Hiya, stranger. Tell me a little about yourself...

Hey crunchy, got any Lark’s Vomit?

Mornin’ Bottle of Smoke! I must say, I’m quite impressed with the quiet strength of this thread… and also with the revolution you fomented over in Limericks. Quite the party game, eh?

Hey Rasa, where are you from in RI? That’s my home state, too. (Providence) You still live there?

Sorry, Dinsy, fresh out of Lark’s Vomit, but there’s a whole box of Anthrax Ripple over here if you’re interested.

Hello, all. I’m Lee. Land use planner by profession (hence the name). 36 y.o., male. Born and bred and living in Virginia. Separated from my wife, 2 year old daughter. Work for the government. Don’t have a computer anymore (lost it a custody fight, ha ha), so I post at work. I’ve followed SD since 1985 when I first started reading it in the Washington D. C. edition of The City Paper. Good to meet you all.

Hey, there. James from Oklahoma City checking in. My nickname refers to a cartoon mouse and my quixotic hope that I’ll be able to see more of him. I’ve been posting since July of 1999 (I think) and have fallen on and off the web several times since, including one start from scratch with this nickname. I generally have little to say so my post count is low, just about to reach 100 after several months. I browse mostly, and was able to help answer a general question once.

I’m 25 now. My job is clerical and bland. I have no significant other, have never been on a date, in fact. I’m overeducated and haven’t been able to apply it yet. I like to cook and read and watch cartoons and crack wise. Have a bird. Would like to move someplace better than here. Not fascinating, I know, but it could be worse.

Nice board, huh?

Like Bottle of Smoke, I do all my posting from work, which is at a (top secret) advertising agency in New York City. I earn my kibbles & bits as an executive assistant. I can basically do my job in a coma (believe me, it’s not that hard) but reading the SDMD keeps me sane.

A native Coloradoan, I’ve lived in NY since ‘84. I’ll be 39 the end of December, stand 5’9’’ tall with light brown hair and hazel eyes. I’ve been accused of being flippant, irreverent and a general all around smart ass. I try not to take too much seriously, especially not myself.

Mr. M is a professional chef, so it’s a miracle that I’m not as pudgy as I could be. He is also Algerian - my screen name is his home town in Algeria. Real name Lisa - I never cared for it much - it smacks of the 60’s in such a big way.

We’ve been married almost four years - no kids and no plans to have any - we would love to have a Doberman puppy but Cruella de Landlady doesn’t allow them in our apartment bldg.

I’m a voracious reader, especially of history, and love nightlife (and beer!), movies, and travel. I speak semi-fluent French, and have a moronic schoolchild’s grasp of Arabic (an extremely difficult language to learn).

It’s been really interesting reading about all of you!

[slight hijack, but, because it was asked for…]

“Off-spin bowling”: “bowling” in cricket is analogous to “pitching” in baseball. There are different types of bowlers, which mostly match types of pitchers: “fast bowlers” (obvious), and “swing bowlers” (like curveball pitchers). “Off-spin,” however, relies on the ball bouncing before it reaches the batsman. An off-spin delivery, when it hits the ground, turns to the right, in towards a right-handed batsman.

You can read all about off-spin bowling at:

I was given my handle - Filthy Phil - in 1959 by a motorcycle club. I’m 61 years old, disabled (service connected), but still ride when I can ('46 HD, U model). I had to quit work a year ago. Currently, I’m doing a little fishing and some herptoculture. I have two daughters and three grandkids. I’m planning to go to comunity college and get some school-housing soon. Old dog gonna try to learn new tricks. And that’s about it.

Hi, there are many reasons for my name but the simplest is: “It’s Spanish for star.” And while it’s not my given name, alot of my pals call me Estrella in RL. (Though they tend to mispronounce it.)

I was originally lurking but after seeing the English majors chatting, I had to pop in. English Major, concentration in Modernism (read: Joyce for four years) from the University of Pennslyvania.

Born in El Salvador, yes, I’m Latina. Fluent in Spanish. Raised in Los Angeles. Fluent in Valley-speak, Spanglish and Surfer-speak.
Attended UPenn in Philadelphia, never left after graduation 2 years ago.

