How do I safely post photos on-line so Dopers can see them?

In my thread on snow, TroubleAgain asked for pix of the snow in my area.

Technical Advice, please:

  1. I have a digital camera that can upload pictures to my computer.

  2. Said computer can link to the internet.

  3. [computer techspeak mumblety mumble]

  4. Teeming Millions can see pix of snow on their computers.

Can anyone help me with # 3? I know we can’t post photos directly to the Dope, so how do I achieve this valued goal?

Try Picasa. Personally, I use Flickr but I think Picasa has more “hand holding,” which seems to be what you need.

I bet once you figure it out you’ll be sharing photos all over

microsoft live services has iirc 500mb free storage. you can share with specific recipients only or open access to anyone on the web. also a plug in tool that allows you to upload a large number if pics. you need to set up a passport account - free on-line registration.

Slightly off-topic, but since your question has already been answered…

What is the relevance of using safely in this question? What unsafe conditions do you think might be created by posting wrongly?

thanks for the replies, everyone. t-bonham@scc.net, I’m a techno-peasant - is there any risk to uploading photos to an internet site? can I get viruses?

I use Imageshack. It’s probably about the same as other photo sites: free, easy to upload and display, and so on. But it’s another site you may wish to consider.

If you’re downloading, sure. Uploading? Not so much. Unless you’re using a dodgy site that insists you install their dodgy software (that’s infected with a dodgy virus), there’s no reason why uploading photos should put your computer at risk. But in case you aren’t doing so already, you should have an up-to-date virus scanner running on your PC that will help prevent anything sneaking in. AVG Anti Virus is free and worth a go.

I can vouch for both Picasa and Flickr being good sites as I’ve used both. As a bonus, the Picasa program (by Google) is free to download, does a good job of organising your photos and provides simple-to-use editing tools.

I don’t know, either.

Generally, I’ve only heard of people getting viruses, etc. from downloading stuff, not uploading.

I use PhotoBucket to share images. I tried some others and had trouble uploading through our company firewall. PhotoBucket worked fine though. I usually upload from home but sometimes I need to load one or two from work.

FYI, Photobucket, Imageshack, and others are sometimes blocked for us at work.
Google products such as Blogspot and Web-Albums are not blocked where I work.
If it means reaching more of us during the day you might want to consider this option.
Picasa is very easy to use and getting photos from your camera to the Web-Album is painfully easy.

Flickr has an uploader program, as well. It’s super easy to use–drag and drop, basically. And there’s an SDMB group on there as well.

:: patiently waiting for photos of snow::

Yep, they’re blocked for me at work. It really makes it a PITA to screw around at work, but I guess that’s the idea

Flickr is about the only one I can still use.

Oh and Picasa…

The group is SDMB meets Flickr.

http://tinypic.com is by far the easiest. No registering or usernames or passwords, just hit Browse, Load, and the links are displayed.
