Heroes 1/29 - "The Fix" (SPOILERS)

What first pinged my gaydar on the character was when he made a reference to Claire “coming out” to her parents about her powers. Some here dismissed that but it still caught my ear. Then there’s all the stuff about him getting an erection in the locker room, other teasing about how only one of them can wear the crown at Homecoming, his joke about an anal probe, his somewhat loud denial of liking Claire, his response about being comfortable with himself. Plus the “unsure” on his mySpace profile (“unsure” is code for “gay as a damn goose”) along with his favorite movies (“Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” and “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” among them). So no, nothing concrete on-screen of Zach saying the words “I’m gay” but it seemed pretty clear to me that the creators were going that way. Plus the creators confirmed they intended the character to be gay.

So has anyone other than me been receiving emails from Primatech Paper regarding extras on their web site? This morning I got a link to a password protected site with a dossier on Wireless (along with a password). There were several other areas for other yet to be named characters, also password protected (no password given - yet). I take that to mean there are new characters coming, and that the site will have extra info on them at some point.

I doubt it’s substantive at all, but for a brief moment, I thought that Zack was Claire’s brother, and he knew, and she didn’t. Perhaps half-brother. I can’t remember exactly why - maybe I’ll rewatch it on the NBC site if they allow moving around within the video, but it was when he was saying something about her not knowing who her dad was.

Of course, there really isn’t anything to support the idea and a few that counter it, so it’s probably nothing.

Isn’t that myspace thingy a bit of fanfic? I thought that was put to rest a while ago.

I’m so glad the Mrs and I are not the only ones who think that. She’s annoying and the whole family are horribly impossible to sympathise with.

Well I don’t hate their story. I’m just not loving it yet. They could almost put some of this DL/Niki/Micah story in a web-comic for me to read later.

You know what would make it pretty interesting though? Jessica is the good one. See, Jessica as far as we’ve seen mostly protects Micah. She stole 2 million dollars, bought a convertible car, threw DL across a room and snapped a night stick in half. But have we seen her rip bodies in half? Okay, shooting DL in the head wasn’t very nice. But why shoot him if she could rip him in half?

Maybe Jessica isn’t the one we really have to worry about.

Looks like you win the No-Prize for this episode, Ethilrist. Assuming that any references to Zach being straight are errors, of course. I don’t think you can win one for retcons. BTW: Can someone refresh my memory as to why Zach is suddenly perceived as straight, other than comments by the NBC publicist? I’ve taped all of the episodes, but I’m too tired to look through them at the moment.

The Niki/Jessica/Micah/DL storyline is getting really old, really fast. I almost fell asleep during the jail scenes.

Makes more sense than punching time…

I don’t think it’s possible to pull out a multiple personalities thing and not have it be total cheese. It just does not translate well to storytelling or acting or anything. I don’t think the actress is doing a bad job with it so much as that you can’t possibly do a good job with it. The constantly switching faces/characters/etc is just painfully cheesy to me.

Edit: Whee, my first edit. To add - it wasn’t nearly so bad when Niki would black out, and awake later, and not know what happened. It’s the rapid-pace switching back and forth that’s really the problem.

I am unaware of anything indicating that the myspace profile is anything other than an NBC creation.

Because the one time she fought DL hand to hand he left her unconscious on the bedroom floor. She can’t rip him in half is she can’t touch him.

That’s pretty much it. Zach’s sexuality was never explicitly stated within the confines of the show.

For one thing didn’t it have their ages as 18?

That’s what confuses me. If NBC put that site up, why is Claire 15 now?

Maybe a mistake on the part of whoever set it up, or else the ages hadn’t been settled on, or Zach and Claire were originally supposed to be a few years older, or there are myspace features that one has to be 18 to utilize and the makers of the page wanted the Heroes profiles to have that utilization. I have no idea. I still haven’t seen anything which indicates that someone other than NBC set up any of the Heroes myspace pages.

The ages had to be set to 18 because one of the new security measures of myspace is to automatically make any underage profile “friends only” so it wouldn’t make for very effective adverticement.

Didn’t Mohinder mention a specific number of known “Heroes”, like 36?

As I stated in a later post I don’t really want to watch a show about 15 year old children’s sexuality, whether or not it’s realistic for them to think about/have sex. See below.

I don’t have any problem with a gay character, I wouldn’t have cared if Zach was gay. However, if I wanted to watch an angsty teen drama about kids coming of age I’d watch a different TV show. It’s enough that we have Claire being angsty about her super power. I also don’t think we need to be focusing on any 15 year old’s sexuality, sure they do think about sex in real life and some even have sex but again this kind of thing isn’t why I watch Heroes. Getting into an underaged peripheral character’s sexual orientation seems to be a waste of storytelling time that could be spent on the actual Heroes (just not the Niki/DL family or the Parkmans).
And for the record, one does not have to be gay as a teenager to feel like an outsider or misunderstood. I was once a teenager and I thought no one was like me, no one thought like me and no one understood me. I felt like an outsider. I wasn’t gay, I was just a teenager.
And with that I’m done discussing the gay aspect of the show in order to avoid any future misunderstandings.

I was a bit suspicious of the psychologist when she kept calling it Multiple Personality Disorder, I thought the updated term was Dissociative Identity Disorder?

No kidding. I am making one heck of a conscious suspension of disbelief for that explanation. As far as I know (and someone correct me if I’m wrong), the Human Genome Project simply identified all the human genes and mapped all the base pairs - we haven’t got the faintest clue what most of them do at this point. Not to mention how he would have managed to know which humans out of 6 billion have any particular combination of genes. I’m going to need a whoooooole lot more explication on this point. Mayber Mohinder’s dad was also a superhero, and his power was magically knowing everybody’s DNA.

(Mohinder’s superpower is looking damned hot. Hot, hot, hot.)

Not to mention, how on earth did he find Claire? DNA sniffer? Even if he could geographically locate the areas where mutations are likely to take place, how would an adopted child geographically far from her birthplace be found that way? And even if he did identify her mom, how could he have traced through to Claire?

Very weak explanation. But I suppose that was the only way…

Because, duh, don’t you know that the Human Genome Project actually took DNA samples from every human alive, and categorized them all in an easily searchable database, where we know the meaning of every marker in everyone’s DNA? That way, all you have to do is have a computer search through DNA for super power strands… just like searching a fingerprint database.

(This show would be much better if they’d stop making us wince by making a main character a geneticist and trying to inject ridiculous psuedo-science into the whole thing. It would be better off if it were just left as a mystery)

Oh c’mon. It’s not every human alive. Just the ones who are gullible enough to go to the doctor and let them take a blood sample. You just know the government is storing it all. Haven’t you watched X-files?

I do wish they’d at least have changed the name, though.
