I recently transferred to the Design department at work, and they shipped me a brand spanking new Macbook Pro. It is a really nice, elegant yet sturdy piece of equipment. I have used Macs before, but it’s been an adjustment for me in the little things. I’ve also found that Mac users continue to be somewhat elitist about their preference of machines.
For instance, I tried creating a subfolder in Finder by right-clicking on the folder and choosing new folder. It created the new folder in the root directory, instead of the folder I chose. I googled and went to a forum where this issue was brought up, and the general response from Mac Users was “Open the folder and then create the new subfolder. We’ve been doing it this way for 25 years and that’s final!”
Don’t dare suggest the PC does it better. In their minds, the PC will always be an inferior machine. It was that way in the 1990s-2000s, but the PC has vastly improved since. Windows now operates directly from hardware, instead of as a shell for DOS. They use the same chips and processors as Macs, and besides, Microsoft and Apple realized it was bad for business to have incompatible operating platforms. Besides, nowadays Apple doesn’t place their home computers as high a priority as they do iPhones, so they’ve arguably slouched in evolving them.
In the Design department’s last meeting (over MS teams, I might add), they started discussing how they could get extra storage for their files. I’m thinking, have they not heard of the Cloud? I said “Hey guys, how about the company’s OneDrive? I managed to transfer all my old files to my new machine because of it, and all it took was creating a login on the company’s Office account.” Awkward silence ensued. Then they started grumbling over limited space, issues with the IT department not understanding that they use Macs, nightmares about IT taking a week to answer their job tickets, etc. Then one guy said “I think we can rule out using OneDrive.”
I sent an email to the Design Team after that, explaining that MS is light years better than it used to be, the OneDrive account stores 15 gigs, and it that’s not enough, they could get access to 15 more free gigs storage through Google Drive. The only response I got was a YouTube link to a compilation of Mac vs PC commercials that showed the nerdy PC guy trying to justify his existence to the cool Mac guy and failing. Sigh, OK, I tried.
