Hiya, stranger. Tell me a little about yourself...

Hi, I’m Nora. I’m 24 and I live in Chapel Hill, NC. I’m a full time grad student (English Renaissance lit) and TA (composition). I love what I study and most of the time I love teaching, but I’m also severely underpaid, in a long-distance relationship with a British guy, and increasingly fed up with my own compatriots. (Reading the gun control thread in GD really doesn’t help.)

So odds are I’ll be emigrating after I finish my doctorate, or perhaps sooner if I can’t take it any more. With this in mind, I’m trying to see as much of the world as I can during school breaks, so I can make an informed decision about where to settle. So far England and Spain are my top picks, but that may change if I make it to Australia and NZ next summer (my younger brother, who is a forestry student at VA Tech, is thinking about studying there). Did I mention I’m broke, staring down the barrel at PhD exams, and shouldn’t even be contemplating this? Oh, what the hell, life’s short and you only get one shot at it…

That basically sums up my philosophy of life, so I guess I’ve said enough.

Hey everyone. Mundanely, I’m known as Peter. I live in Austin, TX with my partner, Charles. We’re renting a house and enjoying our co-habitation and learning to live with each other.

I’m 41, 5’11" and 190lbs and wishing I was slimmer. I wear my hair (dark brown) long and sport a full beard/stache.

I work at the local IBM campus thru Manpower, where I’m on the Product Registration Tool team. I handle the front end of getting requests for it thru the system.

I graduated from Uni. of Wisc. Milwaukee back in '97 with a BA in Anthropology and a minor in comparative religion. I’m taking a bit of time off between that and grad school so I can get my life together, pay off some of my student loan bills and enjoy myself for a bit.

I’m a service brat (my father was in the Navy. He was an airdale) so I’ve lived all over the country. I find the upper midwest to be the best place to live. I was in the Navy for a couple years myself, as an engineman (snipe).

Any other question, feel free to drop a line.

Howdy. I’m Rob, but my local gang of friends have nicknamed me “Oswald”. I’m a 23yr old Air Force Civil Engineer, and I’m currently in North Dakota. I’m 5’6", 165lb, blond hair, blue eyes. Pictures are avail on my website.

I grew up in North Jersey, and went to college in Prescott AZ. How I ended up in the arctic, I don’t know. I like the outdoors a lot. I’m more into movies than TV, and the classic stuff is more often better than a lot of the crap coming out lately. I like my beer, but have cut back a lot in the past few months. Smoke? No. Dance? If you want to call it that, well okay. People claim I have a good karaoke voice, but I don’t think I do. I like hockey and try to play when (and as best) I can.

In any case, Tripler came from a MUD where someone named me after a Doonesbury character. Seems to fit though . . . I am a regular lurker/sometimes newbie poster.

Hey there, Bottle of Smoke. My name really is Audrey. I’m 23, and I live about 20 miles west of Honolulu. No hubby, no kids, no pets. I got my B.A. in psychology last December from the University of Hawaii-Manoa; I now spend my time tutoring Psych 100 classes and working as a research slave for the coolest professor in the world. I love baseball and listening to music. Exciting, huh?

Hey there, Bottle of Smoke. I’m Jenn.

Background: Born and raised in farm country in upstate New York, near the Massachusetts border. Such farm country, actually, that our property borders woods on three sides and a cornfield on the fourth, and there’s a wandering cow in my front yard right now.

Physically: Three months shy of 18 years old, though most people who meet me assume I’m at least 20. I don’t know why. 5’7 1/2, 130lb, short dark-blonde hair (just down to the bottoms of my ears), blue eyes. Tend towards cowgirl/hippy clothing, if that helps the mental image.

Nonphysically: I play guitar (the one I own is acoustic, but also enjoy playing electric) and keyboards, and I’m teaching myself fiddle. I listen to a lot of different kinds of music: country, y’alternative, alt-rock, heavy metal, classic rock, pop, that metal-rock hybrid stuff like Kid Rock and Papa Roach… I especially like alt-country, though. I’m a big racing nut. (Thus the name – racin chikki.) I write short stories.

Education: Currently a senior in high school. Next year I should be attending Mississippi State University, unless some miracle allows me to attend UNC Charlotte. I got a 1520 on my SAT, so I MIGHT find a miracle… I’m going to major in some form of English/Communications stuff, because languages come naturally to me. I’m thinking either journalism/pr or pr/marketing. After college, I’m determined to get a job behind the scenes in auto racing.

