I appreciate the kind words, but let’s not kid ourselves. I wrote that post purely for my own amusement, and not in the expectation that johnny M would actually read or comprehend it. Responding to one of johnny’s posts is to a real Great Debate what playing t-ball is to pitching in the World Series. Eve’s response is every bit as valid as mine, and probably a better use of her resources.
I still don’t get the hate. He really seems like a harmless loon. His threads are silly, but there’s a lot worse out there, and he’s only started 2 in GD and 1 in the comments forum. He’s not nearly as annoying as, say, Bible Man.
No disrespect to Eve, but Johnny M seems like the least pit-worthy buffoon we have.

I agree. and the comments wrt to newbieness are also appropriate. A pile on for a guest? not so much, IMHO, especially since it seems that their sins amount to be: not particularly skilled at debate, spelling, grammar, not familiar w/the social skills around here.

There is some communication breakdown here. You claim that something is a “worse insult,” and that I used it in reference to you, but you were not insulted. Now if you were not insulted, how can it be an insult at all, at least as far as you are concerned?

“You’re a fucking asshole” is a worse insult than “You’re a jerk” but I wouldn’t feel personally insulted if I was called either of those things in the Pit because I don’t take it personally.
If you were not insulted, there was no insult. Q.E.D. Neither ‘fucking asshole’ or ‘jerk’ is an insult as far as you are concerned, because you would not be insulted by those terms. As a corollary, you are in no position to judge what might be an insult to me.
If you accuse me of using ‘a worse insult’ when referring to you, you were either insulted, or lying about it. It as a remarkable twisting of the language to claim that an insult was levied, yet no insult occurred.
This is a matter of semantics. Maybe I am using the word incorrectly. If you believe that I am a liar, so be it.

I don’t think that’s true. If I insult you in Hungarian, and you don’t speak Hungarian, have you not been insulted? I think the intent behind a statement matters here at least as much as how it has been received. Hajario can perceive when something was intended to insult him. That he does not give a shit about being insulted does not alter the intent behind the original insult.
That is exactly what I was trying to say but I actually came back here to say that maybe “pejorative” would have been a better word there than “insult.”
Well, “de-ate” is obviously a past tense for something that is the reverse of eating, i.e., vomiting. And “borad” is obviously “Borat” as rendered by someone who, like Johnny M, does not care for majuscule letters, and who tends to pronounce words with the final consonant voiced (the reverse of German and Russian).
Ergo, a “deate borad” is a bulimic Kazakh.

Huh? No, if I someone speaking Hungarian insults me, I have not been insulted. I do not speak Hungarian. It is just noise to me. He may have intended it as an insult, but I cannot understand it as an insult.
If you need to know a particular medical procedure in order to save a friend’s life, and you are given instructions in Hungarian, have you been told anything? The Hungarian doctor certainly *intended *to tell you how to go about it.
A Hungarian could certainly insult me using sign language.
It is all moot, as **Hajario **himself determined that the phrase was an insult, and then claimed not to be insulted by it. How did he come by this determination? If it is not an insult in his frame of reference, it is not an insult.
You have not been insulted, which is to say, you don’t feel that specific emotion. However, that does not make what I said not an insult. Your inability to comprehend what was said does not change the nature of what was said.
Let me put it this way. If I insult you in Hungarian, and you don’t understand Hungarian, what have I just said to you? It’s not “just noise,” because I had a clear and specific meaning behind what I said. If it’s not an insult, what is it?

Sure it is. If I throw a punch at you, and you duck, I’ve still thrown a punch. That it didn’t connect does not change the intent behind my swinging my fist at you. I think you’re confusing two seperate, but closely related, concepts: “insult” as a noun or verb, and “insult” as an adjective. If I say, “Fuck you,” that an insult (noun). I’m being insulting (verb). However, if you don’t understand me, or don’t care about me, you might not feel insulted (adjective). An insult (noun) is an attempt to change your internal state to insulted (adj). If I don’t achieve the adjective, that does not mean I did not employ the noun.
