I think he lifted it off Chandra. But hey, the best part of the ep? Thompson and his pocket fire extinguisher “Yeah, *fuck you * Smokey!” 2nd best? Pie.
I thought that was what his sly smile after successfully de-mind-wiping Angela indicated – that he’d merely set into motion a plot to eliminate Arthur and usurp his place.
Also, for this many flashbacks, I didn’t really notice any obvious inconsistencies; I thought it was nice how they worked in the Claire/train wreck thing. However, Sylar and Elle, I found hard to buy, too.
Or, as I said earlier, he read Knox’ file. He was Noah’s partner when they were going to get the Big Haul (Knox, Flint, and Peter). Noah handed him a stack of files and told him not to go near the smörgåsbord.
Before that, he was following Dr. Suresh’s lists that he had stolen.
There is no need for him to have a special power detecting power.
Maybe so. It just seems like Sylar has shown an inherent ability to sense something about people’s abilities before; when he first tries to brainalyze Peter he says “you’re like me; I’d love to see how that works…” Now, granted, he could just be making an inference here, but the impression I got was that Sylar can sense power the way that an animal can sense fear (or the use of a can opener, depending on the animal).
I used to think that too, and maybe still do but it wasn’t working very well back when he first went after Claire because he ended up attacking bitchy cheerleader instead. Although, Claire and her were together at the time and he may have just gotten confused as to which one was powerful.
I was curious about Arthur’s power. He seemed to have just a telepathic power initially. I suppose he could have taken this from someone like Maury Parkman and maybe that was his only power but the others must have known what he could do, otherwise why would Adam be so scared when he knew what was going to happen?
He seemed to have the ability to plant ideas in people’s heads, Parkman-like, but if he swiped it, then it had to be someone else’s power; if he had Maury’s power, then Maury would be powerless. Maybe there was another Parkman in the family that Arthur got it from. We also didn’t see him use any other powers, but that could just mean that Arthur is careful about what he reveals about himself to others. As you pointed out, Adam was pretty freaked by him.
Makes me wonder, if Arthur has the ability to “convince” people to do things, why he wasn’t able to do that to Adam. Maybe it’s something like hypnotism, where suggestibility is necessary for it to work.
Hey, did anybody go online and watch the episodelet about the guy in Lima?
Arthur doesn’t have the Parkmans’ power – he can only implant suggestions, not read minds too like Maury and Matt can. That was the point Angela was making during the soup incident.
Although I am curious why Arthur didn’t get suspicious with the Haitian lurking in the background at dinner.
“God didn’t give you brains, he gave you a big sister”
Hee!
First episode in a while which I really liked. No over the top emoting, except for Angela (which was actually somewhat warranted), and Noah. Elle/Sylar was bad, but at least they weren’t acting totally out of character. Noah, on the other hand…
Actually, with the timing of her saying that and the appearance of the Haitian, I took it to mean that normally he CAN read her thoughts, but since the Haitian was there, he was rendered powerless; thus her point was more like, “with my friend here, you won’t be able to use your powers to get out of this one.” I didn’t take it to mean that she was taunting him about an inability to read her thoughts normally; why taunt him about not being able to use a power he never had? That would be like taunting him with “why don’t you just create an ice sculpture out of thin air? Oh, that’s right, you can’t!” Only makes sense to taunt if a power normally available is rendered unavailable.
I wouldn’t be so quick to count Hiro out, there was no power stealing special effect. It wouldn’t be a cliff hanger if it was a foregone conclusion. My guess is Hiro freezes time and gets away, or Ando saves him.
Either I have trouble expressing my thoughts or people here are too nitpicky. I did say a power “like Maury Parkman’s”, not “Maury Parkman’s power” and not “exactly the same power as Maury Parkman’s”. I guess I should have just left it at a telepathic power and not mentioned Parkman. Also, it seemed as if his power of suggestion worked through eye contact.
I was wondering where he got this power and if it was the only power he displayed and if so why did Adam seem to know what was going to happen to him? It seemed as if it was the only power Arthur had that was known to the others but we know his power is absorbing other powers, so either he only took one other power at this point or he didn’t use other powers he had taken. But then how did Adam know? Hmm.
yeah, I’m thinking a rock to the head for Mr. Petrelli…
One thing I’m getting a bit irked by is “company agent with one-shot taser goes up against supervillain with some infinitely-usable potentially extremely destructive special ability… and always makes the arrest”. If I was even remotely evil and could shoot fire out of my hands, no way some gimp-ass agent with a taser would get close enough to take me down.
This people aren’t really super heroes and villains they are supposed to be just regular people going against trained profesionals. It makes as much sense to me as a karate master beating the shit out of a regular guy with a knife. Besides the two fire siblings were in a train car full of gas cans so they couldn’t use their powers.
Yeah, that bugged me, too. There should’ve been roasted Agent after that scene. I’m also getting a bit tired of tasers always knocking people out. They don’t. They just incapacitate, and generally only 'til the power’s turned off.
At the end of the episode, my wife asked me, “Do you still enjoy this show?” I don’t. I like what it could’ve been, but the show never really lived up to its potential.
Yabut- Fire extinguisher!* It’s the Ewok defence- simple tech + crafty always beats super-nuked, moustache twirling, laser to the crotch evil. Also see: Lyle, Elle, pail o’ water; Mohinder, Sylar, bulletin board.
*Fire extinguishers being the weapon of choice for unabilitied hero self defence- Matt & HRG try to kidnap Molly in S1? Mohinder lays down the fire suppression smack to the head on Matt. Fire twins robbing a 7-11? Foam 'em.
Bad luck, that.
Yeah, it’s not like they idiotically decided to climb aboard a train car full of gas, rendering their abilities too dangerous to use, or anything.
…oh wait…
I’ve have decided that if I were able to choose an ability I would not want to be a future painter, it really messes with their heads.