Family: Live with parents and two foster kids, age 3 and 4. Older sister (24) is a bartender in New Orleans. I’m single.

Bottle of Smoke, I wondered what happened to Denbo and who you were, coming out of the blue, but never put the two together. Thanks for clearing those little mysteries for me.

I’m brachy (Lisa), catcher of birds. Apart from avian studies, I do a little bit of computering for the Entomology department (or, as I affectionately call it “The Department of Bird Food”).

Howdy. I’m Ruffian, formerly known as LauraRae in the AOL SDMB days. I changed my screenname in December last year, partially in reference to a favorite (though doomed) racehorse, and partially because the name itself endeared itself to me.

My real name is (duh) Laura. I am 27, 5’7", long dark hair, dark eyes, and fair skin, toe ring, triple-pierced ears, and the occasional Henna tattoo. I am a 5th teacher, specializing in students who are new to the language and are developing skills, and absolutely adore what I do. Sure, some days I want to scream (and some days I do scream), but I love teaching learning, and I love the students. I also like to think I’m a writer, and I suppose I am. Publication is infrequent, but it does happen.

I’m engaged to DeathLlama–it only took 2 1/2 years for me to lure him onto the SDMB! He’s a musician and junior high music teacher, my best friend of over 5 years, my boyfriend of over three…we’ll be getting married on April 7th.

I also had spaghetti with a jalapeno sauce tonight that is currently starting to rip through my gut. Oooohh…

Hello, Bottle of Smoke. I’m Kristen. I’m 18 and just starting my freshmen year at Dartmouth. I’m from southern Delaware. I have two hermit crabs. My girlfriend of a year and a half is quietgirldownthehall, who I guarentee you will never see post.

I’m a half deaf musician and a gay Christian. I enjoy contradiction in my life. I’m a journalist/playwright by trade. Or at least that’s what I hope to eventually be. I’m well on my way, I guess. I also like politics and theater.

I’m 5’3 with extremely curly brownred hair, green eyes, and glasses. I don’t drink, so I’ll just have a Diet Coke.

I’m one of those adjective people. You know, the one in a circle of friends whose actions are often described as “that’s so Kristen!” and everyone understands. I’m not sure what to think about this.

<handshake> Nice to meet you.

My name is Jay, better known as Jaybird or the Birdman and sometimes the Dirty Bird. I’m 26 years old, 5’10", 175lbs, brown hair cut by a veg-o-matic, and hazel eyes that occasionally earn me compliments from women even more color blind than I. I’m originally from Philly but now live just outside Baltimore. I’m a musician and a proud Irish drunk as well as an enthusiastic amateur bartender. As such, it is totally impossible to blackmail me. I make my “living” as a underpaid peon at a car dealership. Future ambitions include world domination.

Hi, I’m Kyla. Clearly. Anyway, I’m 22 and I live in the SF Bay Area. I have a degree in Anthropology with a focus in Religious Studies (my school had no RS department, so a focus is the best I could do). I spent my third year of college studying at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and mention it all the time.

Presently, I work in a bookstore, and fret about what I’m going to do with my life. I’m leaning toward the life of a vagabond traveller.

Everyone else seems to be posting their appearance…I’m 5’5" and have blue eyes and dark blond hair, from my mom’s (Irish) side of the family. I bear little resemblance to my dad’s (Russian Jewish) side of the family.

Hello, Im Jabe, also known as JB Leodux. I just moved to Burlington, vt from Swanton, vt. I am 19 years old and work at IBM. My interests are music and politics. I am quite knowlegable(sp?) about both, but I do not have the way with words that most of you other posters seem to have. My friends call me a hippy, although I do not dress like one. I guess it is because I despise MOST new music. I would rather listen to The Grateful Dead, or Santana before Matchbox 20 or Green Day. I do like Phish, and have seen them 13 times. Sunday some friends and I are going to see Phil Lesh and Friends. I am pretty excited. Well, see y’all.

Well, I do remember Denbo but I had no idea that you two were one and the same. Learn somethin’ new everyday!

Me I am Beth, obviously. I am (almost) 26 years old. I am short, round and usually on the not-so-bad side of bitchy. I have naturally unruly, reddish brown hair that I have colored dark brown at the moment. I have hazel-green eyes, very pink cheeks and what many have described as kissable lips. (Hey, I have to have at least one redeeming physical attribute!)

