Hillary just lost the election.

That’s gonna leave a mark!

Nah. He probably uses a c-pap machine and takes a boatload of medications, and no one is allowed to see this except Melania.

So, on the basis of no evidence, and the fact that historians have discovered nothing to suggest that Mamie was “calling the shots,” you conclude that Mamie must have been calling the shots.

Genius!

It is available at JSTOR. You can register for a free account, and they will let you have about three articles free every couple of weeks.

I have just downloaded the article, although i’m busy right now and don’t have time to read all 20 pages. A quick scan suggests, however, that the main focus of the article is the fact that Eisenhower relied on a notion of Team Government, and he put in positions of influence people who thought like him, and whom he felt he could rely on to get things done. He insisted that he was in charge, but he trusted his team to implement his policies. The author argues that this resulted in some problems, both in terms of everyday processes and big-picture politics. The conclusion says:

Mamie Eisenhower is mentioned exactly twice in the text of the article, and neither instance makes any suggestion that she was involved in making policy decisions or acting as some sort of surrogate for the President.

“No-one’s ever found any evidence to contradict my wild-ass guess, so it must be plausible” isn’t how historical analysis works.

“Feeling great” immediately after attending a 9/11 ceremony?

So she’s sickly and she hates America? Nice.

Oops.

At least she didn’t ask where the nearest FireHouse Subs station was…

My bold.

You took that comment completely out of context.

First, she spent AN HOUR AND A HALF at the memorial site.

THEN she felt ill and went to Chelsea’s apartment and spent some time there.

THEN, LATER she came out of the apartment, presumably refreshed, and said, “I feel great.”

So it wasn’t immediately after the ceremony at all. Get it straight.

To those of us who follow this horse race, we may either be biting our nails over this or dancing a little jig over it. But I would say for most Americans, today is just NFL kick-off Sunday, or 9/11, or a beautiful late summer day or something else entirely. Most people aren’t breathlessly panting over Hillary’s fainting spell.

I know it’s not scientific, but I just counted a whopping 4 items about Hillary’s fainting episode on my Facebook feed, and one of those was my cousin “liking” a Herman Cain post. It’s not even showing up in my top three FB trending topics. And I follow several local, national and political news organizations, so it’s not like my FB newsfeed is devoid of actual news. Most of the stuff is about football or remembering 9/11 or late-season baseball or Trump.

Everyone take a breath, relax and go watch some foosball like the normal red-blooded American heroes youse are.

The apartment must be even closer than the 9/11 Mosque or she’d have gone there, right?

She was so overcome with emotion she almost fainted. Did you almost faint today from emotion? Why do hate America?

It was 80 and humidity dropping from 79 to 54% between 9:00 and 10:00 at the Central Park weather station a couple of miles north of WTC. I live a couple of miles NNW of the WTC and was walking the dog around 9:00 and only felt slightly hot, and while I’m 10 yrs younger than she and in exceptional shape (just to be factual about it) I’m not as tolerant of heat/humidity as I used to be. And it wasn’t a problem for 1,000’s of other people at the ceremony either.

IOW I think you’re kidding yourself a bit here. This is a problem for her in a fairly close race, which it is whether or not it ‘should be’. It’s a real health incident which ‘mainstreams’ a story which previously just the core anti-Hillary/pro-Trump cared about. I watched TV this PM with some not very political but likely to vote type people and that video drew ‘OMG’s’.

The good news is she looked fine later. If not it would be really bad, but a very optimistic take from pro-Clinton POV to say it’s a not much of a story, IMO.

I disagree. Right now this is the biggest headline on cnn.com, Home - BBC News, and foxnews.com. This is a big news story no matter where you stand - left, right, or center.

Yes. Most Dopers are true believers when it comes to the Democratic party. They’ve already made up their minds. But this was Hilary’s 9-11.

President Trump. :frowning:

Only if he shuts his mouth. And then he would burst.

Everything we’ve seen WRT Hilary’s health issues is consistent with Parkinson’s disease.

I expect that specific medical information about her Parkinson’s will be leaked before the election.

She’s done.

mhendo thank you for the link on the Eisenhower article. I definitely want to learn more about how a modern Presidency dealt with a health crisis.

I think Hillary will still win and her fragile health could easily be a problem while in office. She could still serve but perhaps not put in 14 hour days. Maybe voluntarily restrict herself to a 8 hour day.

But with Trump as the alternative. We’re stuck with Hillary. Unless she totally collapses before the election.

Is there any chance that the Trump campaign has acquired some Polonium from one of Putin’s old KGB cronies? That would be a story.

Well, if you’re so inclined to go to one of those websites today, I suppose you’d see it as being big. My argument is that most people aren’t paying attention to this today. Your average American voter is often influenced by what they see in their facebook feeds or on TV. Today Facebook doesn’t seem to be overly concerned with it, and TVs are tuned to football.

Maybe tomorrow that will all change, but right now, the only people who are really sitting up and noticing are the ones who were already focused with laser-like precision on this election.

Are you withdrawing your unsubstantiated claim about Mamie’s involvement in Eisenhower’s presidency, or are you just going to pretend it never happened now that your claim has been shown to be completely without merit? I’m guessing the latter.

In all likelihood, it was dehydration and exhaustion that had more to do with campaigning every day from 6 a.m. until midnight, which she’s probably been doing for the past year almost daily. Hell I’d probably collapse and I’m in my early 40s. I’m not arguing that she actually is ill – she’s not. Nor do I think that this one incident by itself will topple her election hopes - it won’t. But taken together, the radical right wing - and I emphasize that plurality more than just Trump the man - is setting this all up to be a chaotic campaign crescendo. Moreover, I suspect that they are going to have help from foreign actors, including enemy nation states and rogue individuals and organizations with a vested interest in seeing instability in the United States. Assuming the right were to win the election, the alt-right and the Russians and Guccifer could well be done with each other within a matter or weeks or months, perhaps even turning into bitter enemies. But the damage would be done.
