Fresh from last week’s annual jaunt into the life of our favourite ambiguously moral muggle, we are expected to catch up with the rest of the Folk With Abilities.
After receiving a tip from Rebel, Matt (Greg Grunberg) and Peter (Milo Ventimiglia) race to Building 26 to rescue Daphne and recover files that will expose the government’s plans for those with abilities. Claire (Hayden Panettiere) finds help from an unlikely source in smuggling Alex (guest star Justin Baldoni) out of the city. As Sylar (Zachary Quinto) and Luke (guest star Dan Byrd) continue their road trip, Sylar begins to have memories of his father that lead him to the truth about his mother. Meanwhile, The Hunter (guest star Zeljko Ivanek) puts his own agenda into action with an explosive surprise for one of our heroes.
Claire, sweetie, when you get a boy in your bedroom, wearing a turtleneck is the wrong fashion choice.Speaking of which, I really hate Sylar’s hair this season. One should never take inspiration for one’s coiffure from 70’s Elvis.
This ep sounds a lot like the one before Cold Wars, but, uh, slightly later in the day. Possibly later that week.
The dialogue in this episode is awful. In particular the young people. Claire, the dude with her, and the kid with Syler. Horrible dialogue that sounds like it was written for characters who aren’t children.
First off, they shoulda gone with “All Along the Watchtower.” Fleetwood Mac? Not so dramatic.
Second, oh my GOD the writing sucks so bad. Who could have guessed that waterbreathing boy would find a way to use his power to save himself? How could Peter possibly survive the fall from a building when only his brother could possibly fly in and save him?
Sylar’s storyline? so over that. At least he ditched his annoying boyfriend.
Mrs. Bennet could not have been any more awesome. Hunter Dude could not become any more of a caricature.
How long until the writing staff changes? Not sure if I’ll make it that long…
Yeah, I’m usually the biggest defender of this show but this was a painfully bad episode. It’s like they went back all the way to the second season. Especially with Claire’s storyline.
Also, what ever happened to Matt’s moral dilemma over controlling minds?
Probably got sent the same place they sent the way his powers used to work. Since he left his dad all mind-trapped and didn’t have to continue concentrating to do so. As his dad had done before… and they have the same power.
There’s probably like some Island of Lost or Retconned Powers somewhere out there… with Matt’s old telepathy, Claire’s and Sylar’s old regeneration powers, all of Sylar’s stolen-but-forgotten powers.
… You know, it’s not even that fun to mock this show any more.
This show could really use some killer robots out to kill all humans, though. Or radioactive dinosaurs on the loose. Super-intelligent talking gorillas. Bionic sasquatches working for aliens secretly observing Earth.
Hell, anything fun to get out of this rut they’ve dug themselves into.
They keep churning up the same tropes, over and over again, but they either remove all the fun parts, or stick to the tired old stuff.
They’ve got an overblown caricature as the villain this season… but they don’t let him chew scenery or twirl his moustaches or even come up with a maniacal yet grandiose plan. His plan with Matt is… a little boring.
On the other hand, they toss us the “somehow, Aquaman’s powers are just as useful as the rest of the Justice Friends’, again, this week” trope.
To be the voice of dissent, Lightray, I thought this episode was very good, one of the best since season one. Sure, there are some hokey elements like the underwater kiss, but things have progressed nicely, and we have some valuable insight into Sylar’s past. You said “they toss us the …Aquaman’s powers are just as useful…trope” but I didn’t get that at all. They were useful in one instance, hiding. It’s not like they tried to force anyone to think that Alex was going to be the next great hero, he was just a kid that happened to have an ability, one that is totally benign, who was being hunted. You’ve bitched about the writing SO MUCH that I begin to think that you watch JUST to find something to snark about. I can’t remember a Heroes thread where you didn’t bitch about the writing. You’re becoming more of a caricature than Danko could ever be.
That being said, of course it’s your opinion and you’re entitled to it. It just seems odd that week after week after week you’re complaining about poor writing and yet you still watch and comment. What’s the point?
One good point, this episode settled the discussion in the last topic about whether Peter can control absorbing powers and whether it works through clothes.
