How do I change my screen name in AIM?

That’s it. I have no clue and my daughter has the same need.

She’s gonna have her first baby in November. Twins im fact!

So if you know the answer, think how she’ll appreciate it, probablyy even more than I.

Actually, my daughter needs a full identity change. She and her husband had a house guiest who intitaed the AIM thing with his name, etc.

Sio, what she wants to do is to take him out of there and pputr herself in.

Help, please — if you can…

I have never used AIM myself but creating a new account would be one surefire way of creating a new identity, then just log into AIM with the new account and you’re good to go.

As far as I know, there is no way to change your AIM name. You just have to make a new account if you want a new name.

Turns out, there is a way.

Now this might seem outlandish but…

what you must do is bring up the Sign On Screen.

Go ahead and laugh, but,

  1. Double click the AIM icon in your systray and x-out the junk that comes up on your monitor.

  2. Now, right-click the iAIM con to bring up a menu.

  3. Select “sign off” and then YES

  4. Now you have the Sign On screen.

  5. Delete your Screen Name and click on Get a Screen Name

And just follow the directions. You don’t actually delete the old name, apparently, but I think you will get a new name to use.
Now, will someone tell me how to change one’s entire AIM identity.

What do you mean by “AIM identity”? A new screen name basically is a new identity.

The rest of the info that was inputted was on the house guest.

The AIM username is the account name. There is no way to change the username on an account. You can create a new account (I.E. Get a Screen Name), which it seems is what you’ve done.

I assume you’re talking about the user profile when you refer to “AIM identity”, but I haven’t used the AIM client recently enough to tell you how to get to that.

Not even if I delete everything of AOL in my system and start again from scratch? (I’m serious.)

There is no way to change the name on an individual account. The name is the account.

I’m confused as to what you’re after. Do you want to preserve the settings from the original account while changing the screen name? There is a way to save the buddy list and then load it for the new screen name; the other settings you’ll have to reset manually.

To save the buddy list, log on to the original screen name, and then on the “My AIM” menu choose “Save Buddy List”. Save the file. Then log on to the new screen name, and on the “My AIM” menu choose “Load Buddy List”. Select the saved buddy list and you should be good to go.

Deep down, what I really wanted to do is uninstall AIM (and the Weather Bug) as well. And I can’t tell you how happy that makes me.

That is, I found the Uninstallers for AIM and the Weatherbug. The prrograms are gone from my system.

I know this is probably impossible, but is there a way to get a new screen name, AND have all your buddies automatically have your new screenname in place of the old one?

Well, you could go to C:\Program Files\Aim, open the file, find the Uninstallers and uninstall.

Then download a fresh version, input your new name, etc., and see what happens. You have nothing to lose, I should expect.

They probably wouldn’t let you have the same name again on a new account, even if you deleted the old account.

If you just put in the old account name on a fresh install, AOL would helpfully re-load all the stored data on it’s servers, putting you basically back where you started.

If your issue is with the AIM program itself… get GAIM or Miranda-IM or some other multi-messenger program.

Good idea.

Does gaim or Miranda clutter up the system anything like AIM/Weather Bug? Of the two, which do you feel is better?

Uh, “Of the two…” referred to gaim and Miranda-IM :smack:

Back when I made the choice between the two, I chose Miranda. That was about two years ago, so I’d imagine GAIM has made some progress since then. I started looking around for a multi-messenger because I didn’t see the point of having Yahoo, AIM, and ICQ all running at once, each offering IMs, chat, voice chat, reminders, video teleconferencing, IMvironments, icons, avatars, graphical smilies, ranbow colored text, etc. I wanted something for instant messaging. A contact list and the ability to trade text with people. GAIM seemed like it had the same creeping featurism bloatware aspect to it when I tried it.

Miranda is pretty sparse and ugly by default, having started life as an ICQ mimic. They have plug-ins for just about everything, though, so you can get the features and look you want, and only the features and look you want. It’s super-customizable, with all the benefits and pitfalls that implies.

I don;t know what GAIM has to offer currently, though… so try them both and see which one you prefer.

What about Trillian?

Compare installer sizes…
Trillian is 8.58MB
GAIM is 6.32MB
Miranda is 995KB

It’s largely a question of how much customization you want… and then if you want to customize by turning stuff off or if you want to customize by turning stuff on.