Live with a messy but loving boyfriend. I’m a lindyhopper, an office grunt, and a tireless Net junkie. Occasionally freelance for a few magazines.

I’m addicted to the Sims, eBay and Bebe. Been told I look like Jennifer Tilly and/or Phoebe Cates. I like pina coladas and long walks on the beach…

Um, then I might have passed it while biking. I live in Vienna, VA. In case I hadn’t said it 10 times before:)

Maybe you have. We’re on Boone at the intersection of 123 and 7. Stop on by sometime.

It’s true. Every word of it.

When in lurker mode, I pick and choose the threads I’ll read based on the subject line. “SMOKE OUT” invoked no interest whatsoever, I got bored with “Who Would You Most Like to Meet” after the first couple of pages, and “Crunchy Frog Explained” could have been just about anything so I persued more mundane and pointless threads, like “limericks”.

Sorry bud. Now that I’ve been enlightened, I’ll do better.

That goes for you too, Bottle of Smoke. I’m on my way to “limericks” right now.

Wow, Bottle, you sure brought a lot of people out of the woodwork. Thanks - I learned about a lot of dopers here!

Ooh, I like redheads… Don’t tell Missus Coder though, OK? Thanks. And I used to play accordion as a kid. Mama Coder thought we should all learn to play music, and she knew an accordion teacher, so…

I’m 44, married to Missus Coder for 16 years and 6 days, and we have one son, Ralf. Jr. My real name is Tony, and I’m a systems analyst for Michigan State University. I’d like to change the title on my business cards to read “Cybernetic Entomologist”, but I don’t think the U would go for it, even though that’s closer to the truth.

Hobbies include a fascination with airplanes and flying, and scuba diving, but I don’t get to dive much right now. Ralf. Jr. is almost old enough to learn to dive, though, and then we’ll be out and about more (I hope!!) I’m also a den mother for Jr’s cub scout pack, and used to be the cubmaster. He’s almost ready to cross over to the Boy Scouts (the big time!) so I will probably be some sort of adult volunteer/leader there, too.

And we have two 10 week old fuzzball cats, named Frisky and Abby. They have 3 working brain cells between them, but make up for it by charging around the house at all hours, and fearlessly attacking anything that moves or might be convinced to move, if only they swat at it long enough.

Hey Vix:

Yep, I’m from Cumberland, home of the Farrely Brothers. (And no, that was NOT the real Cumberland High School in “Something About Mary”!) Lived in RI my whole life more or less, minus my years at college. Fine lil’ state!

Medea’s Child: Whenever I see your name the chorus of Medea goes through my head… “Jason oh Jason… you do not know the sum of your sorrooooooowwwwws…” Too funny!

It’s been said before, but I’ll say it again - great post BoS!

I’m Chris, and I’ve been a Dope Addict for 10 years now. Been skulking around this joint for almost a year before diving into the post pool. I know many of you from reading, so it’s great to get some more background. Me? I’m 36, 5’11’’, 175 lbs, Lt Brown hair that’s not really short but not long either (not anymore, anyway). And I have blue blue eyes (as I am told).

Mrs. Wolf and I are child-free and loving it (we earned the money, we’ll spend it). Well, we do have fur kids - 2 dogs, Grizzly and Duke, and 2 cats, Chili and Rocky. All of them are rescues (we love animals). Oh, and Smacky the Fish (he is the loudest fish I’ve heard - he smacks the water when he’s hungry). We had our house built 5 years ago in a new sub-division that used to be forest. We felt kind of bad, so we kept as many trees as possible and help support the local bird population. We kept 1/3 of an acre as untouched forest. If I have any questions, I now know I can ask Odieman and screech-owl!

Speaking of screech-owl (space nut), we live outside of Huntsville, AL about 20 mins south of TN. Huntsville is home of NASA and many high tech companies (Alabama - who knew?). We both spent the first 30 years of our lives in NYC - yes, I know, quite a change. (Many people here are still afraid that if they make us mad we will stab them in the kidney.) How we wound up here is my wife’s fault, er, story - it’s actually a nice, Oprah type tale.