Education I attend college part time for what I hope will be only a couple more semesters. I am majoring in English with minors in criminal justice and film. What do I hope to accomplish by this? Actually, at the moment my career ambition involves having about 3-4 kids, raising and home-schooling them and then eventually having lots of grandchildren. This wasn’t my intention when I set out but what can I say–my priorities have shifted in the past few years. While this is not quite the “world-domination” ambition that my mother hoped, it is what I want to do.

Religion I am a former Solitary practitioner of Wicca. I say “former” because I and some others are currently in the process of setting up our own coven. This does not go over well here in the Bible Belt but hey, every life has some adversity!

Family I am married to my best friend in the world and have been for the past three years. We have no kids but are working on it. Daily. We do have a dog, a two-year old Labrador/chow mix named, Hasek, after our favorite NHL goalie–The Dominator! She is afraid of anything that moves (grasshoppers, butterflies, ants, etc) and she will eat anything–socks included.

LocationI live outside of Johnson City, Tennessee. This is a town that I can only describe as being NASCAR chic. The town claims to want culture (and it actually thinks it has it) but it refuses to dress or pay for it. I work third shift at a hospital there in the PBX department. This basically means I answer all incoming phone calls and tell people that, no, they cannot be rung into a patient’s room at 3am. I also monitor the alarm systems, the security transmissions, organize the list of on-call physicians and generally act as the Shell answer (wo)man for the entire hospital. I post on the SD almost solely from work as my job is mostly that of a bored, yet ornery watchdog and I am not allowed to leave my little hole-in-the-wall office.

Interests I enjoy NHL hockey. I despise football with a passion I cannot even begin to describe. I have a strange habit of beginning bizarre Martha Stewart-like craft projects and then abandoning them half-way through. I love to cook and I love to eat. I don’t smoke and I drink socially. The only liquors I can drink are vodka and tequila–everything else makes me ill. My favorite beer is Moosehead but that’s also about as exotic as I get when it comes to beer. I have a rather large movie collection on VHS and DVD. My house is decorated in a theme of film/occult. I know that seems weird but hey, it’s me.

This is quite possibly my longest thread ever on the board but I guess that’s because it is about my favorite subject!

Now, I want to hear the Billy Joel story.

Hello, my name is Lisa. I am 32, married, 1 kid,1 dog & 2 cats. I do (in)Human Resources for the company that makes Hunter ceiling fans. I went to Penn State (WE ARE…)for 2 years until I a) ran out of money and b) was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. So far, I’ve been pretty lucky, the only sypmtoms of MS I’m suffering right now are blurred vision, some numbness in my hands and feet and a burning need to use a lot of,commas,.
I used to be a Dodger fan, now it’s all about the Angels. (guess the connection, win $100). There you go.

well, what can I tell you that you all dont already know?

My name is John and I’m 21 from Ireland. I play Bass in a band called I Am spartacus, I’m seriously into my music. I fix computers for a living. I’m single. I love soccer and professional wrestling.

I got my username from a wrestling move. please dont judge me
what else can I say?

BOS, I knew it was a pogues song when I saw the name!

Hey Bottle of Smoke. What a great way to get the members going.

I’m Nate. 33 year old Virginia guy. Originally from Chicago my hippy mom dragged me from Chicago to Boston to Miami to LA to Chicago to LA to Washington DC before I was 13. I settled here after going to school at Frostburg State University. Been here (except for one year at Iowa City for grad school) ever since.

Been married to the lovely and talented Mrs Chance for 7+ years now. We’ve been together since we were 19 when I dumped her roommate freshman year to date her. So that’s 14+ years together now. whew!

Just this year we had the Chancling. Pictures are available at http://www.wooleysark.com/kate. All praise for how cute she is will be glowingly accepted. Flame her and vengeance will be mine.

Like a lot of us I’m in publishing. I’m currently Director of Marketing for a trade pub house in Vienna, VA. In the past I’ve been a circulation guy and network admin and webmaster. It pays to broaden your skill set…let me tell you.

Also a musician (half-assed) and party thrower. Role play when time allows and enjoy living up in the Blue Ridge mountains near the West Virginia line.

Thanks again!

Good morning, all. This place is nice and comfy. Mind if I take off my shoes? No thanks - a little early for a beer. But a bloody mary would hit the spot.

