A patient suffers from something called Mosaicism (?), and House has health issues of his own.
A kid born with both genitalia collapses during a basketball game.
Okay, so they decide they’re going to check for a narrow urethra, the kid asks about how that could happen, and the doctors are at a momentary loss for words. I would have thought they’d have at least made a reference to King of the Hill.
So, do they tell the kid he’s got both sex characteristics at the 30 minute mark, or do they wait till the 45 minute mark?
So, Foreman was fired and then got his job back by the end of the episode last week…
House quit and got his job back before the end this week…
Who gets temporarily unemployed next week?
Probably “Kumar,” since I think that Taub’s already had a Near Job Loss Experience. No sign of Chase or Cameron this week, I noticed. I’m wondering if methadone can actually block pain. (Polite Dissent doesn’t have its review up yet, dammit.)
Hasn’t House done the “intersexed person who doesn’t know” at least twice before?
One of those was a Girl that was a boy but just had defunct receptors for Testosterone, so s/he never developed male features.
This case was a chimera, with BOTH male and female features being presented in the individual- it was a different scenario, as they were giving testosterone to suppress the female side and increase the masculine developments more so. Though if the kid was a chimera, it would vary which tissues were male and which were female, leading to situations where the kid could get one breast developed and one that wouldn’t be or such. But yeah, I’d call it two different cases even if they may have similar features, the way it comes about is quite different (the first case was a boy that never turned into a boy, while this one was a Chimera, who isn’t really male or female, but both and the family CHOSE to make them into a Male).
It’s kind of interesting having read all the Great Debate issues on Intervening on Gay Fetuses, because the whole time watching this episode, that’s what I kept thinking of.
That and the fact that when the kid said he liked the boy, I was just waiting for 13 to come out and say- “you can have your cake and eat it with Rocky Road too! Bisexuality! It doesn’t have to be one or the other. You’re a model candidate for bisexuality! Just like me!”
I figured that 13 realized she’d better pipe down and not bring up her bisexuality after all.
Wow, I barely recognized the nicer House with the clean-shaven mug!
I wanna know how a man can keep a 5 o’clock shadow without ever being clean shaven. Does he only shave when he has a few days off work so he can grow back the stubble? If not, shouldn’t he have a full beard by now? Or is it common for guys to only be able to grow scraggly beards?
I have a beard trimmer. If I put it on the lowest setting I can keep a perfect 5 o’clock shadow. It’s good for situations where I should shave but can get by without being completely clean shaven, and don’t want to take the time to lather up.
I wasn’t aware that giving a titty-twister was accepted medical procedure for a patient in respiratory distress.
My mom was taking methadone for pain when she was suffering from lung cancer and chemo.
Why does anyone go to that hospital. Every time they run a diagnostic test, they nearly kill the patient.
I was so scared they were going to take away House’s pain and change his appearance. Those are the things that make house House.
It’s never lupus! Or heroin!
I thought it was really cool, because removing his pain was the first development in some time to really explain House’s personality. Poorly phrased - but I was interested in how it would play out. Would have liked it over a couple of ep arc.
One thing I learned from last night’s ep is I have a high tolerance for watching surgeries and all kinds of invasive procedures, just don’t expect me to follow a storyline while they are threading a catheter/scope up THERE!
My fave moment was Wilson’s reaction after Cuddy suggested he might be able to get back some of the $ he had lent House! Also liked Taub and Kumar messing w/ 14.
Man, I wanted to smack that mom. Yeah, whenever in doubt, lie to the kid. And at the end, “He won’t let us in the room!” Right!
Not sure House calling them idiots would be enough to stave off the malpractice lawsuit.
I know! I was thinking of saying something similar as I was reading the thread! I can usually handle seeing just about anything network TV, (and beyond) can through at me, but when that scene was on, I had one eye closed and was chanting in my head: “Exit only, exit only”!
I missed most of the episode, as I was busy dealing with family stuff.
Why were the parents vexed with Thirteen? Did she spill the beans to the kid about his having two sets of genitalia, and if so, why?
Why did House shave? Was he about to take another job?
A summary would be appreciated.
Not quite, but she told the kid that the testosterone shot he was getting wasn’t vitamins (which is what his parents told him) and that he should ask them about it.
Why did House shave? Was he about to take another job?
He was feeling happier. Part was the job interview, but part was a change in his outlook due to the methadone.
Speaking as someone who’s been told on more than one occassion, “Watching House is like watching you practice medicine.” most likely what happens is that House only shaves on the day before he has to go back to work. The rest of the time, he stumbles out of bed, bathes, goes to work, comes home, gets blotto’d, goes to bed, and repeats the process the next day. You wind up looking fuzzy all the time, but you don’t appear to have a full beard at any time.
The razor that House was using, BTW, was a single blade, cheap, disposable Bic that would not give you the nice, squeaky clean kind of shave that House wound up with. (I will say, however, that allowing your beard to grow for a couple of days between shaves will enable you to get a cleaner shave than if you shave every day.)
Technically they would’ve done a sterum rub, which is indeed one of the more painful things you can do to someone (grab the flat area between the breasts, shake vigorously), but doesn’t make for ‘as good’ tv.
I watched a doc do a sterum rub on a patient I’d gotten called in to assess because they thought he was faking being passed out; guy didn’t even twitch, leading me to question the efficacy of the procedure. Never, ever question a neuro doc who’s running on about two hours of sleep, or you’ll get a hands-on demonstration. Ow.
