I moved last weekend and for the last couple of weeks, I have done nothing but unpack and clean, unpack and clean. This weekend marks my first weekend entirely to myself (in about 6 months) with absolutely no work to do and no obligations.
So I’m planning on spending the weekend by eating fantastic foods and sitting on my ass, reading a great book, playing X-Box games or watching movies. This is going to be a fan-freakin’-tastic weekend! Anything, just as long as I am home in my new place, comfy and relaxed.
**So, Dopers, what do you suggest I do? ** The only condition is that I want to be home, not chasing all over town (though a few trips out are totally acceptable, I just don’t want to be bar hopping).
** At my disposal are:
Television with VCR and DVD player
X-Box console
Kitchen
Computer**
What movies do you recommend? What’s a fantastic junk food to eat while I watch it? Any X-Box recommendations? Any great recipes? Any websites I shouldn’t miss? What’s a great late night snack?
I plan on getting up late, showering (if that), and eating and waching movies and playing games and whatever else you suggest. Only no other people are allowed because this weekend is all about me being a lazy-ass and not giving a shit about anyone else. WOOO!!! I am so fucking excited! Thank you for the suggestions!
I suggest a B movie weekend, complete with alcohol and or drugs of choice.
In addition I would set up (in advance) a plethora of unhealthy food. Try to make it the whole weekend eating nothing but desserts; if it has to be a “regular” meal type food, make sure it’s something like deep fried prime rib, or a triple whopper.
Battle Royale is a fantastic movie, but for a day like this, she needs some fun movies, not something that’s going to make her think “Man, people really suck.” If you’re going to go Asian movie, go Bio-Zombie. It’s FAN-tastic. With character names like Crazy B, Woody Invincible, Jelly, and Rolls, plus silly zombies, how can you go wrong?
Also, stupid movies are your best bet. Stuff like Dude, Where’s My Car, Dirty Work, and Charlie’s Angels. Sure, those are all more modern ones, you can find some more “classic” dumb ass movies if you want (anything with “The Coreys” will do).
And if you live alone, I suggest hanging out naked the entire day. I just moved into an my own apartment and have been picking up this habbit, and it’s absolutely amazing how relax it makes you feel, and how much of a self esteme booster it can be.
I’ll be the first to suggest the many fine MST3K titles out there, perhaps most notably * Manos, the Hands of Fate*. We rented this two weeks ago and got kneewalking hammered. I think it’s the only movie so bad that three of the actors in it committed suicide following production.
The South Park movie is good for doing nothing days, and there’s always the Star Wars trilogy. If you feel arty, try Tampopo, Raise the Red Lantern, or the Seven Samurai. For all-American quirky, get Repo Man and Raising Arizona.
As for food, I’ve been on leave since Monday, so I’ve been experimenting. Nachos are always good, better if you don’t have to make them yourself. Chicken strips can be dipped into a variety of interesting sauces, and are fairly easy to eat one handed (the REMOTE, people, jeez!) I made fried risotto balls for breakfast yesterday with mozarella in the middle, and those were very good indeed. Buffalo wings with celery and carrots count as a salad, practically, and popcorn adds needed fibre to your diet. I had six strips of bacon for dinner last night, chased with a Mackeson cream stout, and while I’ll be on brown rice and green tea for a week, it was satisfying. Maybe more so if I had some gravy to dip.
You could always do what my friends and I did in high school over breaks–get baked, rent the Jaws trilogy and a bucket of KFC. There’s something extremely satisfying about crunching into chicken when Bruce is crunching into Robert Shaw.
Good luck, and remember to take a brisk walk to the liquor store every two hours or so to improve circulation.
Not being a gamer, I can’t help with the X-Box suggestions.
However, I suggest the following:
Lots of SDMB (a given) because of its entertainment value and to keep us updated on how the gluttony and entertainment is going.
The number of your favorite pizza delivery beside the telephone.
Beer (at least two cases, with a third for emergencies).
