Is there a way for me to archive emails that are in my HotMail account, on my computer? I’ve poked around and I must be missing something. I find it hard to believe that I can either print them out, or risk losing them eventually.
I never found anyway to do this, directly, and then stopped using Hotmail. Have you considered using Outlook or some other mail management program that brings the mail down to your PC? They have archiving included. It’s fairly simple to set up. I do that with some of my email accounts. You can use Yahoo! and do this, I’m fairly certain.
Oh, Shib, I’m a freakin’ e-mail whore. I have three HotMail accounts, I use Outlook Express for my local IP Email name, and am close to having a website built for my new business.
The problem is that I feel strongly that I should archive all the emails from the one HotMail that is currently used only for the new business. I guess if nothing else, I will have to print them all out.
But yeah, Outlook Express does me just great, and I use the Mail software on my Macintosh laptop as well, and that’s equally easy to work with.
I have three Hotmail accounts and I access all of them from Outlook Express. I haven’t been to the Hotmail site in years. IIRC, you go to the Tools menu to set up a new Mail account and as you walk through the wizard, it will give you the option for Hotmail. Once you get it set up, it will automatically mirror all your Hotmail folders on your machine. Quite handy, actually. Your machine is the backup for Hotmail and Hotmail is the backup for your machine.
I’ve just read this like 3 times, and I am still unclear. Is this a choice I make when setting up my Outlook Express account, or my HotMail account?? Either way, I’d have trouble making that work on the Mail software for a Mac, yes? no? Hmmm. Please elaborate?
Outlook Express (OE) is an application that can retrieve your mail from one mail account or many mail accounts.
To add your Hotmail accounts, from within OE, choose Tools, Accounts, the Mail tab, Add, Mail, enter your name, click Next, enter your Hotmail email address, and click next. On the next screen, it should already know that this is an HTTP account (i.e., not a POP3 type account), and that it’s Hotmail, so you can just click Next. Then, enter your Hotmail account password, click Next, then click Finish. Voila! OE will now retrieve your Hotmail messages. Rinse and repeat for your other Hotmail accounts.
Sorry, but I can’t help you with Mail for the Mac, having never seen the beast.
Another option (also costs money) is to upgrade your Hotmail account to MSN 8. If you click the “HOME” tab there should be some features on the left that encourage you to “upgrade” your hotmail account.
One of the features of upgrading is that it will allow you to connect your hotmail account to Outlook.
I’m not entirely sure, but I also think it will let you backup/download your messages to your computer.
Thanks, Early Out. I will try it later on this morning.
Now, for Part II…the tricky part. Does anyone know how to automatically forward emails that come to a hotmail account on to another address? In the next month or two, I will either need to do this, or keep going to the hotmail account and manually forwarding them. ( Not a huge pain, but a pain ).
Why pay for anything at all? As I’ve outlined above, you can set up Outlook Express (and regular Outlook, in a similar manner) to retrieve your Hotmail messages. It’s free. You don’t need any other software. You don’t need to pay for anything.
what we’ve failed to mention is once you setup your Outlook Express to retrieve your hotmail-email, you want to ‘archive’ it correct? I created folders in my local Inbox (in Outlook) called Archive-online purchases, Archive-photos, etc, and I can drag and drop emails (usually family photo’s etc which are huge) in there, and that keeps my hotmail under the size limit.
