallow in the bloody, and bloodthirsty ones like I linked to above. What monster songs can The Teeming Millions offer to help me fulfill my Mission from Og?

The songs that I currently have that I would consider to meet my current definition of monster songs, so I can avoid duplications. And to spread the love for anyone who might share my view that is a fun topic for music. (Note that all credits most credits in this list are for the performers whom I have. Sometimes they are the creators, sometimes they aren’t. The exceptions are those taken from shows or operettas.):

A Monster’s Lullaby, by Meg Davis
[I’m Late, I’m Late, by Meg Davis [Mediocre Fred](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zai52Y9xNJE), by The Smothers Brothers (Note, the guy making the video I linked to has completely missed the point of the song, but it’s the only version of the song I could find online for people to listen to for free.)
My Old Flame, the Spike Jones version (It’s a real torch song)
Poisoning Pigeons in the Park, by Tom Lehrer
Attack of the Radioactive Hamsters from a Planet Near Mars, by “Weird” Al Yankovic
The Legend of Wooley Swamp, by The Charlie Daniels Band (I apologize for the video images - it was the only version of the song performed by CDB I could find. Ignore the pictures, just listen to the tune.)
Cows with Guns, by Dana Lyons
The Fairy Queen, by Heather Alexander (song starts at about 3:10 in the video)
Hap’n Frog of Cambreadth, by Heather Alexander
Twa Corbies, by Heather Alexander
The Witch of the Westmereland, by Heather Alexander (It’s based on Archie Fisher’s song, but has some lyric changes.)
Brannigan’s Special Ale, by Heather Alexander
Midsummer, by Heather Alexander (If Puck is not a monster, who would be one?)
Amoeba Hop, by Christine Lavin
Biological Time Bomb, by Christine Lavin
Theme from Jeopardy (with lyrics), by Christine Lavin (Sorry, I can’t find the lyrics online for her version of it, now. Nor does the time she did it on Good Morning America for Alex Trebec seem to have migrated onto You Tube.)
Three Ravens, by Peter, Paul and Mary
Squid Jiggin’ Ground, by Schooner Fare
Alien in My Nose, by Trout Fishing in America
Two Brains, by Trout Fishing in America
The Day the Bass Players Took Over the World, by Trout Fishing in America
When the Night Wind Howls, Gilbert & Sullivan, from Ruddygore
Re: Your Brains, by Jonathon Coulton
The Microorganism, by Boiled in Lead
She Blinded Me with Science, by Thomas Dolby (Sure, the monster is simply parts of himself that he’d repressed, but I like the song too much to leave it off the list)
Facade, from the OCA of Jekyll and Hyde
Good’n’Evil, from the OCA of Jekyll and Hyde
Hook 'em Cow, by Boiled in Lead
Carrot Juice is Murder, by Arrogant Worms
Rippy the Gator, by Arrogant Worms

So, what can you add to my list?

Werewolves of London by Warren Zevon

Swamp Witch - Jim Stafford

About a dozen songs by Bobby “Boris” Pickett and the Crypt Kickers (“Monster Mash”, et al)

“Werewolf” by Five Man Electrical Band should fit the criteria.

Synchronicity II by the Police mentions the Loch Ness monster and Moon over Bourbon Street by Sting is about vampires
Dead Man’s Party by Oingo Boingo suggests zombies while Weird Science evokes Frankenstein

Fun songs about monsters:

“Godzilla,” by Blue Oyster Cult
“Monster Mash” Bobby “Boris” Pickett
“Purple People Eaters” Sheb Wooley

Serious songs about monsters:

“The Thing that Should Not Be,” by Metallica (about Cthulu)
“Night of the Living Dead” by The Misfits
“Still Life” by Iron Maiden (about a monster in a pool)

Do songs about the devil count? I know lots of those. Few of them are fun, though.

On a similar note, Brains by Voltaire.
Also by Voltaire, Zombie Prostitute.

Blue Oyster Cult - Godzilla

I think Black Sabbath’s Iron Man should count.

Lordi - Would You Love a Monsterman, Biomechanic Man, Monster Monster, Pet the Destroyer, Deadite Girls Gone Wild, Night of the Loving Dead…plus a few others.

I’d say they count, and I know one fun one - CDB’s “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.”

I just decided it wasn’t going on my list.
Thanks for the suggestions, all!
On preview: Tengu, I’ve yet to check out your links, but those titles do sound promising!

14 songs about Vampires

A favorite: “The Cockroach That Ate Cincinnati” by Rose and the Arrangement. An excerpt:

How about the soundtracks to Little Shop of Horrors, Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Phantom of the Opera?
How could you do better than I am a dentist as done by Steve Martin?
or time warp?
Point of no return isn’t quite as much fun, but fits the monster theme…

Tons of songs by The Cramps: Green Fuzz, Goo Goo Muck, Voodoo Idol, Human Fly, The Creature From The Black Leather Lagoon, TV Set. Probably many more.

It’s not so much a song as a scene from a movie I’d completely forgotten: The Phantom of the Paradise

Iron Man by Ozzie. Who knew magnetic storms could turn you into metal?

“Frankenstein” by Edgar Winter Group

“The Creature with the Atom Brain” by Roky Erikson

“Chainsaw” by The Ramones.

“Bela Lugosi’s Dead” by Bauhaus

Damn right; gotta have some Zevon on here. Add Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner and possibly Excitable Boy.

And for Monster Mash, I recommend the cover by the Bonzo Dog Band.

“Moon Over Bourbon Street” - Sting

"She’s Got a New Spell" - Billy Bragg (witch)

"Witchy Woman" - The Eagles

"Rhiannon" - Fleetwood Mac (witch)

David Bowie’s Future Legend is a short spoken intro to Diamond Dogs. Together, they tell of a city infested with marauding mutants. And giant fleas. Scary Monsters (Super Creeps) is worth mentioning for the title, even though it’s not about monsters per se.
Roky Erikson wrote I Walked With a Zombie (the lyrics are just the title repeated a few times), Night of the Vampire, If You Have Ghosts, and other creepy songs.
Hammer Horror by Kate Bush is inspired by monster movies - at least the title is.
Bloodletting by Concrete Blonde contains references to the undead.
Sadly, Annie Lennox’s Love Song for a Vampire doesn’t mention vampires. The video makes up for it though.
How about You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch? Was the Grinch a monster?
Grim, Grinning Ghosts come out to socialize at Disneyland.
Blondie’s Rapture describes a Martian who eats guitars. Scary!

Does The Lurch count?

“Stay” - Shakespeare’s Sister. (Does Death count? Because she makes an appearance about halfway through the song – and video.)

“We Only Come Out at Night” - Smashing Pumpkins (arguably)

“Haunted House” - Jumpin’ Gene Simmons (also recorded by Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs)

speaking of which…

“Wooly Bully” - Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs

“Monsters and Angels” - Voice of the Beehive (OK, not literally about monsters.)

“Ghost Riders in the Sky” - Johnny Cash
