help with Palm and Mac OS 10.2

I recently installed Mac OS 10.2 (Jaguar) on my iBook and am now unable to use my Palm Desktop 4.0 software. Apparently the operating system would prefer me to switch to iCal instead, which is fine, and I found instructions on how to import my old calender from Palm Desktop into iCal. The first step is to open Palm Desktop.

Here’s the problem: since installing 10.2, I can’t open the Palm Desktop program! When I turn on the computer, I get a message saying “Palm Desktop Background Unexpected end of file.” When I try to start Palm Desktop, I get the Palm logo splash screen, then two dialog boxes saying “Unexpected end of file,” then the message about “Palm Desktop Background Unexpected end of file.”

I’ve tried downloading Palm Desktop again and reinstalling, but the same thing keeps happening.

Anybody know what to do? Thanks!

This is the most helpful thing I was able to find:

Thanks, AudreyK–it certainly looks like there are a lot of different ways for this to go wrong!

Apparently a large part of the problem was due to my palm user data (and the backup…grrr) being corrupted somehow. I found instructions on what files to delete in order to do a completely clean install of Palm Desktop, reinstalled that, reinstalled iCal, reinstalled iSync, and that seemed to take care of the problem. I wasn’t getting an good install through the installer that downloads with Palm Desktop, apparently.

So, anyways, I lost all the old datebook data from the last couple years, but at least the Palm and my computer are talking to each other again. Guess I should have been backing the Palm data up when I back up my documents.

Yikes. That’s a tough way to learn that lesson.

Glad you got them talking again, though.