I probably put too much in my profile to add significantly here. I live one suburb over from dropzone. I’m a lazy lawyer for a huge (the hugest?) bureaucracy. 39, soon to be 40. 6’3", 195#, trying unsuccessfully to put on another 5-10#.

The main thing I’ve been working on the last 6-12 months or so is trying to be happy/ier. It is really stupid to realize you make a good buck, live in a lovely home, have a beautiful intelligent wife, 3 wonderful kids, and walk around feeling pissed off all the time. I’m doing better on that, but it shouldn’t have to be so much work! (You guys have been a great help.) And I’ll have to stop at one, dears, cause I’m trying to cut down on my ETOH intake which was at shocking proportions in years past.

It is a beautiful morning in Chicago. My office is on the top floor of a 30 story building with a view of Lake Michigan. The sun is shining brilliantly on the lake, with bunches of white fluffy clouds over the lake. The clouds were so heavy, and started right at the lake, that this a.m. on the train in from the west it looked like there was a shining white mountain range behind the loop buildings. And Venus was really bright this morning, wasn’t it?

Two days left in the fiscal year and I’m sitting pretty. Should I screw up and do anything productive today or tomorrow, I’ll hold onto it until next week to credit it to the new FY. Gotta love it!

Well, maybe just one more if you insist. Got a dart board around here? Glad I thought to bring my dog. Everyone meet Daisy.

Hey, BoS. Nice thread. I’m signing in from Nebraska. We’ve got a beautiful morning here today–the very model of an autumn day.

Let’s see, what’s interesting about me? ugh. That’s depressing. I can’t think of anything. I’m married to a Husker fan (read: football widow), have three evil children whom I love dearly, two creatures posing as cats (who claw all my furniture to shreds and eat anything small enough to get into their mouths). I was a stay-home mom for a long time before going back and getting my degree. If I could do anything in the world, I guess I’d just go to school full-time. I loved it.
I am trying to learn to play the guitar–my calluses are developing nicely, thank you. I still sound like I’m beating a cat against a carpet, but I am eternally optimistic.
I’m very excited about Halloween. It’s my favorite holiday and I’ve promised my daughter that I will go as Mortia if she’ll go as Wednesday. My eleven year old wants me to rig his bag on a wire connected to my daughter’s bag so he can stay at home and just tell everyone he went as the invisible man. Smart ass. This is what I live with.
I love my VH1 Classic, all my old movie channels (Harvey was on last night. One of my favorites) and Noggin, because I can watch all the shows I watched when I was a kid. I’m currently reading ‘The Westmores of Hollywood’ and enjoying it greatly.
For general information, we have electricity, running water, all the ‘modern comferts’ and do not fight with Native Americans on horseback. Most people do not even own over-alls and I haven’t seen anyone with a blade of grass sticking out of their mouth in…oh at least hours. Yes, it is very slow and quiet here. Yes, that can possibly be translated into boring. So I’m always excited to hear about you and how things are where you live. Sorry I rambled.

Wow. This little get-together is getting big. I came in to work this morning expecting to see this thread residing somewhere on page 4 (like most threads I start;)), and lo and behold it’s still kickin.’

Howdy everybody, gald you could make it. Just a couple responses:

evilbeth and brachyrhynchos – I’m frankly stunned that anyone remembers Denbo. I didn’t think that (A) I had posted under that name for long and (B) anything I had posted was worth remembering;)

And hey Mr. C – any sledgehammer wielding ass pounders will be politely asked by the bouncers to leave. I’m runnin’ a clean establishment here, and I don’t need any trouble with the cops, ya catch my drift?

Hey everybody - andygirl’s got crabs!
Ruffian - Congrats on the impending nuptuals. About that jalapeno spaghetti - how’d everything come out?
Duke - you “bowl off-spin”? Come again?
LouisB - I have pictures. How much are they worth to you?
racinchikki - anyone seen my Elsie? I was supposed to take her to the moo-vies.
Let’s see. Lives in upstate NY. Wants to go to school in Miss or NC. What’s wrong with this picture?
JC - I’m sure the Chanceling is beautiful, but the link didn’t do it for me.
Struuter - Go Big Red!

It’s obvious somebody didn’t see part 3 of the SMOKE OUT (3rd and 4th posts). You also seem to have missed page 3 of Who Would You Most Like to Meet, towards the bottom of that page.

Most importantly, you completely glanced over Crunchy Frog Explained.
