Ca. San Joaquin (“Central”) Valley. Fairly hot lately. And yes, humid and muggy too for the last several days. I stay indoors mostly, but I keep the windows open because I like fresh air. I don’t use the AC. I can cope with being hot, even though it can get rather uncomfortable. My car had worse problems for many years. A few years back, Fresno had about 110 for a whole week.
Last summer I decided to try being decadent for a change, and use the AC, for about two weeks. It doubled my Electric bill for that month.
I’m not sure about the vacation habits of our European brethren, but I did notice that the ‘overnight low’ at Stovepipe Wells last light (actually at 6:50 this morning) was an almost-frigid 103 degrees…
…but at a whopping 13% humidity, it really *was *a dry heat.
It’s horrible. We can usually count on not getting the triple digits until late July. A week or so then. A week in August and the rest of the summer moderately bearable in the low 90s or so. This heat wave does not bode well for the rest of the summer.
We have never installed A/C because it’s expensive and I can stand the heat for two weeks out of the year. If this is going to be how it is from now on, we may have to do that by next summer. One window unit just doesn’t cut it when the temps get over 95 or so.
I stand corrected. It’s hot now. I don’t have air conditioning, so I’ve been making do with T-shirts soaked in water and time in my shady hammock spot.
Hasn’t been humid in Southern Oregon, where I am, which was my point.
We get over 110° a couple days each summer and temps over 100° off and on throughout. So I’m used to it. I was doing fine until today when the clouds and smoke from the fires in the foothills settled into the valley. Now I don’t feel well.
The way I am dealing with the heat is I’ve just had a cold shower, didn’t dry off or put on clothes and I’m sucking down a Slurpee. I also have two fans pointed at me.
Where I am, it was in the upper 80’s for a week, which isn’t so bad except for stifling humidity, and rain. There’s still till July and August to get through, we will get 90’s and maybe hit 100. I have a huge window AC in my room, we paid a guy to come over and put it in (wait, that doesn’t sound right!!!) - because we have bad backs and the thing weighs a ton. I don’t care if we have to cave and pay some younger stronger guy to do what we can’t. I don’t care if the electricity bill triples. I don’t care if “summer is only a couple of months, we can tough it out”. I am too old for that shit, I don’t want AC, I NEED AC. I told Mr. S that he better call our handyman guy to get over here and install the AC or I would leave him. I would go stay with friends who have a nice cool house, for the rest of the summer. I was serious.
Possibly. She’s some sort of computer graphic designer. All I myself know about the trip is it’s with her boss and several colleagues, and she and some of them will spend a couple extra days to do the tourist thing.
Today’s high is expected to reach 106 (it’s just 101 now at 1pm), but we’ve had some 110-115 days lately. Good thing is that this part of the desert cools off at night, so it’s only really hot from late morning till around 8p. With good air conditioning, we barely even notice.
Now, we did experience a power outage for a few hours a couple of days ago and it got pretty uncomfortable. That’s when you grab your laptop and run to Starbucks, though.
