He was extremely unlikely to have become a Yank as they had not talk to Boris much at all and were very far from the Giant’s offer. Even the Mets were not close to the Giant’s offer. In fact, I am not quite sure who they were bidding against. Maybe the Rangers.
Yep, I hope they call back soon. Your team made a deal like this for Sheffield, so you never know. The talk is that they are demanding a 72 hour window to negotiate and extension. WTF? They want to extend him? Wow.
I saw a quote recently, which I will mangle from memory: “a GM with money to spend is like a Sailor with his pay on a liberty. They are compelled to spend it.”
silenus, interesting rule book you got.
Sabean has done little to improve the team this year. I do not think Zito pushes them past your Dodgers.
I’m not really one to defend the Giants, but I think they have a broader picture in mind with the Zito signing. I’ve said before, Zito’s not a number one starter in my mind, and he comes up small in big games (this year’s Division Series notwithstanding). But I will give him credit for this: he is a more than capable starter who never gets hurt, eats up innings, and has been around the show for a while. SF thinks that their young pitchers Cain, Lowry and Hennessey can develop into something special, especially Matt Cain. Given that, it makes sense to get a guy who can anchor the staff, someone who won’t necessarily put them above the Dodgers, but who will win the rubber games in series against Chicago, Cincinnati and Philadelphia–the sorts of games that turn a 4-5 road trip into a 6-3 road trip. That will get the Giants back closer to contention, and that’s what they need right now. Zito won’t win a Cy Young for them, but he will help that climb back up the ladder. That makes him worth it to the Giants.
I don’t get the interest in Randy Johnson either. I know we’ve seen a bunch of guys play into their 40s lately, but that doesn’t mean it never ends. The guy will eventually lose it, and with the recent results, it looks like sooner rather than later.
Maybe Griffey should try a new religion or something. He’s definitely got the evil spirits swirling about him.
Randy Johnson is going back to the Snakes.
Johnson and $2 million for Serviceable Right handed reliever Luis Vizcaino.
Early reports are Ross Ohlendorf and Steven Jackson, and shortstop Alberto Gonzalez.
Ross is a high level prospect & right handed starter. Jackson is a borderline prospect, and right handed starter. Alberto is a bag of balls shortstop without speed or power.
Aquiring Vizcaino means the Yanks will probably be able to deal a middle reliever in spring training. Possible Vizcaino.
Betcha he travels by plane. I always liked Randy Johnson a lot, but even though he was still winning games, he seemed to lose something with the Yankees. He shaved the goatee, trimmed the mustache, and he wasn’t the same pitcher. I hope he has a few good years left in Arizona.
A slight upgrade from Giambi and Gary Sheffield, wouldn’t you say, Jim?
Good luck to RJ back in the West of the NL, I am sure **Silenus ** is less than happy.
Doug is a huge upgrade in defense over those two DHs and it should help our pitchers. He is a defensive upgrade over Philips and his bat is good enough to not be a dead spot like Andy Philips was likely to be.
One of my friends and my brother both think Andy would hit fine if played everyday. I see a player with big holes in his swing. Doug is another good OBA guy and even batting 8th or 9th should score more runs and knock in more RBIs on the Yanks than he has in the last few years.
Overall, I think we should have been able to either get more for RJ or not paid the $2m, but still a sound deal for both teams.
The Doug Mientkiewicz move I like. I really believe 1b defense is very important to the game and we can afford the lower offense.
Seems Barry Bonds isn’t actually signed for 2007, he just “reached agreement” with the Giants, the only team interested. Now he’s got his positive uppers test, and SF is apparently waking up to the non-Bay-Area PR situation.
I wish, but I doubt it. Someone will give him something to come back and play for the record. It might not be the Giants, but if he goes cheap enough, why not Baltimore* or KC? Neither team has any hope and both could use the sideshow.
I think our only hope is that is pride is too much and if he does not get at least $10 million he will retire instead.
Jim
just examples, pick any bottom dweller, especially in the AL where he could DH.
