That story has gotten even darker as it turns out Vance and Trump received definitive assurances on September 9 that the rumor was false, but Trump ran with it in the presidential debate of September 10 anyway.
As we well know by now, “utter shamelessness” is the most salient trait of Trump, Vance, and their entire New Republican party.
The problem is, they believe their own lies.
That, Sherrerd, and “imperviousness to the truth if it gets in the way of short-term political expediency.”
One thing I’ve observed from the very beginning of Trump, which continues to this day, is that people struggle to believe that anyone in a position of responsibility could possibly straight up lie so flagrantly.
Even when the facts are crystal clear, they want to minimize the behavior, rationalizing that there “must be a kernel of truth” for the assertion made.
I’ve seen this tendency even on this Board.
It scares me because it works so well for Trump. Even after ten years of flat-out lying, he gets the benefit of the doubt by many, allowing them to minimize the damage inflicted by the lies. Damage that is deep and will take decades to undo.

Trump admittedly has no shame. He doesn’t hold anyone else in enough esteem to care what they think.
For him to feel shame, he would have to think himself capable of wrongdoing. But if he wants to do it, it must be right, at least when he does it.
Also, shame requires empathy, which he has none.
He likely learned this early from his father, as a coping mechanism. If he doesn’t care what others think, they have no emotional power over him.
Now Trump keeps threatening – er, ah, vowing to go, oh, so bravely, to the hellhole that is Springfield, Ohio, despite the roving throngs of dark aliens, so he says.
Will he actually do that? Would he try to hold a rally there? I can see city officials asking him to stay away and Trump bulldozing over them to go anyway.
If he does go, will the mayor refuse to meet with him? Will any venue be willing to let him hold a rally there?
Maybe he’ll just do a photo op, strike a heroic pose in front of a police station or city hall, and blither something.
If horror movies have taught us anything, it’s that there’s always an idiot willing to do something stupid.

Bingo. While there are certainly true believers in the MAGA ranks, I think a lot of Trump supporters know he lies and they’re fine with it. JD Vance justified his lies openly and I think MAGA supporters have been doing that for a while.
