Rocket and feather economics. [Possible paywall alert if you have exceeded your freebie views] Here in Ohio there has been no price cycle in 3 weeks now–yet, and, since I am taking a day trip today, I hope there isn’t one until I can get back home and fill up.
$4.69 for regular in suburban Cook County today, which is about 70c lower than it was when it peaked in mid-May.
It was around $4.09 in Green Bay earlier this week, which was about 80c below where it was a few weeks ago.
As I said before, I don’t pay much attention to gas prices because I drive so little, but today since I was passing my usual discount station and had just a quarter tank of what I presumed was still “winter gas”, I thought I’d fill up. Jesus Christ on a pogo stick! 
$80 for 3/4 of a tank on a mid-size Toyota Camry! That’s the biggest bill I’ve ever had for a fill-up, and it was far from a full tank! I don’t remember the exact posted price but I think it was around CAD $1.74 a liter. It doesn’t seem that long ago when oil prices were hitting short-term rock bottom that gas prices sank below $1 per liter.
I travelled to near Dodgeville, WI where gas was $4.09. This is ~115 miles from me. Closer to home it was $3.84. Granted there is more competition and it is closer to to the border but it amazed me that there was that much variation over such a short distance

My local Costco has gas for $3.39. The regular stations around there are $3.59. Murfreesboro, TN, one county over from Nashville.

I’ve seen such huge spreads (50 cents or more) just a few miles apart in many cases; the longer things go without a price correction back upwards (Ohio is undergoing such right now), the more out-of-whack prices get from each other, and the astute bargain-hunting driver can take big advantage before they do increase.
Much to my amazement, DH’s preferred gas station has dropped 20 cents/gallon in the last 24 hours. My usual E85 station is holding steady.
Within a couple miles it goes from $4.19 to 3.69 on the way to the grocery store.
The price of crude oil has dropped almost 16% in the past month.
Gasoline prices have not.
I’ve felt that way for a long time, well before the Trumpening. I’ve bored people with this before, but I always modify my pickups to add auxiliary tanks. Current truck holds ~70 gallons, which gets me across any spot shortages while traveling, and I can (sorta) plan refueling around prices.
FTR: Tanks are legit DOT-approved fuel tanks, with venting/grounding/etc., not Wallyworld plastic.
Almost forgot… Paid $3.39 last time I fueled.
Depends on where you live. The national is indeed down 50 cents over the last month, 11%, and there is always a lag between crude and retail during a longer-term decline. In Ohio we had a jump back to $4.89 a month ago, but I was able to get $3.81 last Sunday in premium (after my $1.10 in discounts: regular being $3.91), and after another jump on Tuesday to $4.39 that same station was already down to $4.08 yesterday.
It’s dropped to $4.759 at the tribal station, and $4.859 at the nearest Arco.
Good point, and I should have clarified my statement. Here in the Wichita area, the price has dropped about 30 cents in the past month, which is about 9%. Although, like your area, the price jumps 10-20 cents, then drops back down in a couple of days.
I just paid $3.94 today and was thrilled, then I realized I can recall when gas was $2.85. I’m in PA.
This weekend fuel in San Juan is down to $4.09-4.12 regular, $4.57-4.61 for premium and diesel.
Had family out to Hawaii, gas was roughly around $5.65 to $5.85. They remarked, " That’s not too bad ". They’re from the SF Bay area.
Filled up at one of the cheapest options in San Jose (Moe’s) yesterday: $5.31 cash for regular.
Try the Gulf station at Santa Teresa and Snell. It was $5.19 yesterday.
Closer to home (20 miles south of San Jose), the typical price is $5.59 a gallon.
Up in Wisconsin this weekend, regular ranged from $4.09 to $4.39. Back here in suburban Cook County, Illinois, it’s around $4.69.
When I was in first or second grade it was $0.33. By the time I was in high school it had gone up to $0.36 – a three-cent increase. And then people were really ticked off when it jumped to $0.39 that summer – a three-cent increase in one go.
The NEX gas station was $3.93 Thursday, as were two of the half-dozen or so we passed on the way there. Don’t remember what the others’ prices were, but I don’t think any were over $4.00.
