I think even in 2015-16 most of the Dope was strongly anti-Trump, although not necessarily pro-Hillary. But during and after the 2016 race there was a fairly well-represented minority of those a) taunting disappointed Democrats with Trump’s victory and/or b) pooh-poohing Democrats’ fears that he would really be “that bad”.
One thing all those threads illustrate is how deeply and repeatedly many conservative Dopers embarrassed themselves with their credulity about the good faith of the American conservative establishment. It’s become a sort of conventional wisdom of ressentiment on these boards that a lot of conservative Dopers were “driven away” in recent years by a heightened atmosphere of “intolerance” on the part of liberals, etc.
But the truth is that a lot of those conservative voices (the ones that didn’t bring an outright suspension or banning on themselves with board rules violations, at least) are still around, lurking and/or in full possession of posting privileges. They’re just not posting anymore because they know we can all see the stupid things they said, and don’t want to be reminded of what asses they were.
My grandmother voted for presidents in the US from 1928 to 2012. It may be a record. Today, if a person voted for President the first time on their 18th birthday, to equal my grandmother they’d have to vote when they became 102 years old. I never asked who she voted for, but I did see a McCain/Palin sticker on her wheelchair. And my mother, a lifelong Republican, voted for Hilary Clinton rather than vote for Trump.
Impressive, especially given that women didn’t even have the right to vote a couple of election cycles before the first time your grandmother exercised that right.
I think it was someone more obscure than Starving Artist. It was some kid from India who joined the board I think just to gush about Trump.
I also recall quite a few drive by posters who would jump in and tell us what a bunch of snowflake libs we were for not getting behind Trump and then leave.
There also was some regular troll that constantly droned on about “Trump Derangement Syndrome” doing the whole white man’s burden thing, patiently trying to educate us stupid and wayward lefties. Yeah, fuck that guy too.
Twenty states or territories granted women the right to vote between 1869 (when women could vote in the Territory of Wyoming) and ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920. In 1917, Jeannette Rankin became the first woman in Congress after Montana elected her to a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Rankin was the sole dissenting vote against declaring war on Japan (Public Law 77-328, 55 STAT 795) on December 8, 1941. Rebecca Latimer Felton was the first female U.S. Senator. She served for 1 day in November 1922. The governor of Georgia appointed her to the position hoping the stunt would earn him the women’s vote. Hattie Caraway was the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate in 1932. She served the state of Arkansas until 1945.
Edit: The link to the list of twenty is broken above. They are,
The following territories provided full voting rights to women before statehood:
1869 Territory of Wyoming
1870 Territory of Utah
1883 Territory of Washington
1887 Territory of Montana
1913 Territory of Alaska
The following states granted women the right to vote prior to the 19th Amendment:
1890 Wyoming
1893 Colorado
1896 Utah, Idaho
1910 Washington
1911 California
1912 Arizona, Kansas, Oregon
1914 Montana, Nevada
1917 New York
1918 Michigan, Oklahoma, South Dakota
In these states women could vote for President prior to the 19th Amendment:
1913 Illinois
1917 Nebraska, Ohio, Indiana, North Dakota, Rhode Island
1919 Iowa, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Tennessee, Wisconsin
The stupid was strong with that one. 100% emotion, zero critical thinking.
There was another mommy’s basement type who would drive-by every once in awhile to crow about the mad stacks of cash he was amassing thanks to Donny Dumbshit. Whoever he was, he probably spent today wrapped in tinfoil clutching an AR-15.
I’ve been wondering about that. Can the judges in his other cases demand a schedule of Trump’s appearances at trial or is he free to say “I reserve my right to appear on any given day” and force delays?
Or will the judges all put their heads together and schedule around one another?
Trump has more latitude on when he appears in the Letitia James civil case. He will have far less discretion to not appear in his criminal cases. He can be excused from some proceedings but will likely need the judge’s permission to waive his appearance.
That said, judges will schedule around mandatory appearances in other cases – unless they believe they’re being gamed over it.
That’s exactly what I think is happening. He already got stuff moved back because he was going to attend the trial this week, but he’s leaving today to go home and then to a campaign rally.
But heck, say he follows through and genuinely intends to be in the NY court every day until that trial is over, which could be months from now. Will the other judges just keep pushing stuff back or is Engoran more likely to create holes in his own schedule?
Just my opinion, but based on what I know about how judges tend to handle things:
I expect Judge Engoran is going to keep the parties’ feet to the fire and power through this trial. He was already pushing Trump’s lawyers today to move things along with their questioning of the current witness’s testimony.
I thought it was notable that Judge Engoran made a point of saying this trial will be over by December 22nd. E. Jean Carroll’s damages portion of her civil case is currently scheduled to start on January 15th. Jury selection is scheduled to start in Judge Chutkan’s criminal case on March 4th. A pretrial status conference hearing is set in Judge Cannon’s case on May 14th with an anticipated (but probably to-be-delayed) trial date of May 20th. There’s no current trial date set for Trump and his co-defendants who waived time in Judge McAfee’s case in Georgia.
I don’t believe anything else is scheduled before the anticipated end date of this trial other than possibly status conferences (from which Trump can probably be excused), so Judge Engoran shouldn’t need to create too many holes. Trump can safely attend without any need to disrupt this trial.
Okay, so it looks like the delay I was referring to is unrelated to these cases. His deposition in his own lawsuit against Michael Cohen was delayed to next week so that he could attend this week’s proceedings.
I feel like I need a law clerk of my own just to keep up with all of this, but in their absence I sure do appreciate the ongoing analysis by you and our other legal-minded dopers.
I get muddled over it all sometimes, too. It’s a lot to keep track of, for sure!
To illustrate, it occurred to me that in my recitation above about pending cases, I completely overlooked to include the current status of Alvin Bragg’s case. But since DA Bragg has publicly said he will defer to federal prosecutions, he’s for sure not going to get in the way.
I wasn’t aware of the lawsuit against Michael Cohen by Trump. My take on that is that it’s a “fuck you” to Cohen, because Trump knows Cohen will have spent time preparing for the deposition. Asshole.
As I understand it. The last date agreed upon by both parties was 3 October, then Trump sent a request to change the date (again), because he had to be in New York all week for his trial. The judge then changed changed the date and location to this coming Sunday in New York. Somehow, I suspect the judge will not grant another request to change the date.
I believe Trump had filed suit against Cohen as a nuisance. Trump’s deposition by Cohen (which by all accounts he is very well prepared for) has to potential to provide more evidence for Jack Smith’s cases and James’ case, so he has been avoiding it. Expect the suit to be dropped shortly.
