Hit a cyclist. Brag about it in your tweet.

Why do you think a respected member of the community, and an active member of the Philadelphia Bicycle Coalition lied about this incident. I would like reasons from you.

What’s weird to me is that the cyclist “had not intended to report the incident, fearing that his girlfriend would be worried about him cycling in the future.”

In case it isn’t obvious to the OP, this is a problem here. The OP referenced something that no one else knew or remembered.

Looks like it’s not your lucky day. Beyond “It reeks of bullshit,” I got nothin’.

Got me?

Is it possible we could bîtch some more about the woman in the OP before we turn this thread on the author? There’s lots of ire to be directed her way first.

And on that note, I’m glad that a lot of criminals these days feel the need to unburden themselves on social media. Makes life so much easier for the rest of us when we need to know who to shun.

Oh, am I?

Police even ignore more serious cases, such as the incident in which cyclist Jay Williams was hit by a hit-and-run driver, even though witnesses provided police with the license plate number of the vehicle. Despite pleading from Williams and his attorney, the police took no interest in or action on that case.

I could go on. Sorry but you are wrong. When the police actually met with local cyclist groups they were shocked! Shocked I tell you! To find out that police officers were not taking reports.

No, I referenced a sadly all too typical attitude that police in the US have towards cyclists. Maybe I was too specific with the ‘ruin her day’ but I thought most people would get the basics.

The hell is “road tax” ?
I know, I shouldn’t be paying attention to the stupid rantings of a random British internet psycho. But still… WTH is “road tax” ?

You got nothing. Got it.

Well, that’s a t least a little better. Still know data, but a bunch of people saying “Everyone knows…” And at best, those sites say that “Some police are not filing reports”, while you make it seem to be ALL police.

And since you seem to think that this is a uniquely American phenomenon, have you bothered looking at any other countries?

Never said it was uniquely American. Cant really say about other countries as I haven’t really lived there or done geavy research ob the matter.

I’ve certainly never noticed that attitude and have no reason to think that the police in the US in that regard behave differently in other parts of the world.

I’m sure a proper Brit will be along shortly, but I suspect it’s a tax that you pay. For the roads. To maintain them. Possibly as part of keeping your car registered.

As to Ms. Emma Way, I applaud your one-woman campaign of stupidity. You serve as a shining example to other idiots, giving them a chance to see just how fucking dumb they could be if they really applied themselves.

I know that in the US many drivers consider gas taxes and car registration fees to be their “road tax”. England might have an actual road tax. Dunno. All I have ever heard is the London congestion fee and I only know of that from episodes of Top Gear. ; D

Correct on all counts.

It’s properly known as the Vehicle Excise Duty.

What is your experience in the matter?

Well now that Mr. Miskatonic has brought it to your attention and provided cites showing the existence of said attitude, do you still have no reason to believe that police in the US behave differently than police in other parts of the world? Or do you think that all police are disrespective towards bicycling accidents, regardless of country?

I like that the last lines are “Think before you tweet folks,” followed by, oh right, “And don’t drive away if you hit a cyclist.”

I don’t know where all this, “The cops do nothing to identified individuals who hit & run bicyclists/motorcyclists/lil’ol ladies” comes from. Yeah, I’m an insurance guy and not a cop but I have at least as good a chance of hearing about such incidents:

  1. Car does the hit & run
  2. Victim or witness gets the plate number
  3. Victim takes the plate to the police who evidently may or may not do anything
  4. Victim seeks compensation from the plate-owner directly for property damage & bodily injury
5 a) Driver pays out of pocket
5 b) Driver tells me about the demand, I investigate, I pay the claim
5 c) Driver tells victim to piss off, victim sues driver, driver tells me, I defend the suit and/or pay the claim.

In the 80+ collective years of vehicle claims experience on my team, nobody here can recall a case where the police refused to complete a report on a vehicle vs. pedestrian/bicycle/motorcycle. “Hit & run” or “stop and grovel” the incident is documented. And nobody can recall an insured getting sued out of the blue and there not being a corresponding police report of the incident. I dunno, maybe it’s an isolated problem. Persecuted outlaw riders are, in my experience, mythical. To be clear, I’m not saying there aren’t driver’s that would wilfully or carelessly smack things that go on two wheels and then get belligerent about it. They most certainly exist. But I don’t see how anyone with a shred of credibility and a functioning brain can claim they got hit and then screwed by the system.

As for the OP tweeter: HAHAHAHAHA! Dumbass!

I wish the coppers would quit telling the press, ‘they posted it on FB, or they tweeted!’ Criminals are stupid. Cops should just say, ‘we got a tip!’, and leave it at that. Is that so hard really? It seems to me the most reasonable thing, but maybe it’s just me.
