Here I am, minty green. Something you want to say?

Which further proves you are living in La La Land. We aren’t rationalizing or arguing semantics, we are just poking sticks at two shit slinging monkeys. (uh oh )

So after all this about how you’re such a delicate butterfly with such sensitive skin that even a wisp of gossamer might abrade it…after all that, you’re only now getting around to telling us that you’re anti-semantic?

Fenris

“Poo to you with knobs on–no takebacks!”

This given anyone else the image of a penis with a miner’s hat?

That sure would be pretty handy here in this cave!

Big vagina bigots.

This thread is destined to go down in the anals of Straight Dope history.

This must be a new sport, right? We’ll call it…X-treme Sensitivty! Hey, maybe Nemo and blowero can get sponsers.

If I could kick the serious notch up one level (to 2) here, I do think that communication requires intent and commonly understood meaning. If I say “go fish,” and I mean jump in a lake – and reasonable people understand the meaning, communication is there. Doesn’t mean a couple of hypersensitive people get to define my meaning, and I think that’s the problem here. Who gets to define what I mean by an insult? I do, and reasonable people get to confirm it.

If 90% of folks think turdburglar is not even really insulting, than it’s not. The remaining 10% shouldn’t need to “sensitize” us to how it really is a horrible insult, they need to desensitize themselves to match the majority of reasonable folks. Otherwise we’re allowing 10% of folks to retroactively define our communication’s content.

Ahem. I don’t know how to use a search engine? I typed in “turdburglar” and the above is what appeared on the first page (in google world, the most commonly linked sites). I established that turdburglar has a non-homophobic usage. Good for me.
You have established that it also has a homophobic usage. Good for you.

Now, blowero, when a word has two meanings, one offensive and one not, how does one decide what meaning the word has in a specific context? By determining the intent of the speaker?

If I were on the street and I heard a guy say ‘come and meet my bitch,’ I’d be offended - until I realized the guy was talking about his female dog.

Why do you think that one meaning of the word “turdburglar” crowds out all other meanings?

Sua

I suppose that this isnt really eligible for threadspotting

Not quite sure what you mean here. Are you thinking of something like the real meaning of Nixon’s “Law and Order” campaign slogan supposedly being “put the black people back in their place”? (Or the later Willie Horton campaign issue?)

Now you’re being anti-menstruation.

Dang, another Red scare.

I rather enjoyed the Crimson Tide.

Aren’t we padding the post count here?

What’s black and white and red all over?

Pravda?

[sub]oh great…now I’ve pissed off the commie turdburglers[/sub]

I’m pretty sure there’s a really offensive Michael Jackson joke in here somewhere, but I’ll leave that alone.

[hijack]Slippery slope there SPOOFE. Is it a slur or is it empowering to the speaker of the word if they belong to the group which is offended by its usage?[/hijack]
