How fast does nose hair grow?

Yes, I know, it’s a funny question. But I’m having an issue.

Due to chemo, I’ve lost ALL my hair. Yes, all. I haven’t had to shave my legs or under my arms in months. I still have eyebrows and eyelashes, but I think my eyebrows are thinning.

I’ve been fighting a cough for the past 6-8 weeks, and I went back to the doctor because the Zyrtec/neti pot weren’t working. She prescribed me a nasal decongestant, since my lungs were clear, but I’m congested. She thinks it might be a side effect of the Taxol, which can cause mucousitits, an irritation of the mucous membranes.

On another board, I put two and two together and figured out I might have lost those lovely efficient little nose hair filters. I’m done with chemo on Oct 20. How long after that I can expect my nose not to be an open gate?

Too damn fast in my experience. I hope hair rockets out of your nostrils soon as quickly as mine does!

I’ve seen numbers between 0.35 and 0.45 millimetres per day.

Let’s say it’s 0.4mm. That’s 1.2cm per month and 14.4cm per annum or, in old money, about five and a half inches a year. If you revisit this thread in two years time, and your nasal hairs have grown at a rate which is biologically par for the course, they should be gently brushing the spacebar on your keyboard.

Under no circumstances should you cut your nose hair before the two years is up. If you do, I won’t be able to tell whether or not you are normal.

Good luck.

How long is considered effective for nose filtering purposes? Fortunately, I have not had to trim my nose hair, but who the hell knows what the chemo is doing to my body…I might be able to knit them into a moustache for Halloween.

That’s a good question, which I’m not qualified to answer.

I occasionally use a trimmer on my nose hair to remove any stray protrusions from the nasal cavity. I’d be surprised if any existing hairs within the nostrils are greater than a half inch in length but, of course, they are not easy to measure accurately. I have no apparent problems with filtering.

Maybe your doctor could advise you on that score.

My sister, who is a nurse, recommended wearing a mask. I think Ivylad has some for his woodworking…I’ll try that this weekend and see if it helps.

Don’t worry, I will also discuss this with my doctor.
