Holy Crap! Just finished watching AOTC. Dont open if you havent seen yet..SPOILERS

Aww, c’mon!! Just go to the afternoon matinee and you won’t be out more than 4 bucks (as long as you don’t buy any popcorn!) It’s definitely worth it!!

mebuckner, i’m starting to wonder…

blue and green: light side, apprentice and knight.
red: dark side
purple: a foot in both camps… red and blue = purple…

perhaps there is more to master windu than meets the eye.

oops.
Again.

…by whatever horrible ACCIDENT befalls him, I meant, not “accent”.

Well that does it. No more typing in my sleep.

I immediately said out loud, much to the amusement of many nearby movies viewers.

[yoda voice]

So punk, feel lucky, do you?

[/yoda voice]

The whole movie was worth that scene, I also liked how they portrayed him as very comfortable with field command.

LOL!! I thought the exact same thing! I’m also annoyed by the preview of Minority Report that shows Tom Cruise leaping between the moving platforms - total future video game.

As far as the movie goes…

  • Loved the special effects
  • Loved Obi Wan, yummy yummy Ewan
  • Loved the theme…loved how Leia’s theme was played when Amidala was on screen
  • Loved the big jedi light sabre arena fight, especially the female jedi
  • Hated the dialogue
  • Especially hated Yoda’s dialogue
  • Hated the love stuff
  • Hated how “neatly” Amidala’s shirt got ripped to show off her abs to perfection
  • The plot…just kinda lame, tell me again, why was Amidala’s vote so darned special? why did the Jedi send nearly all their number to rescue a couple of people and reduce their already small numbers to what, 10?

Amidala’s vote was special because she was one of the few people who was against the military creation act. We get the impression that she is a very persuasive member of the Senate. Furthermore, we see (by the overwhelming support that the emergency powers proposal recieves) that voices expressing sentiment like Amidala’s were severely underrepresented.

You almost answer your second question yourself. They don’t. Why would you think that they did? Just because they didn’t show any Jedi who stayed behind doesn’t mean that there weren’t any. On the other hand, they did have to send a sizable contingent, because they guessed (quite rightly) that they were up against a sizable threat.

I saw the movie again Friday night. A couple extra things I noticed this time:
[ul][li]The Imperial March music at the end (when the Clonetroopers are marching into the ships) is accompanied by a bit of Darth Vader heavy breathing.[/li][li]A glimpse of red-robed figures behind Palpatine and his cronies as they watch from a balcony. They looked like those cool red Imperial Guards in the the original trilogy.[/li]When Anakin and Padme eat with Anakin’s new step-family, they sit at what appears to be the same table as used by Luke and his family in ANH. I think the same camera shot is used - it looks from the head of the table out into the courtyard. Nice touch.[/ul]A question: when Yoda and Dooku were fighting, I thought I caught a reference to Yoda training Dooku. (It was hard to keep track of the dialogue, the visuals of this scene being so exciting.) Was Dooku Yoda’s apprentice?

I’m not just upset over Phantom Menace, I also hated the 3rd movie, the one with the savage teddy bears.

Star wars was fun, Empire was pretty cool but after that forget it. It all went downhill and he started adding tribal Care Bears and Jar Jar.

Like I said, I’m in no rush to see another film by George anytime soon.

Actually, they speak quite eloquently. But it gets all hashed in the Galactic Standard to English translation devices installed in all THX-Certified theaters.

Yoda trained Dooku and Dooku trained Obi-Wan.

Ah, thanks. I thought that was the gist of what they said.

Worst. Romance. Ever.

Seriously, Anakin shows up, starts in with the whole creepy-stalker “I’ve loved you from the moment we met” garbage. They have one fun picnic/rolling in wildflowers scene. He confesses to killing women and children. Then Padme falls in love with him. Huh???

[cheesy mocking voices]
“Padme, I killed an entire village, women and children too”
“That’s ok, it’s no big deal, let’s get hitched.”

I would say that mom’s death scene was straight out of high school plays, but that would be an insult to high school actors. Let me squeak out an “I love you” then throw my head back dramatically in death, apparently from a cut on the cheek. I’m surprised Lucas didn’t have her stick her tongue out the side of her mouth, or superimpose X’s over her eyes. I’m sure I heard audience members stifling laughter at Anakin’s show of “emotion”. Ask two first year Drama students to ad-lib a death scene and you’ll get something far superior.

Honestly, compare that scene with Luke finding out about Vader being his father.

BTW, why did Anakin leave his mother a slave on Tattoine? I’m just going to pretend that he bought her out of slavery 7 years ago, and she decided to live there as a free person. Then she fell in love with Cliegg Lars and went to live with him and his son Owen. When Anakin felt she was in trouble, he went straight to Cliegg’s house since he’s been keeping tabs on his mother. Now all I have to do is fast forward through the Watto scene, and all is well with the world. At least, Anakin wouldn’t be just a complete bastard of a son, abandoning his mom to slavery, and not even sending her a letter once in a while.

Overall, it was worth watching, the good scenes are good, but the bad scenes are just atrocious.

Go Yoda!

sturmhauke and Narrad, Dooku did not train Obi-Wan. The two had never met before that one scene where Obi’s suspended in the restraining field. Dooku trained Qui-Gon, and Qui-Gon trained Obi-Wan.

I won’t bother with /spoiler/-tags this far in the thread. So much have been analysed already, that I only want to add a few observations of my own:

Royalty

So Padmé Amidala is Queen, but only elected. Yet her daughter, Leia, is a Princess, and presumably know who her mother is (see below). How can a royal title be hereditary when it’s actually a title for an office? Lucas wants to hail democracy, and thus works his way around this by electing the royalty (much as the Roman Senate elected a Dictator – which also works to explain Palpatine).
So where does Leia’s title come from?
In Ep. V+IV her title doesn’t seem to count for much, though.

