Holy crap! No more Dio?

Yeah, and you can say the same about those who have indicated that they won’t miss him. I think having drawn this much ire from such a large cross-section of the board actually does not speak that well for him.

To the contrary, like newspaperman Finley Peter Dunne, Dio’s mission was to comfort the afflicted, and afflict the comfortable. Everybody lies on one side or the other of that line as he drew it, so it is not surprising if he ruffled at least half the feathers around here.

Hell, he labeled himself an “expert” (yet in one math thread stated that he had no idea who Euler, one of the most famous mathematicians of all time, was). A Taoist proverb states that those who know do not speak; those who speak do not know. That would make for a good epitaph for him now that I think about it (if we have a graveyard of sorts for such personages, which of course we don’t for good reason).

If someone pees about 4 ounces in a 10,000 gallon swimming pool, is that okay? Sadly, Dio was the same way. He peed in the pool several times.

This sums up my feelings pretty well too. Dio is what brought me here. I think the board will suffer some in his absence.

Long overdue. He had much to offer, but he detracted more.

Yes?

I would still swim in that pool, but I would look askance – STRONGLY ASKANCE – at the four-ounce peeist.

It would be more, but for my prostate…

Yeah, he made some positive contributions. All that knowledgeable? I don’t see it. But a volume of posts that were not crap? Sure. Still, even he acknowledged that he often was just trolling, he often derailed discussions, and he was given many chances to step away from the ledge. His quality to crap ratio did not justify ignoring the rules just for him. Still, I also could ignore his crap just fine and did not find him as annoying as many others that are still here.

Dio was fantastic at smacking around ignorant Christians. Other than that…

This was long overdue.

Whenever a long-term poster is sent packing, there’s always a lot of rending of garments that the board will never be the same, and that’s true, it won’t, but so far it’s continued to survive. And I’m sure it will in the future. But as I’ve posted less and less over the years, especially in political threads where the frustration is simply too much to bear, I was always comforted that Dio was there, waging the battles I was too fried to wage. Sure, he was a jerk sometimes. Who wouldn’t be?

Yeah, there’s only one section of the board for SDMB subjects. Other than that, it’s just your regular message board.

We have this conversation almost every time a member is banned. “But he/she contributed so much, it wasn’t his/her fault, can’t we bend the rules a little for such a long time poster, it’s everyone else’s fault, they didn’t get enough warnings, etc.”

Dio brought it on himself.

Like most bannings, this was a bad decision - this one worse than most. Weak.

I was so looking forward to his (over)reaction to what could be another ugly election night for the libs in 2012

I was at about a “meh-minus” about the banning (i.e., not excited, a little upset, mostly just meh), but then I read all of the posts linked to in his official banning thread. I had missed every single one of those the first time around. Now I’m extremely glad his ass is gone.

I’d recommend that others on the meh-wagon take a look at those posts.

So what? I know people who are periodically jerks in real life, too. I don’t run to mom and ask her to keep them away from me.

Dio was not periodically a jerk. At least not in several years.

Bear in mind, when you take into account how many of those were repeating the same point over and over again, it’s really only about 5600 posts for a normal poster.

He was smart and witty when he first came here, and got progressively meaner and shriller. Not to be mourned nor missed.
