Hey Lawyers - I have a question

My friend keeps receiving harrassing e-mails from a lawyer - a federal government employee no less. She never replies, but this person is relentless. Is there anything she can do to stop this?

(Mods, can you please delete my other post with the same title? The link is there, but the message never appeared.)

You haven’t given us nearly enough information. For instance:

  1. What state is your friend in?

  2. What are the e-mails about? How are they harassing? Can you give us an example?

  3. What agency does the lawyer work for?; and here is a practical one:

  4. Why can’t your friend either delete e-mails from the lawyer without reading them, or filter them out entirely?

  1. VA
  2. Smarmy, bullying jabs from a self-important blowhard - imagine someone constantly poking you with a stick.
  3. DoJ
  4. Good advice. I’ve already suggested it though and she didn’t take it.
Anyway, I was mainly just curious as to whether or not there was any legal recourse. Is there such a thing as an anti-harrassment law?

Ok. You still haven’t told us what the e-mails are about, so that may limit my suggestions.

Yes there are anti-harrassment laws. Some are broader than others.

Here is one that may apply:

There may be others. Your friend should contact the local police and/or prosecutor. She can also complain to the DOJ, especially if the lawyer is harrassing her for extra-curricular reasons.

Similarly, the lawyer may be violating some federal laws. You can have a chat with you local US Attorney about that, but I get the discussion won’t go very far.

Start with the state law.

Hope this was helpful.

You could consult a local lawyer instead of taking legal advice from anonymous posters on a message board.
Or at least, that’s what I would do if I were you.

Uh, yeah. What he said.
