How big is too big? For a TV, I mean...

I live for TV, my normal viewing is on a 55" but I like to use a 100" projection for movies.

I think it really depends on the distance between eyes & TV. The one I mainly use is the 24" HDTV monitor next to my computer desk.

I currently have about 10 ft front proj screen in gameroom and want to go much bigger.

Blue ray is stunning at that size - essentially I-max at home. Video games rock as well.

Old front proj is in master bedroom - maybe 90 in or so - haven’t measured.

But I have modeled the gameroom in 3d to see what’s possible with the space I’ve got.

When I’m just watching a tv show, like Seinfeld reruns, I just use my 26" LCD. When I want to watch a Blu-ray or HD-DVD or want to play my XBox 360 or Wii, I use my 100" screen and projector. You can buy a very nice projector and build a screen for much less than you can buy a television that is about half as large. You can also buy a screen that rolls up into the ceiling if you want to save space.

I’d just like to note at this point that there is a 14:1 ratio of men to women in favor of televisions larger than 52 inches. This is not doing much to dispell the notion of a sexual divide.

  1. Find out how big the space is for your new TV.

  2. Fill that space with TV.
Really, it doesn’t get simpler than that. Male mentality FTW.

I’m a girl and wanted a home theatre system so I got a 63 inch tv which fits nicely in the tv spot in the house. The tv over in the bedroom is 47 inches and doesnt look too big for the spot on the wall facing the bed.

At home I have a 42" that I typically watch from about 6’ away and I think it’s too small. Eventually I want this TV to be the one in my bedroom. I want to get a 60" which is about the largest that I think you could watch from that range without having to move your head.

Currently I’ve watching a 32" widescreen TV that only has standard displays going to it so I’m watching a much smaller screen. It sucks, sports are hard to watch and movies lose all their detail (especially when displayed in letterbox so I’m only using 1/4 of the screen). I can’t imagine ever going back to something so small.

What you need is a HD projector, and some specialty wall paint. When the TV is off you have a bare, somewhat reflective, wall. When it’s on, you have the largest, sharpest TV in the city. Take the cash you save, and buy some nice velvet curtains, and upgrade your audio.

This one seems a bit large.

I wouldn’t go with a real big picture size doing this because you can only put the center speaker above/below/to the side. At some point the sound from the center channel is too far from where the sound looks like it should be coming from.

My center channel is directly behind the fabric screen. When I build my next bigger screen, all 3 front channels will go behind the screen. Existing proj can zoom much larger, but I need to order some specialty fabric to build a screen that size.

Just using the wall for the bedroom proj though cause I don’t care too much about it in there.

Meh, I’ll wait for the 2000" model, since Frank bogarted the last one at the store.

Depends how far away from it you are. If you have one in your office and are pretty close, then a smaller one is better. If you have a 50 foot living room, then bigger is better.

All depends on how far you’re sitting from the screen. Right now, we have a huge living room, and a 65" TV. However, we’re moving this weekend, and the living room is a good bit smaller. Consequently, I went out and got a 46" TV for the new place.

If you sit as close to the 65" as we’ll be sitting to the 46", it simply wouldn’t look as nice. Plus it’s an older rear-projection model – the picture is the sharpest I’ve ever seen, but this thing is a fricking monster. I’m done moving it.

Anyway, a good rule of thumb I’ve found is that you want the screen size to be approximately 1/3rd the distance you’ll be sitting from the TV.

By the by, anyone wanna buy a 65" TV?

I had a 46 inch HD flat screen for three whole days before it was stolen. When I got the insurance money, a 52 inch was on sale for almost the same price so I got that. Love it! My only complaint is that with the HD and the size, one can see the makeup on the actors on some shows (The Mentalist, I’m talking to you!) and it’s distracting. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m not generally a stereotypical guy who feels bigger is always better. But television is an exception - a bigger screen really is objectively better. You’ll get more detail on a bigger screen than you will on a smaller one.

It’s all about the size baby. Even 3 feet away, I want a 102" screen! Bigger really is better.

I think the tv should fit the room not dwarf it. I have seen some TV’s that were just too big for the room size. I’m talking huge though.

I think the large flat screens look better with a wall mount. It just looks clean and kind of like being at a theatre.

I’m in the process of building a HT in our basement. It will have a projector and 103" (diag) screen. We will be sitting about 10 feet away.

The first time I turned on my new 55" Panasonic, the angelic chorus went, Whaaaaaaa!!!

I was going to take it up to my “up north” place this spring, but I can’t part with it.

I’ll just have to buy another one for up there. Cool!
