How do you say...

Edwino came up with this idea in chat after I asked Louie how to say in Portuguese: Where can I buy three prostitutes, a mule and six barrels of oil?

So, I want to know how you say the above in various languages. Variations (that translate the general idea) are OK, if a language can say it different ways (and if a language doesn’t have some of these words, try to find a suitable replacement).

Also i want to know how to say these things in different languages:

  • How much is your daughter, the shore of Bali, and three hundred thousand hermit crabs?

  • What’s the price of chicken feet compared to fish heads?

  • I’d like six of your finest spitting camels, three date palms, and a small middle eastern village?

I’ll take a stab…

First, english.
How much is your daughter, the shore of Bali, and three hundred thousand hermit crabs?

What’s the price of chicken feet compared to fish heads?

I’d like six of your finest spitting camels, three date palms, and a small middle eastern village.
and

Where can I buy three prostitutes, a mule and six barrels of oil?

Onde posso eu comprar três prostitutes, uma mula e seis tambores do óleo?

*) These are litteral translations of what you asked. I would not know if these names actually refer to the animals you that meant however.

“Kluizenaarskrabben”

My new word of the day! I’ll try to work it into all my conversations!

I particularly cracked up at “spuugkamelen”. Hilarious

For your amusement & enlightenment:

Well, “spyttekameler” is perhaps not a bona fide word, but it works.

S. Norman

sigh and I thought this thread was going to be about Dee-lite, as in “how do you say… dee-groovy?”

Okay Okay… The last one is a bit of a stretch, I know. But hey, not everyone can be perfectly fluent can they?

I can’t believe this is my first post (finally contributing to the eradication of ignorance  )

in Russian (I may have some of the case endings wrong):

Gde mozhno kupit’ tryokh prostitutok, odnogo mula, i shest’ barrelei nefti? (or: …i shest’ bochok masla?, if you mean vegetable oil rather than crude)

Skol’ko stoyat vasha doch’, poberezh’e ostrova Bali, i trista tysyach rakov-otshel’nikov?

Mne, pozhaluysta, shestero vashykh lushchikh plevayushykh verblyud, tri finikovye pal’my, i odnu malenkuyu srednevostochnuyu derevnyu.

I’ll take a shot in my best German as well. You might want to have this checked with a native speaker. Where did you find these sentences by the way?

PS. Timchik, can you do that in Cyrrilic as well?

  1. **Ubiam tres meretrices, mulum, et sex cupas plenas oleo conducam? **[Wherever might I hire three prostitutes, a mule, and six full casks with oil?]

  2. **Quanto filia tua, litus Balii, et tres centa milia cancri inquilini constant? **[How much do your daughter, the shore of Bali, and three hundred thousand tenant crabs cost?]

  3. Quanto pedes gallinacei constant, et quanto maior capita piscaria constant? [How much do poultry feet cost, and how much more do fish heads cost?]

  4. Sex camelos optimos tuos spuentes, tres palmas, et viculum Levantinum habere volo. [I want to have your six best spitting camels, three palms, and a Levantine hamlet.]

I thought them up myself. As I said, I had originally asked louie about the portuguese one, but he didnt respond, and so Edwino suggested I start a thread. Anyway, i chose such an odd collection of words to mix things up, and make it a little challenging for you guys. You all have made me proud, sniff.

Now, for my conlang, Montreiano:

*As with all conlangs, vocab liable to change. Montreiano is based off of Vulgar Latin, but developed similarly to Spanish and Portuguese (this isnt a jumble of words from different Romance Languages)

In Gelandile:

Wida añ ile gonetobeleño, mul, ta gen ritoselaghino liñgusima?

Wan digha bimìle, uliben Balile, ta sametoto wes wesedìsameto bos wesedìnuld lonìsed ghrabo talisin liñgu taliduñuhil?

(Literally: What would your child, Bali’s shore, and 1,11,17,40 (base 8) secluded crabs cost to buy?)

Yes, this is a conlang. Yes, they count in base 8. They also have no sexes, so “daughter” is right out. And “ghrab” and “mul” are taken from English as closely as possible in their language–since they’ve never seen either one.

I’m not even going to try to translate the other two

…Deee-licious? Deee-lovely? Deee-lectable? Deee-vine? How do you say…Deee-GORGEOUS!!!

Sorry, was listening to Deee-lite and had a too-perfect-to-pass-up moment.

in Russian again, this time in the Cyrillic alphabet (Windows-1251 codepage):

Ãäå ìîæíî êóïèòü òð¸õ ïðîñòèòóòîê, îäíîãî ìóëà, è øåñòü áàððåëåé íåôòè?/øåñòü áî÷îê ìàñëà?

Ñêîëüêî ñòîèò âàøà äî÷ü, ïîáåðåæüå îñòðîâà Áàëè, è òðèñòà òûñÿ÷ ðàêîâ-îòøåëüíèêîâ?

Êàêàÿ öåíà íà êóðèíûå ëàïêè, ïî ñðàâíåíèþ ñ ðûáûìè ãîëîâêàìè?

Ìíå, ïîæàëóéñòà, øåñòåðî âàøèõ ëó÷øèõ ïëåâàþøèõ âåðáëþä, òðè ôèíèêîâûå ïàëüìû, è îäíó ìàëåíêóþ ñðåäíåâîñòî÷íóþ äåðåâíþ.

Esperanto:

-Kie acheteblas tri prostituitinoj, mulo, kaj ses bariloj da petrolo? (I’m assuming fuel oil, not cooking oil.)

And as long as we’re doing conlangs, here’s from mine, Lyanjen:

-Daitaz iam rodz’put sri tarisactain, ékusan kabálus’ju’emiónus, ju sri torlorain nuit’ulas?

(“Where can I be sold three sex workers, a specimen of the Earth creature Equus caballus x hemionus, and three hundred lora of oil?”)

-Adupaz sta tejem secas, zicam Balís, ju sritordeza pagúrusaim?
(“How much is it for your daughter, the coast of Bali, and three hundred thousand Pagurus spp?”)

-Adupanaz perzi skajam gálusas, r’begendand tat pokaim takas?
(“How much does one pay for feet of Gallus spp., compared to that for fish heads?”)

-Ce kamélusain sacas zluña’suiard jpeard, sri féniksain daktiliféra, ju kiturban Norje’ajas.
(“Six of your best spitting Camellus spp., three Phoenix dactylifera, and a small village of the Middle East.”)

Doob, you caught me while one of those many random “dozing off” periods I have in chat. :stuck_out_tongue:

Okay, now for the sentences in Portuguese (and yes it’s similar to Spanish, but not exact) :

  • Where can I buy three prostitutes, a mule and six barrels of oil? *
**Onde posso eu comprar três prostitutes, uma mula e seis tambores do óleo? **

  • How much is your daughter, the shore of Bali, and three hundred thousand hermit crabs? *

  • What’s the price of chicken feet compared to fish heads? *

I’d like six of your finest spitting camels, three date palms, and a small middle eastern village

Note: the ‘c’ is pronounced like a ‘k’ sound while the ‘ç’ is pronounced like an ‘s’ sound.

Minor corrections (i should really not do two things when doing translations :))

Note: ç = ts, gg = /Z/ (as in azure), x = sh, ñ = ng, g before i = same as gg, ll = ly, ò = /O/ as in omni, è = /E/ as in “met”

I’m glad i’ve gotten a couple of the conlangers out on the board to do some contributions. Montreiano doesn’t have a home on the web yet. That will come when I have time.

Louie, I think you’ve made a mistake. AFAIK, shouldn’t every sentence in portuguese be regularly punctuated with ‘porra’?.
