How am I doing?

I’m just wondering, how am I doing as a member as a SD member?
Anything I need to improve on, or vice versa?
Am I witty/annoying/your messiah/intelligent/ mind blowingly stupid :stuck_out_tongue: / etc?

Well, speaking for myself, you have a ways to go before people notice you. I know I’ve replied to you in a thread in the past day or two, but that’s all I can think of.

This is a big bad board, and 169 posts is but a blip on the radar. It’s a good sign that you care enough to start a thread, though- I think I may do the same.

But hey, at this point, I think not being recognized is very far from the worst that could happen. (Where is SmileyDeath*, anyway?)

Welcome to the Dope, and hopefully you’ll make a name for yourself over the years. Yes, there will be years.

*- He registered and promptly posted everywhere racking up what, a few hundred posts in a week, I think.

A search for him shows that his name doth sayeth:
BANNED

I dunno why. He seemed to be only mildly annoying.

Is this for freakin’ real?

Don’t feel bad, Aslan2. No one knows me yet either. It’s a big board, as Troy mentioned.

What do you mean?

Aslan2, sorry.

I just have no idea why you care about this.

what are your reasons for posting here? to impress us?
if I told you you are a great poster… but you could really do with a haircut, would you go and cut yoru hair just for me; a stranger on the net?

know yourself and be yoruself, sunshine.

I post here to be helpful, to engage in discussion or say my beliefs. Help for the fight against the ignorant.
I’m just asking if I’m doing a good job, am I being helpful, am I being funny, witty, annoying, etc. while doing it?
I’m just asking how I am as a poster, not asking whether or not I should just dye my har purple or something stupid like that.
Grow up

Come on MissBungle, we all wanna be loved :).

MissBungle is a newbie just like you and me but already has her own pit thread , that’s why she can have that 'tude.

Being of the same board age as you (but not having your post count) I can agree with the feeling to want to know how you are doing. However I’d be to shy to directly ask. So bonus points for chutspa (or however that thing is called).

posting ain’t a contest.

uh oh, is it?

did I lose?

would i care if i lost… no.

Do not worry about how you are doing. Express your opinion as desired, let the chips fall where they may. Lots of Dopers on the board, many may remember your posts and not your username. I know I rarely check the name or the post count unless it’s an outstanding post that makes the earth tremble. Don’t be a jerk, treat others with respect, don’t worry about getting pitted, I’ve been there when I first joined years ago and it’s not a big deal. You will need to grow a thick skin, just because not all people are nice. I, myself, tend to be blunt and sarcastic, but most posters know that by now and usually just take it with a grain of salt. Your own posting style will develop and people will recognize you by that. Good luck, welcome aboard. And newbie status isn’t determined by post count but by your ability to fit in. Some posters have over 1,000 and are still newbies just because they don’t ‘get’ it.

I’ve got chutzpa to spare, with your macho you bore me…

Aslan, allow me to step in for a sec, and do correct me if I’m wrong…

MissBungle, he’s just asking for some honest criticism about his SDMB self. He likely wants to fit in and help make this board an even better place. The Internet is a funny medium, and many of the nuances of behavior we depend on IRL (in real life) for social interactions are completely missing online. Therefore, he chose to directly solicit our opinions, since he can’t pick up on it himself. He is not trying to win any contests. Likely he’s trying to find out if he’s doing anything that wiull lead to a pitting later on.

Again, that’s my take on the situation, based on my own thoughts over the years here, not Aslan’s.

On preview, ultress has great advice.

You’re correct, Troy McClure.
I guess this would be a more appropriate when I’ve been here 2 or 3 years.

You’re OK by me Aslan2, FWIW. Don’t listen to Miss Bungle too much, she tends to drive by and post nasty things. It’s not just you.

Not so much “appropriate,” just more useful, because by then, more people will know who you are. Hell, I figure I’m still a nobody to most, and I have almost four years here.

Well Aslan, I’ve read only one of your posts… don’t have a sweet clue what it was about, but I remember your Sig! Sent shivers down my spine and had me singing Adam’s songs all day! You’ve touched me! sniff

Seriously, don’t worry about making a difference in your first year, let alone month!

Psssstttt… Aslan, it’s Adam Duritz, and not Adam Durlitz.

Cheers!

I think I understand where you are coming from Aslan. I registered here a good while ago, and have lurked with my fairly minimal post count since then. Only recently have I started trying to add something to the board. But even if I am completely confident about what I wrote, I always second guess myself when it comes down to hitting Submit Reply. It’s probably just my low self esteem, on top of the fact that if I don’t say anything, someone will most likely come along and say something more intelligent and to the point than I would have. I am trying to stop being so self-concious about posting things on a message board full of people I’ll probably never ever meet, but it’s still intimidating to me. Sometimes it feels like I kill threads too, I don’t know if you have had this feeling on the SDMB yet, but it’s not good. Especially if you post what you think is a relevant argument about something you are very interested in, then everyone leaves it alone for some reason.

Anyway, enough venting hehe…

I think you’re doing just fine, Aslan, at least from this thread. You seem pleasant enough, and that’s all I really care about. ultress pretty much said it all.

Miss Bungle, please play nice.

To all you newbies (Aslan, Miss Bungle, hyperjes, TTT, and anyone else) : Welcome to the SDMB. Please help youselves to some Imaginary Welcome Cookies. I have chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin. They’re damn good.
