Starting Tuesday, oil and gas companies can pick which parts of Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge they’re interested in drilling. It’s the latest push by the Trump administration to auction off development rights in the pristine landscape before President-elect Joe Biden takes office.
The official “call for nominations” launches a 30-day comment period. It will also allow the Bureau of Land Management to move forward with a lease sale, which it must announce 30 days in advance. The exact timing is not clear, but it raises the possibility that a lease sale might happen just days before Biden’s inauguration.

He doesn’t care one Iota about global warming or what more oil drilling does to the environment. 
His drive to open public lands to the worst kinds of extractive development really flummoxes me. I don’t think this is Teapot Dome, he’s not going to personally profit from those mines or wells. I’m not sure resource-extraction companies are clamoring for more mines or wells when supplies are glutted and demand is gutted. And pristine-ish nature is worth money from an outdoor recreation and tourism perspective, so it’s not like conservation is some hippy-dippy concept. Nobody would call Teddy Roosevelt that. 
It seems Trump thinks nature is a waste of resources and a landscape of wells and pumps and pipelines is an image of progress, like he just dropped out of time from the pre-TR Industrial or Gilded Age. It almost seems like he wants Mordor for Mordor’s sake.

Why off shore? Let’s start drilling in and on Mar-a-Lago. Maybe start with the putting green (there has to be one, right?).
Wouldn’t work. He sued in Scotland to stop an off-shore windfarm being built near his moribund golf course because it would spoil the view. The NIMBY is strong in this one and he’d move against it.

Its very simple. Liberals like the environment therefore conservatives must do everything in their power to destroy it. Its the same logic behind rolling coal, and opposition to energy efficient bulbs.
For all their many points of friction, McConnell and Trump have had one point of unity: a deep conviction of the non-legitimacy of government by the other party.

Yeah. What I hope is that the Biden transition team is meeting with former Obama administration members to create a jump-start plan for catching up on the needed information about the past four years without help from the unwilling and/or incompetent Trump appointees.
Which, given that Biden himself is a former Obama administration member, seems like it ought to be doable.

This pissed me off today.
Later, as Pence made his way to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware to witness the dignified transfer of American service members killed during a helicopter crash in Egypt, the President was in the West Wing grasping at developments in Nevada, claiming they would have a “major impact.”
The President has yet to comment on the deaths of the Americans, who were killed last Thursday while serving as part of a peacekeeping force in Egypt. He has not tweeted about the crash or made any other public comments about it.