Separated at birth

So Leia’s adoptive father is Jimmy Smits. In RoTJ, when Luke asks her what she remembers of her mother, she claims to have vague recollections of emotions and images, but nothing more substantial. This indicates that her mother – Padmé? – died when she was about 3-4 y.o. So will Padmé go off to live with Jimmy Smits for those years, after giving away Luke? All this seems highly improbable.
Another point is from ANH: “Help me Obi Wan.You’re my only hope.” The famous line that kicks everything in motion. Leia says: *“You fought with my father in the clone wars.” * Yes, Yoda says that * “the war has just begun.” * But what father is she referring to? Does she know Anakin to be her father, but not to be Darth Vader? Doesn’t seem likely, since the name Skywalker is such a give-away. Will Jimmy Smits then fight in the clone wars in the next movie?
[Yoda voice]Major Plot Hole. This is.[/Yoda voice]

**Nice Cut Off. **

Nobody so far seems to have picked up how Padme cuts Jar Jar short when she leaves her office to him: * “Yes, I’m sure you have a lot of things to see to.” * Hesitant reply: * “Uhhh? Okey-dokey…” *

Siths

I haven’t read the books, but I got the impression, that Siths are another, older, from faraway race. In TPM we got Darth Sideous and Darth Maul. Yet, Dooku is a count, in his public persona. However, the Jedi lore, would not let a member of the order retain a title of nobility. Did I miss something? Did the Emperor/Sideous/Palpatine call Dart Tyranous in the end scene? Isn’t Dooku the twin Sith? Doesn’t he get the honorary “Darth” because he’s not a Stih?
And if they are another race, why does Anakin become Darth Vader? Is it just a title, like Baron or Duke?

CGI

It still looks fuzzy, when superimposed on live action. The close-ups of Yoda didn’t work for me. I know it sounds stupid to compare a 2 foot green foam rubber goblin, with a CG version and say that the foam rubber looks more real, but it does.

Did anyone find this movie rather violent for a PG? What with decapitations and maimings and all?

Leia’s title comes from her parents. She’s the (adopted) daughter of the King and Queen of Alderaan. (Jimmy Smits, and a woman to be named later).

According to the expanded universe, the Sith are both another race, and a religious order. What happened is that, a long time ago, some dark Jedi, fleeing persecution, went to the other side of the galaxy, where they ran into this alien species called the Sith, who worshiped them as gods. So, the dark jedi became known as the Lords of the Sith. So, Palpatine, Dooku, Vader, etc. are called Sith, even though they’re human, and Darth Maul is called Sith, even though he’s whatever. because that’s just how the dark jedi are known. Darth is just an honorary title. Darth Tyrannus is Count Dooku, just like Anakin Skywalker is Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine is Darth Sideous, etc.

Much better than Phantom Menace this is.

Most of What I wanted to say has already been said, but a couple of things.
I didn’t think that Darth Sidious looked any older than Palpatine, just some dramatic lighting accentuated the wrinkles.

I did read that Ian McDarmid did wear make up to make plapatine look 10 years older in this movie.

AoTC could have really done without C3P0 in the battle scenes, as another poster said he almost became the Jar Jar or AoTC.

The dialogs was awful . . . .as were the love scenes.

But some parts of the Movie - Wow! I think the good parts are good enough for me to justify seeing the movie again.

I thought that the CGI Yoda worked well, you could see what he was feeling - the effort of using the force, I’m glad yoda had a larger part in this.

I have a lot more to say but it would only be reiterating other posters. After I have seen the film a second time I will post again.

The other two are:

The scene where Obi-Wan and Anakin were chasing Zam Wessel through the city

The scene where Obi-Wan was chasing Jango through the asteroids.

It’s my understanding (based somewhat on the books, but I don’t think there’s anything in the films that contradicts it) is that Princess Leia is Princess of Alderaan because her father is of the royal house of that planet. Not her real father (Darth Vader) but her adoptive father. In ANH, at least, she doesn’t know (or express any knowledge of) being adopted. So for all intents and purposes here, she views her Alderaan family as her “real” family because they raised her and loved her and all that smarmy stuff. Alderaan is a democracy, she is an elected senator. Her family has long been active in democratic politics, even though their roots are monarchial. Let’s say England decided to eliminate even the official ceremonial role of their royal family. We still might call Prince William “Prince” because it is historic and part of the traditional and culture of England, even though he has no actual job. If he likes politics, he might run for Prime Minister, and if he wins, we might still call him Prince William, even though he’s holding elected office. Leia is Princess Leia because she is adopted by historically royal people, who coincidentally hold elected office. Luke is not called Prince Luke because he was adopted by moisture farmers. Thus, he is called “farm boy.”

Why does Lucas do it this way? I think he just likes it. Calling someone a Queen or a Princess makes it sound more like a fairy tale. It sounds more dramatic than Town Councilwoman. I suppose it’s possible that in another galaxy (it’s far away, dontcha know  ), politics has evolved to the point where some peoples choose to call their elected leader by a title that reflects on the proud, though dated, tradition of their ancient ancestors. It’s respect for the office, not the individual, that leads to Amidala being called “Queen.”

I don’t think at any point in the original movies is it stated boldly that the mother that Leia remembers is FOR SURE Luke and Leia’s biological mother. It seems likely that Amidala takes Leia and seeks refuge on Alderaan, while Obi Wan grabs Luke and high tails it to Tatooine, but there’s wiggle room if Lucas decides that he doesn’t want it to happen that way and that Leia’s memories are actually of a very kindly, deceased Alderaanian foster mother (maybe yet another of Amidala’s decoys meets a bad end?).

Then why do you bother with threads like this one?
