As a lark, in my current Mutants and Masterminds game, the local tabloid has sponsored a contest. The PC’s are all members of a teen superhero group called ‘FSG’. FSG as initials came out of a joke that they were the ‘Freedom Study Group’, but pretty much no one besides them knows that’s what it stands for. The tabloid has asked for, “What does FSG stand for?”, and the prize is a dream date with one of the heroes / heroines (boy, were the players surprised!).
For whatever reason, I’m having a horrible time comming up with what entries might be given. So, in a superhero world, in Freedom City, what might FSG stand for? More enteries, even silly or foreign ones, are better.
If it makes any difference, the team consists of:
Titanium Angel, a tiny girl with incredible strength and toughness
Zot, a speedster / gadgeteer
Mister Popular, a man who animates objects a la the brooms in Fantasia
Rune, a seeming angel
Jane Smith, a computer hacker with minor telekinesis
Sarah, a matter manipulator (can create and alter matter)
Inferno, a quick-tempered fire-user
Plus, two other ‘possible’ members- there’s debate on the street if they’re actual members or not:
A hairy, clawed man who has incredible combat skills, but has publicly devowed involvement (yet, he always seems to be with them)
And a mysterious young man who seems to appear and disapear a lot. Sort-of the group’s ‘batman’, but without the street rep… Yet.
So, suggestions for names? Go nuts. I intend on chosing one as the ‘winner’, but the more interresting or amusing ones I can get, the better.
[rant]Argh, not Mutants and Masterminds. Please try Champions. Or even Marvel Super Heroes if you like one its numerous editions. But not Mutants and Masterminds![/rant]
Freedom’s Silver Gathering (Silver as in Silver Age)
Freedom Society of Gotham (Gotham as in New York, which I assume “Freedom City” is a stand-in for)
For Secret Good
That’s all I’ve got. Sorry, mate: FSG is a tough nut to crack.
[quasi-rant]It’s mostly the level system which I think is odd. It feels like a weird hybrid between DnD and Champions, and they might have been better off dropping the level system. Character creation and advancement just feels plain weird in M&M. Though it actually is a lot easier to pick up and learn than Champions. And the book is pretty nifty, with the micro-comics all through it.[/quasi-rant]
Free Superhero Guardians? (If the group originally had four or five members, you could substitute that number for “Free”)
The levels in M&M exist only as a way to put a cap on powers and as a benchmark for how powerful starting characters and NPCs are. They aren’t levels in the sense that D&D levels are, and you can advance by power points, not by level. This is clearer in M&M 2nd edition, where the GM gives out power points but keeps the level the same until he thinks the game is ready to “graduate” into higher damage.
I really dig Mutants and Masterminds. For the rules, it’s probably my favorite RPG. I love the Toughness Save in place of hit points or health levels, and I find the combat system smooth, fast, and easy. Of course, I spend more time statting up my favorite characters from the comics than I do playing it.
Freedom Super Gang.
Freedom’s Society of Good.
It doesn’t stand for anything.
Freedom Super Group.
Family of Super Guys.
Freaks, Supers, and Geeks.
Freedom’s Silver Guardians.

Ah. That makes so much more sense now. I could never quite figure out how advancement worked, whether you got additional levels or just more powrs or what.
For the record, I have no actual objection to M&M, and it works better than most 3rd edition stuff becuse of the lack of 50 different types of bonuses (actually, one of the hardest things in 3rd ed is just finding a character sheet which can handle everything!)
I just wanted to make you think I was about to start another 8-million word criticism thread.