I work for a library automation company here in Huntsville as a unix administrator/consultant. It’s a real laid-back place, and I can check out the SDMB, even though my network connection blows big time (uh, if this is monitored, I love my job  )

I am a major Dead Head, hence the name Dire Wolf, and I’ve even been to a few shows (over 150). My simple mind is both easily amused and easily distracted, and, uh, what was I saying?..oh yeah, I enjoy fixing just about anything, like hiking, LOVE baseball (Yankees) and football (Jets), and of course, posting to this board and cyber-hanging with all of you GREAT people! (alright, maybe I’m a little long-winded too, what can I say?)

Hi, Bottle! My name is Robin. I’m a 41 year old female native Houstonian. Married with one 16 year old son. I’m a mechanical designer in the oil industry. I work with 3d modeling software. I only post from work, as the computer at home is the domain of my husband, LOL! I am a bowler with a 200 average last year (woo-hoo!), but I am struggling a little this year. I am also a compulsive reader, and my favorite author is Stephen King, as you might be able to tell from my user name (a character from the novel of the same name). I like to cook, but I’m no gourmet. We all like to watch WWF wrestling, and my favorite is The Rock, with Stone Cold a close second. We have a sheltie dog named Blaze, and we are not into cats.

Nice to meetcha!

Hello to everybody else who posted this afternoon. It’s great to pop back in here and read all about you guys. Quite the eclectic group we’ve got (although we seem to be infested with English majors…who’d a thunk?).

Hey Dire Wolf – I’ve seen your name around and was wondering if you were a Dead Head. It may be a coincidence, but…last night I sat down to my supper ('twas a bottle of red whiskey). I said my prayers and went to bed, and that’s the last they saw of me.

Wow, I didn’t expect to find anyone else here from BC. I graduated from there a year ago. I always have to explain to people that Boston College is an actual university.
Oh, and just about everyone I knew who was pre-med as a freshman transferred into something else.

Glad to meet everyone! I’m relatively new to the board (about 2 weeks!) so this is really cool. I doubt I’ll remember all the details but it was fun reading. Here’s my shot:

Real name is Barb. My username comes from a childhood nickname my sister used to call me, instead of “Barbie” which I hate (unless my mommy says it!). My parents and sister came to the US from Czechoslovakia in August, 1969. I was born in 1971, so I’m the first generation American in my family. I used to speak fluent Czech, but have slacked off some since I haven’t lived at home for 10+ years. I can understand it it fine, I just sometimes have a hard time responding how I want to!

I’m 29, currently live in Rochester, NY (been here 6 and a half years). I have a boyfriend, we’ve been together on/off for about 4 years. (Hopefully it will stick this time!) I have two “kids”, a 7 year old cat named Diga, and his 9 week old sister kitten, Pekoe. I just bought my first house about 2 months ago and have since spent all of my life’s saving furnishing the place! But I love it! I’ve lived in Boston (8 months) and Tampa (2 years) before moving back to NY (home state). Used to work at a recording studio in the early 90’s and also for a concert promotor. Met all sorts of interesting people, for sure! Now work at Oracle, on the consulting side, as a Financial Analyst. I have a passion for travel, reading and am an amateur writer (in the midst of writing my own soap opera, but I could make it into a play if necessary).

In the summer I play softball, in the winter and spring I play indoor sand volleyball. I’m just over 6 feet tall, don’t know my weight but I’m curvy in the all right places, have blue eyes and shoulder length dark brown curly/wavy hair. (getting it colored next week for a change). When I was 11 years old I had open-heart surgery to fix a whole in my heart. The surgeon screwed up, had to have another surgery when I was 16. So I have a not too attractive scar running down the middle of my ample bosoms. But for the most part I forget about it, thanks to my very supportive boyfriend.

I’m sure there’s more, but its time to go home. Glad to be a part of this eclectic group!

Na schledanou!
Barb (aka Voorvie)

Hooray! Another Eagle! I know what you mean about explaining it to people. I think half of my parents’ friends are still under the impression that I go to BU. So, Starbury, are you going to share anything else about yourself?

Jessica, who now has “For Boston” running through her head. Damn.
