Here is one I had written a while back. It was written as a toast, but I never actually got the chance to use it as one :
Humphrey Bogart was wrong. We’ll get to that in a minute.
When two people fall in love it’s only natural for them to want to spend a lot of time together. If love stays, eventually they decide they want to spend the rest of their lives together. Which is what you’ve decided to do.
You are the lucky ones. Some of us don’t have that option.
But there will be naysayers. Those who will tell you that it’s too soon. Those who will tell you that it won’t last. That love is nothing but a shadow of things not real.
Don’t listen to them, because here is truth : that the two of you are in love.
So, be good to each other. Support each other. Treasure each other. Never let a day go by where you don’t tell the other how much you love them.
Because when you get right down to it, Humphrey Bogart was wrong.
Regardless of what he said at the end of Casablanca about it not mattering a hill of beans, two people in love is one of the most important things in the world.
My version of Leaper’s is a fav: “Damn few like us and they’re all dead.”
“To health, happiness and inebriation” always works when I’m too drunk to think of any others.
“May those you love you, love you
For those who do not, may God turn their hearts
If He will not turn their hearts, may He turn their ankles
So that you will know them by their limp”
“To the sins of Passion, and to the passions of Sin.”
