There’s plenty of mentally ill people on these boards who have never tried to scam people out of money by being lying, disingenuous shitheads.
Can’t you people understand? The executors of his trust fund sternly cautioned him that selling any more shares could put him in a higher tax bracket for FY 2012. And obviously selling any of his personal stock would result in capital gains taxes and might weaken his position on the Tokyo markets. If he had to dwell on these unpleasant costs right before his upcoming vacation to Tuscany he would barely even be able to touch his pasta primavera, and would probably spend the whole trip surfing his brokerage accounts online from the hotel room.
But seriously if you gave someone a gift because they said ‘help, I need money for an unexpected repair’ then you presumably gave it because you wanted them to have it whatever the other circumstances. While finances might not be the root of the problem after all they did perceive their situation as being problematic to the point of asking for help. I don’t think this was an outright fraud as some are saying. Often when someone winds up in a situation where they need to ask for help they are wrong about what they think it is that they need help with.
(I’m just glad to know I can always turn to you guys if my dog’s jacuzzi finally breaks. My brother was supposed to repair it years ago!)
Maybe other Dopers know more about Lute than I do, but there wasn’t enough information contained in the OP to warrant even looking at my wallet. No explanation for why $3000 was an insurmountable expense. No explanation why he was coming to the Dope for help. No description of the “we” involved (children? spouse? elderly parents?) Not even background information about the kind of domicile the guy was living in (I assumed he was living in an old shell of a house he’d inherited from dead parents). The OP was essentially “Brother broke HVAC and won’t help me no more. Now I need $3K. Gimme.” He could have expended a little more effort to illicit sympathy, IMHO. Anyone who would have written a check based on such sparse information almost deserves to be taken advantage of.