Potato chips, cookies, ice cream, onion dip, cheese, some good deli coldcuts, bread, and condiments of choice.
If you have it available, spring for a couple pay-per-view movies. After all, it’s your weekend, treat yourself.
Be aware, this is Labor Day weekend in the US, so Jerry Lewis will be allllllllllllll over the TV.
Google your butt off for a while. Put in stuff at random and see what happens. You’d be surprised what you can find. [aside] This is how I stumbled upon the SDMB[/aside].
Enjoy! I love it when I get to have one of these kinds of weekends.
Finally, after a year and a half plus on the boards, someone asks a question I can answer. I don’t know much about science or computers or history, but I have extensive experience laying around doing nothing.
Movies for a lazy afternoon:
Any MST3K video, though I’m partial to the shorts videos, particularly volumes one and two. The Full Monty
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
High Fidelity
Shrek
The Royal Tennenbaums
Snatch-if you feel like an crime comedy to liven things up.
If you’re in the mood for a cheesy comedy, you can always just turn on Comedy Central.
Food:
Nothing says “I’m here and I’m not moving” like a giant open bag of Cheetos and a smear of orange on your clothing.
Any of Ben and Jerry’s fine products.
Chips Ahoy now provides just about every conceivable variant on the chocolate chip cookie.
Some kind of candy bar in miniature form
Here’s a snack I used to make as a teenager on Summer break. Get fresh graham crackers, slather on crunchy peanut butter and top with small chocolate chips. Cover with another graham cracker and microwave for about 45 sec. or until its a wonderful melted goo. I haven’t brought myself to make this in about 15 years…old metabolism ain’t what it used to be.
Meatros - I picked up rum last night and I’ve got some Pina Colada mix. That covers the alcohol.
Twist of Fate and El Elvis Rojo What is Battle Royale about? I think some stupid movies are definitely on the agenda. Oh, and Elvis, great suggestion about unplugging my phone. That is a definite must. I hate the sound of it ringing.
** False God** Oh man, KFC. Wow, now I don’t know how I’ll quit thinking about that. That’s on the list of gluttonous foods for the weekend.
Swampbear, great junk-food list. So far, I’ve gotten some Pringles, ice cream sandwiches, Little Debbies - I’m going to get some cookie dough for cookies, too. Oh - and I’ve got the beer covered, too.
Fionn Great movie suggestions. I wrote down a few to get them to rent. Man, Cheetos sound good!
Thank you for the suggestions - keep 'em coming. It’s a 3 day weekend for this kid!
Tibs Little Debbies, now yer talkin! BTW the cookie dough doesn’t have to be baked. Of course, you probably already know that. If you do decide on some KFC, get a couple orders of potato logs and sides of the mashed potatoes and mac and cheese. The sides make great dipping sauce for the potato logs.
El Elvis Rojo gave you a good suggestion about hanging out (heh!) naked. It is one of the truly finer things about a weekend to yourself.
I’m gonna go for sweet-but-funny movies, if you know what I mean. Two recent ones I enjoy are Chasing Amy and Keeping the Faith. If it was out on DVD already, I’d add Bend It Like Beckham to the list, but it was just released this spring.
Pizza’s an excellent food, because it can be made in a lot of different ways, and you can have it delivered.
I’m a reader, and if you are too, I recommend checking some mysteries or other light reading out from the library this week. Then soak in the tub with a glass of wine or a box of chocolates within reach while reading.
You know what you also need- Pizza bagel bites, and lots of them or sushi; in other words, something supremely tasty, small, and easily portable. A ton of soft tacos/burritos work just as well.
Also, do you have a comfortable couch? Make it a point not to leave it. Set yourself up with tons of pillows/blankets/napkins/ and perhaps even a mini-fridge within arms reach. Leave the door open and use the phone to order a plethora of food. If you are really hardcore, you’ll leave a jar for your “elimination” needs…
Also, a tasty pie is Maxim’s beer pie-it’s easily makeable and sinfully delicious.
