You are correct. I mis-mathed. In my defense, I had help.
No, really. The quote from needscoffee was from The New Republic article, which was quoting Trump at a rally. Further in the same article:
While Charleroi’s population had increased by 2,000 percent as a result of immigration, that number was relative, Manning explained, because the town’s population had been so small. Charleroi had a population of 4,324 in 2022, according to the most recent census estimates.
I read the article before I posted (good practice, in general). Joe Manning is the borough manager, whose quote supports my interpretation. In this case, it’s most likely poor reporting by The New Republic.
If that’s accurate, the population went from 216 to 4,324 in just a few years, with 4,108 of them being Haitian immigrants. Sounds wildly implausible to me, but if true I can see where the 200 or so original inhabitants might feel overwhelmed – regardless of the skin color, ethnicity or origin of the new arrivals.
It can’t be accurate. Where would they sleep? How could the local utilities possibly keep up?
From what I gather, it is a 2000% increase in Haitian immigrants, not in the overall population of the town, which is much more plausible. Going from 10 to 300 (or 20 to 600 or whatever) over a couple years is much more plausible than the population of the entire town growing from 150 to 4500.
Charleroi is about to lose its biggest employer, which is, of course, its priority right now. I don’t live there but I’m pissed that the Felonious Cheeto plans to show up to campaign and spew his ridiculous lies when a lot of people are about to lose their jobs.
Ain’t that the truth. Every rabbit I’ve ever dined with has conveniently forgotten their billfold when it came time to pay. I think rabbits invented the concept of dine-and-dash.
